Brahmā said: Once, my son, having summoned the sages from all sides and the gods, I, the lotus-born, spoke a good word with affection. Hearing this speech, the Lord who is fond of his devotees, out of affection for me together with the gods, graciously spoke a word: "That is a killing, that a great flaw, that a blindness and that a stupor, when for a moment or even an instant one does not worship Śiva. That very thing I shall tell today; let it be heard, O best of sages: Indra (made a liṅga) of ruby, and the son of Viśravas of gold." Having come there, O sage, I duly declared to all the sages and to the gods the rule of Śiva's worship, which grants all that is desired. The liṅga is the maker of supreme bliss, utterly pure, Śiva, imperishable, partless, all-pervading, to be known, abiding in the heart of yogins. Whatever is seen or heard in the world, of the nature of being and non-being — know, O gods, that all that is the supreme Brahman whose nature is Śiva. So long as sin is in the body, no attainment arises; and when his sin is gone, everything becomes fruitful. Here the holy places praise such a one, best knower of knowledge; and the gods and all the sages (praise) Śiva, who is the supreme Brahman.

ādhyātmikaṃ yalliṃgaṃ pratyakṣaṃ yasya no bhavet || sa talliṃge tathā sthūle kalpayecca na cānyathā

He for whom the inner liṅga does not become directly present should imagine that liṅga in the gross (one), and not otherwise.

jñānināṃ sūkṣmamamalaṃ bhāvātpratyakṣamavyayam || yathā sthūlamayuktānāmutkṛṣṭādau prakalpitam

For the knowers (the liṅga) is subtle, spotless, immediate through (inner) contemplation, imperishable; whereas for the unqualified it is imagined as gross, in the form of an exalted (image) and the like.

aho vicārato nāsti hyanyattatvārthavādinaḥ || niṣkalaṃ sakalaṃ citte sarvaṃ śivamayaṃ jagat

Indeed, upon reflection there is nothing else for one who speaks of the true meaning of reality: in the mind the partless and the parted, the whole world, is made of Śiva.

evaṃ jñānavimuktānāṃ nāsti doṣa vikalpanā || vidhiścaiva tathā nāsti vihitāvihite tathā

Thus for those liberated by knowledge there is no imputation of fault, nor likewise any injunction, nor any (distinction) of the enjoined and the not-enjoined.

yathā jaleṣu kamalaṃ salilairnāvalipyate || tathā jñānī gṛhe tiṣṭhankarmaṇā nāvabadhyate

As a lotus in the waters is not smeared by the waters, so the knower, dwelling in a house, is not bound by action.

iti jñānaṃ samutpannaṃ yāvannaiva narasya vai || tāvacca karmaṇā devaṃ śivamārādhayennaraḥ

So long as such knowledge has not arisen for a man, so long should a man worship the god Śiva by ritual action.

And for the sake of confidence (in this), the sun, though standing in one place for (all) the worlds, though one, is seen manifoldly in water-vessels and other such objects.

bhedo jalānāṃ loke'sminpratibhāve vicārataḥ || evamāhustathā cānye sarve vedārthatattvagāḥ

In this world, upon reflection, the difference in the reflected images belongs to the waters; thus they say, and so too do all others who have grasped the true meaning of the Vedas.

hṛdi saṃsāriṇaḥ sākṣātsakalaḥ parameśvaraḥ || iti vijñānayuktasya kiṃ tasya pratimādibhiḥ

The Supreme Lord with parts is directly present in the heart of the transmigrating being: for one endowed with such discernment, what use are images and the like to him?

...but for one lacking such discernment the fashioning of an image is auspicious; for a man, a support is held to be (needed) in order to climb up to a high station.

ālambanaṃ vinā tasya padamuccaiḥ suduṣkaram || nirguṇaprāptaye nṝṇāṃ pratimālambanaṃ smṛtam

Without a support, a high station is very hard for him (to reach); the image is held to be men's support for attaining the qualityless.

saguṇānirguṇā prāptirbhavatī suniścitam || evaṃ ca sarvadevānāṃ pratimā pratyayāvahā

It is quite certain that the attainment of the qualityless comes through the qualified; and thus the image of all the gods brings about confidence.

devaścāyaṃ mahīyānvai tasyārthe pūjanaṃ tvidam || gaṃdhacandanapuṣpādi kimarthaṃ pratimāṃ vinā

And this god is indeed the greatest; this worship is for his sake — for what purpose would scent, sandal, flowers and the rest be, without an image?

tāvacca pratimā pūjya yāvadvijñānasaṃbhavaḥ || jñānābhāvena pūjyeta patanaṃ tasya niścitam

And the image is to be worshipped only so long as discernment has not arisen; if one were to (cease) worship in the absence of knowledge, his fall is certain.

evasmātkāraṇādviprāḥ śrūyatāṃ paramārthataḥ|| svajātyuktaṃ tu yatkarma kartavyaṃ tatprayatnataḥ

For this reason, brahmins, let (the matter) be heard as it truly is: whatever action is prescribed for one's own class, that is to be done with effort.

yatra yatra yathā bhaktiḥ kartavyaṃ pūjanādikam || vinā pūjanadānādi pātakaṃ na ca dūrataḥ

Wherever and in whatever manner there is devotion, there worship and the rest should be performed; without worship, giving and the like, sin is not far off.

tathā ca maline vastre raṃgaḥ śubhataro na hi || kṣālane hi kṛte śuddhe sarvo raṃgaḥ prasajjate

And so too, on a soiled cloth the dye is not the finer; but when washing has been done and it is clean, every dye takes hold.

tathā ca nirmale dehe devānāṃ samyagarcayā || jñānaraṃgaḥ prajāyeta tadā vijñānasaṃbhavaḥ

And so too, when the body is clean through the proper worship of the gods, the dye of knowledge arises; then discernment comes about.

SiP 2 12.73

vijñānasya ca sanmūlaṃ bhaktiravyabhicāriṇī || jñānasyāpi ca sanmūlaṃ bhaktirevā'bhidhīyate

And the true root of discernment is unwavering devotion; the true root of knowledge too is declared to be devotion alone.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition

SiP 2 12.74

bhaktermūlaṃ tu satkarma sveṣṭadevādipūjanam || tanmūlaṃ sadguruḥ proktastanmūlaṃ saṃgatiḥ satām ' saṃgatyā gururāpyeta gurormaṃtrādi pūjanam || pūjanājjāyate bhaktirbhaktyā jñānaṃ prajāyate

But the root of devotion is good action, the worship of one's chosen deity and the rest; the root of that is said to be a true teacher, and the root of that, the company of the good. Through such company a teacher is obtained; from the teacher, mantras and worship; from worship devotion is born; through devotion knowledge arises.

vijñānaṃ jāyate jñānātparabrahmaprakāśakam || vijñānaṃ ca yadā jātaṃ tadā bhedo nivartate

From knowledge is born discernment, which illumines the supreme brahman; and when discernment has arisen, then difference ceases.

bhede nivṛtte sakale dvaṃdvaduḥkhavihīnatā || dvaṃdvaduḥkhavihīnastu śivarūpo bhavatyasau

When the (sense of) difference has wholly ceased, there is freedom from the pain of the pairs of opposites; and one who is free from the pain of the pairs becomes of the very form of Śiva.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition

SiP 2 12.78

dvaṃdvāprāptau na jāyetāṃ sukhaduḥkhe vijānataḥ || vihitāvihite tasya na syātāṃ ca surarṣayaḥ

Since the pairs of opposites do not present themselves, pleasure and pain do not arise for one who knows; and for him, O gods and sages, there would be no prescribed and forbidden (acts).

īdṛśo viralo loke gṛhāśramavivarjitaḥ || yadi loke bhavatyasmindarśanātpāpahārakaḥ

Such a one, who has abandoned the household stage, is rare in the world; if he exists in this world, he removes sin by (mere) sight (of him).

Not such are the sacred fords, nor the gods made of clay and stone: they purify only after a long time, whereas the man of (Śiva-)knowledge does so even by being seen.

yāvadgṛhāśrame tiṣṭhettāvadākārapūjanam || kuryācchreṣṭhasya saprītyā sureṣu khalu paṃcasu

As long as one remains in the household stage, so long should one perform the worship of the image, with love, of the best (of gods) among the five deities.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition

athavā ca śivaḥ pūjyo mūlamekaṃ viśiṣyate || mūle sikte tathā śākhāstṛptāssatyakhilāssurāḥ

Or else Śiva is to be worshipped, (for) the single root is preferable: when the root is watered, so all the branches — that is, all the gods — are satisfied.

śākhāsu ca sutṛptāsu mūlaṃ tṛptaṃ na karhicit || evaṃ sarveṣu tṛpteṣu sureṣu munisattamāḥ

But when the branches are well satisfied, the root is never satisfied; so too, O best of sages, when all the gods are satisfied,

sarvathā śivatṛptirno vijñeyā sūkṣmabuddhibhiḥ || śive ca pūjite devāḥ pūjitāssarva eva hi

in no way is the satisfaction of Śiva to be assumed by those of subtle understanding; whereas when Śiva is worshipped, all the gods are indeed worshipped.

tasmācca pūjayeddevaṃ śaṃkaraṃ lokaśaṃkaram || sarvakāmaphalāvāptyai sarvabhūtahite rataḥ

Therefore one should worship the god Śaṃkara, the benefactor of the world, in order to obtain the fruit of every desire, being devoted to the welfare of all beings.
