That messenger, going there, beheld the moon-browed one, seated at the foot of a banyan tree, with the radiance of ten million suns. Then that messenger of Śaṅkhacūḍa, knower of the highest scriptures, bowing to Śaṅkara and folding his hands, spoke auspicious words: "Do not do injury to them; enjoy your own station respectfully. Do not, having considered it, make your rule excessive and disordered. Why the battle with the Tripuras and the reducing (of them) to ashes? You did it, O Giriśa — hence you are known as a partisan of the gods." Maheśa said: "We are wholly subject to (our) devotees, never independent at all; we act by their will, and are not partisan to anyone." Having said this, Maheśvara Śaṅkara fell silent there. Śaṅkhacūḍa's messenger rose and went into his presence.
