Brahmā said: When that son of Śambhu had been taken by the Kṛttikās, O sage, some time passed, and the daughter of the Snowy Mountain did not know of it. ... Fear did not fall (upon him) quickly, and if he does not deserve punishment (?) — a king who, though able, does not chastise, is an oppressor of his subjects and a devourer (of them). Brahmā said: Hearing the Lord's word, they trembled in the assembly, and looking at one another they spoke in turn before the Lord. Sandhyā said: Now, since the Kṛttikās had nourished him as their little son, they lovingly and out of delight gave him the name "Kārttika." All those messengers of Śiva, with various weapons and missiles in their hands, arrogantly surrounded the dwelling of the Kṛttikās. Formerly there took place the secret love-play of Pārvatī and Śiva; and Śambhu being seen by the gods, his seed fell upon the ground. Brother, those men who do not know you are of ruined intelligence; they pay no regard (to you), just as frogs living in the same water pay no regard to the lotuses.
