"O gods, I know the great distress of the gods entirely; those demons are strong and cannot be slain by gods or demons." Going there and seeing Hari, they bowed down, seized with agitation; and the gods, with hands joined in cupped salutation, praised him with great devotion. "What is to be done by me in the tasks of the gods, I who am the helper of the gods? But those demons, the sons of Tāraka, are devotees of Śiva" — thus (he spoke) — (seeing them) equipped with many weapons and wearing many guises, then like Kālāgnirudra, like the sun of doomsday. "There is no destruction by magic rites for the most righteous, no doubt of it" — so said the Lord himself, who establishes the authority of scripture and of practice. Then at once Viṣṇu, the giver of aid to the gods, spoke to the gods, by Śiva's command, having been commanded by Śiva himself concerning the protection of the three worlds.
