sanatkumāra uvāca || atha śambhurmahādevo rathasthassarvasaṃyutaḥ || tripuraṃ sakalaṃ dagdhumudyato'bhūtsuradviṣām|| śīrṣaṃ sthānakamāsthāya saṃdhāya ca śarottamam || sajjaṃ tatkārmukaṃ kṛtvā pratyālīḍhaṃ mahādbhutam parabrahmaṇi deveśa sarvopāsye maheśvare || anyaprasādataḥ kāryaṃ siddhirghaṭati neti hi atha sajyaṃ dhanuḥ kṛtvā śarvassaṃdhāya taṃ śaram || pūjya pāśupatāstraṃ sa tripuraṃ samaciṃtayat tārakākṣastu nirdagdho bhrātṛbhyāṃ sahito'bhavat || sasmāra svaprabhuṃ devaṃ śaṃkaraṃ bhaktavatsalam aviruddhaṃ tu devānāṃ rakṣitaṃ śaṃbhutejasā || vipatkālepi sadbhaktaṃ maheśaśaraṇāgatam

Sanatkumāra said: Then Śambhu, the Great God, standing on his chariot with all (his equipment) assembled, made ready to burn the whole of Tripura, (the city) of the enemies of the gods. Taking his stance with head (erect), and fitting the finest arrow, he made that bow ready and drew it back — a great marvel. "O Lord of gods, since the highest Brahman, the Great Lord, is the one all men should worship, can a task be accomplished, can success come about, by the favour of another? Surely not." Then, having strung the bow, Śarva fitted that arrow, and, worshipping (Gaṇeśa), he directed the Pāśupata weapon in thought against Tripura. But Tārakākṣa, who was (about to be) burnt up together with his two brothers, remembered his own lord, the god Śaṃkara, who is fond of his devotees — (one) not hostile to the gods, guarded by Śambhu's power, a true devotee even in time of calamity, who had gone for refuge to Maheśa.
