There was heard the wonderful, greatly divine, auspicious origin of the liṅga, on hearing whose power the destruction of suffering comes about here. Brahmā said: And in the upward flight of the swan its motion is steady; there is discrimination between the real and the unreal, as in the separating of water and milk. Then, having bowed to Śambhu and then having obtained Hari's knowledge, having reached supreme bliss, I set my mind on performing creation. "You have appeared today, O Hari, through Śiva's grace; the egg that has come about from Śaṅkara's manifestation—bring consciousness (into it)." Seeing him, and knowing (him) to be a helper for me who wished to create, a creation arose that was full of suffering, with a horizontal current, not effective. And even those wise ones commanded by me, being averse to worldly existence, their minds fixed solely on meditation on Śiva, did not set their thought upon creation. Again I spoke to the Lord, Mahārudra, Maheśvara: "Create offspring, O god, who are beset by the fear of birth and death."

brahmovāca || samyak pṛṣṭe ca bhavatā yajjātaṃ tadanaṃtaram || kathayiṣyāmi saṃkṣepādyathā pūrvaṃ śrutaṃ mayā

Brahmā said: What happened after that, which you have rightly asked about, I shall relate in brief, as I heard it formerly.

aṃtarhite tadā deve śivarūpe sanātane || ahaṃ viṣṇuśca viprendra adhikaṃ sukhamāptavān

When the god, eternal, in the form of Śiva, had then vanished, I and Viṣṇu, O best of brahmins, attained abundant happiness.

mayā ca viṣṇunā rūpaṃ haṃsavārāhayostadā || saṃvṛtaṃ tu tatastābhyāṃ lokasargāvanecchayā

And then by me and by Viṣṇu the forms of the swan and the boar were assumed—by those two, out of the wish to create and protect the world.

nārada uvāca || vidhe brahman mahāprājña saṃśayo hṛdi me mahān || kṛpāṃ kṛtvātulāṃ śīghraṃ taṃ nāśayitumarhasi

haṃsavārāhayo rūpaṃ yuvābhyāṃ ca dhṛtaṃ katham || anyadrūpaṃ vihāyaiva kimatra vada kāraṇam

How was the form of a swan and of a boar assumed by you two, leaving aside every other form? Tell the reason for this.

ajñānajñānayostattvaṃ vivecayati haṃsakaḥ|| haṃsarūpaṃ dhṛtaṃ tena brahmaṇā sṛṣṭikāriṇā

The swan discriminates the true nature of ignorance and knowledge; therefore the swan's form was assumed by that Brahmā, the maker of creation.

SiP 2 15.12

viveko naiva labdhaśca yato haṃso vyalīyata || śivasvarūpatattvasya jyotirūpasya nārada

And no discrimination at all was gained, wherefore the swan dissolved away. O Nārada, of the reality that is Śiva's own form, which is of the nature of light—

SiP 2 15.13

sṛṣṭipravṛttikāmasya kathaṃ jñānaṃ prajāyate || yato labdho viveko'pi na mayā haṃsarūpiṇā

—how should knowledge arise for one whose desire is engagement in creation, since not even discrimination was gained by me in the form of a swan?

gamane'dho varāhasya gatirbhavati niścalā || dhṛtaṃ vārāharūpaṃ hi viṣṇunā vanacāriṇā

In going downward, the boar's motion is steady; hence the boar's form was indeed assumed by Viṣṇu, who roams the wilds.
