Rising in the brahma-muhūrta, one should call to mind Śiva together with Ambā, and with joined palms and bowed head make his petition to him with devotion. Likewise on a Sunday, at a śrāddha, at a solstitial passage, at an eclipse, at a great gift-giving, at a sacred ford, and on a fast day — and again, whatever is fitting, a deerskin or the like, should be taken; seating himself upon it, the wise man should make the triple mark with ash. Then, having begged the pardon of that god, together with his brother, he should worship him with the highest devotion and bow again and again. Having made (for himself) the presence of Śiva, he should arrange his own seat; then, sitting facing north, he should again perform the sipping of water. (Śiva) whose limbs are encircled by Vāsuki and the other (serpents), furnished with the Pināka and other weapons, before whom the eight powers dance here unceasingly. Afterwards he should offer water for sipping, then present a garment. Sesame, and javā, or wheat, mung beans and black beans. Then he should have the sipping of water done with affection, or after a delay. Then, having prepared betel for Śiva with its limbs and sub-limbs (accompaniments): "For those who have committed offences against you, you alone are the refuge, O Lord" — having made much petition beginning thus, properly according to rule.
