They turned back and went for refuge to Śaṅkara, the Lord of the universe, crying with faltering voice, "Save us, save us, Lord of all!" And a thousand headless trunks danced much in the battle; a great uproar arose, terrifying to the weak. That rain of arrows of his was terrifying and hard to ward off, and a great, dreadful darkness came to be at the place of slaughter. Serpents, mountains, trees and rocks as well — all these the son of Śiva cut down in anger with a divine missile. The lord of the Dānavas released divine weapons by the hundreds; those the mighty Vīrabhadra cut down, and (struck) him with arrows.
