Śiva's Gaṇas said: Who are you? From where have you come? And what do you intend to do? Go far from here this day, if you wish to live. — Then all those Gaṇas of Śiva who were there, having heard (his) words, went to Śiva there and reported that occurrence. Śivā's son said: Go, go far off from there; if not, I shall indeed show you my own most fierce valour, and you will be made utterly ridiculous. — Meanwhile the Goddess, hearing again the quarrel of them and of him at the door, said to her companion, "Look!" Brahmā said: Ah, the virtuous lady stood there a moment, under the sway of Śiva's will. — (Gaṇeśa said:) You are doorkeepers, and yet why is there no opening of the door? You stand there and I stand here — that is settled. And you are Gaṇas, in the world most skilled in battle; how then will you go off lightly, abandoning a fight with me?

tasmācchivagaṇāssarve vacanaṃ śṛṇutādarāt || haṭhādvā vinayādvā na gaṃtavyaṃ mandire punaḥ

|| brahmovāca || ityuktāste gaṇenaiva sarve te lajjitā gaṇāḥ|| yayuśśivāṃtikaṃ taṃ vai namaskṛtya puraḥ sthitāḥ

Brahmā said: Thus addressed by that gaṇa, all those gaṇas were ashamed; they went into Śiva's presence and, having bowed, stood before him.

sthitvā nyavedayansarve vṛttāṃtaṃ ca tadadbhutam || karau baddhvā nataskaṃdhāśśivaṃ stutvā puraḥ sthitāḥ

Standing there, they all reported that astonishing occurrence; with hands folded and shoulders bowed, having praised Śiva, they stood before him.

tatsarvaṃ tu tadā śrutvā vṛttaṃ tatsvagaṇoditam|| laukikīṃ vṛttimāśritya śaṃkaro vākyamabravīt

Then, having heard all that occurrence as told by his own gaṇas, Śaṅkara, adopting worldly behaviour, spoke these words.

शंकर उवाच ।। श्रूयतां च गणास्सर्वे युद्धं योग्यं भवेन्नहि ।। यूयं चात्रास्मदीया वै स च गौरीगणस्तथा

śaṃkara uvāca || śrūyatāṃ ca gaṇāssarve yuddhaṃ yogyaṃ bhavennahi || yūyaṃ cātrāsmadīyā vai sa ca gaurīgaṇastathā

Śaṅkara said: Hear, all you gaṇas — fighting would not be fitting; for you here are mine, and he likewise is Gaurī's gaṇa.

vinayaḥ kriyate cedvai vaśyaśśaṃbhuḥ striyā sadā || iti khyātirbhavelloke garhitā me gaṇā dhuvam

If courtesy is employed, then the report will arise in the world, "Śambhu is always subject to a woman" — and that, gaṇas, would surely be a reproach to me.

कृते चैवात्र कर्तव्यमिति नीतिर्गरीयसी ।। एकाकी स गणो बालः किं करिष्यति विक्रमम्

kṛte caivātra kartavyamiti nītirgarīyasī || ekākī sa gaṇo bālaḥ kiṃ kariṣyati vikramam

"Once a thing is begun, what must be done should be done here" — that maxim is the weightier one. That gaṇa is a boy and alone; what prowess will he accomplish?

striyā grahaḥ kathaṃ kāryo patyuragre viśeṣataḥ || kṛtvā sā girijā tasya nūnaṃ phalamavāpsyati

How is a blockade to be made by a woman, especially in her husband's presence? Having done it, that daughter of the mountain will surely receive the fruit of it.

tasmātsarve ca madvīrāḥ śṛṇutādarato vacaḥ || karttavyaṃ sarvathā yuddhaṃ bhāvi yattadbhavatviti
