vyāsa uvāca || tasminmahati saṃgrāme dāruṇe lomaharṣaṇe || śukro daityapatirvidvānbhakṣitastripurāriṇā

Vyāsa said: In that great battle, cruel and hair-raising, Śukra the learned lord of the demons was devoured by the foe of Tripura.

iti śrutaṃ samāsānme tatpunarbrūhi vistarāta|| kiṃ cakāra mahāyogī jaṭharasthaḥ pinākinaḥ pravartamāne samare śaṃkarāṃdhakayostayoḥ || anirbhedyapavivyūhagirivyūhādhināthayoḥ rakṣarakṣābhito vipra pravrajya śaraṇāgatān || asurāñchatrubhirvīrairarditāṃśca mṛtānapi dussahaṃ kaṇadhūmaṃ vai pītvā varṣasahasrakam || vidyeyamīśvarātprāptā baṃdhūnāṃ sukhadā sadā āścaryarūpe pramatheśvarāṇāṃ tasmiṃstathā vartati yuddhayajñe || amarṣito bhārgavakarma dṛṣṭvā śilādaputro'bhyagamanmaheśam daṃbholi śūlāsiparaśvadhānāmuddaṃḍacakropalakaṃpanānām || naṃdīśvarasyopari dānavendrā varṣaṃ vavarṣurjaladā ivogram

So I have heard in brief; tell me that again at length. What did the great yogin do, seated in the belly of the bearer of the Pināka, while that battle between the two, Śaṅkara and Andhaka, was going on — between the two commanders of impenetrable battle-arrays and mountain-arrays? "Protect, protect on every side" — O brahmin, going forth he protected the asuras who had come to him for refuge, tormented by heroic foes and even dead. Having drunk the unbearable smoke of particles for a thousand years, this knowledge was obtained from Īśvara, ever a giver of ease to his kinsmen. While that wondrous war-sacrifice of the lords of the Pramathas was proceeding thus, the son of Śilāda, unable to bear it, seeing Bhārgava's deed, went up to Maheśa. Upon Nandīśvara the lords of the dānavas rained down a fierce rain, like rain-clouds — of thunderbolts, tridents, swords, axes, discs with raised staves, stones and kaṃpanas.

na dadāha kathaṃ śabhośśukraṃ taṃ jaṭharānalaḥ || kalpāntadahanaḥ kālo dīptatejāśca bhārgavaḥ

How did the fire of Śambhu's belly not burn up that Śukra — that fire being the conflagration at the aeon's end, Time itself, while Bhārgava too is of blazing splendour?
