brahmovāca || devadeva guha svāmiñśāṃkare pārvatīsuta || na śobhate raṇo viṣṇu tārakāsurayorvṛthā
Brahmā said: God of gods, Guha, lord, son of Śaṃkara, child of Pārvatī — this battle of Viṣṇu and the demon Tāraka is fruitless and brings no glory.

viṣṇunā na hi vadhyo'sau tārako balavānati || mayā dattavarastasmātsatyaṃ satyaṃ vadāmyaham ||brahmovāca|| iti śrutvā mama vacaḥ kumāraḥ śaṃkarātmajaḥ || vijahāsa prasannātmā tathāstviti vaco'bravīt mohinīrūpato'nena paṃktibhedaḥ kṛto hi vai || devāsurasudhāpāne vedamārgo vigarhitaḥ kṛtvā bahūni pāpāni hariśśakraḥ punaḥpunaḥ || tejobhirvihatāveva naṣṭavīryau viśeṣataḥ hāhākāro mahānāsītpatite ca puraṃdare || senāyāṃ nirjarāṇāṃ hi taddṛṣṭvā kleśa āviśat vīrabhadro'pi patito bhūtale mūrchitaḥ kṣaṇam || tacchaktyā parayā krodhānnihato vakṣasi dhuvam
For that Tāraka, exceedingly strong, cannot be slain by Viṣṇu; a boon was granted him by me — therefore I speak the truth, the truth. Brahmā said: Hearing this speech of mine, the boy, Śaṃkara's son, laughed aloud, and with a gladdened heart said the words "So be it." For by this one (Viṣṇu), in the form of Mohinī, a breaking of the row was made at the gods' and demons' drinking of the nectar, and the way of the Veda was reviled. Having committed many sins again and again, Hari and Śakra were struck down by (Tāraka's) energies and, in particular, lost their valour. There was a great cry of "Alas!" when Puraṃdara fell; and in the army of the immortals, seeing that, distress entered. Vīrabhadra too, struck in the chest in anger by that supreme spear, fell senseless upon the ground for a moment.
