Then the greatly fiery, greatly strong Kārtikeya roared; angered, he stood armed and ready, surrounded by a great army. On the head, on the neck, and on the thighs, the knees, the slope of the hips, on the breast, on the chest and on the back, they cut each other. Thus those two, Kumāra and Tāraka as well, both furious and skilled in fighting with the spear, fought one another. Then Kumāra, rich in the fiery power of Śaṃkara, struck with that spear the asura Tāraka, who had caused affliction to the worlds. When that evil-natured one was slain, all became free of thorns; then those gods, Śakra and the rest, all attained happiness. With the sound of song and instruments and with abundant Vedic chanting there was then a great festival, and especially the singing of praises.
