Then, having gone some distance, that son of Yajñadatta, the wicked Guṇanidhi, stopped, his zeal gone, cast out (by his family). ... (offerings) of many kinds, greatly splendid, surrounded by his own kinsfolk, (he came) to worship Īśāna, fasting on the night of Śiva. As he came up out of fear, just then, as he fled, he was struck down by the city guards and in an instant went blind. Better to look upon poison, or to drink it, or best of all to touch (it): Śiva's property is not to be made use of, not even when the breath is at the throat. Nothing further is to be said — you go back as you came, O messengers of Yama, to your own world, with a wholly gladdened mind. Thus did that Yama command his own servants; and they all, saying "so be it" in their minds, fell silent, smiling brightly. By this very course of dharma King Dama, lifelong, attained a great abundance of merit and (at last) came under the law of time.
