When the dānava Mahiṣāsura had been slain by the Goddess in battle, for the welfare of the gods, then formerly the gods went to happiness. Scorched by him, all the gods together with Vāsava, abandoning heaven, went to Brahmā's world and made (their plight) known; the earth trembled. Thus, having obtained his boon, the daitya, Mahiṣī's son Gajāsura, his mind well pleased, then went back to his own abode. When the lord of the asuras arrived, O sage, there was a great clamour there among the dwellers of Ānandana: "He is saved, saved!" The tawniness in whose two eyes, and again their flickering — even now it is not to be conveyed — "here he comes swiftly!" And that daitya Gajāsura, pierced through by that trident, thinking himself as it were made into a parasol, sang of Hara: "May the fragrance be ever agreeable, may it be ever most soft, may it be ever spotless, may it be ever most adorning." Then Hari, Brahmā and the other gods, their minds overflowing with joy, bowing with folded hands, praised that Maheśāna.
