Homage to Śrī Gaṇeśa. Homage to Śrī Gaurī and Śaṃkara. Nārada said: We have heard the excellent, joy-giving story — the good account of Śambhu as a householder, and of Gaṇa (Gaṇeśa), Skanda and the rest.

Now tell, with great kindness, the choicest and best story: how Śaṃkara, Rudra, while sporting, slew the wicked. But those three, having gone to the cave of Meru, performed most wondrous austerity, abandoning all the delightful, most charming enjoyments; and for a hundred years, setting down one foot (only) and standing on the ground, those exceedingly mighty ones practised supreme austerity there. The daityas said: If you are pleased, O lord of gods, if a boon is to be given by you, (then grant us) invulnerability among all embodied beings, for all of us. Having pondered that yourself with your own intelligence, (ask for) what is not possible for gods and asuras, hard to obtain or very hard to accomplish — cheat death, O sinless ones! And so at the end of a thousand years we shall come together with one another; these cities will become one, and not otherwise. Thus having obtained three sons, the sons of Tāraka entered (them); of great strength and prowess, they enjoyed all pleasures. Everywhere the excellent place was purified by the wives devoted to their husbands, whose nature it was to serve their husbands, turned away from evil practice.
