Therein the wonderful, most divine and auspicious origin of the liṅga has been heard; and hearing its power, destruction of sorrow comes about here. — Brahmā said: Listen, Nārada, I shall tell in brief the worship of the liṅga; even in a hundred years it could not be told in full, O sage. A twice-born should smear pure clay five times for purification; a kṣatriya four times, and a vaiśya three times. Having performed the rite as is fitting, he should then begin the procedure of worship; making the mind quite steady and entering the worship-chamber. Into each and all of those (vessels) he should pour very cool water; with the praṇava (Oṃ) he should put into them, the wise man, the substances after inspecting them. With the Vāmadeva mantra he should sit upon the seat; (he should effect) the presence with the Rudra-gāyatrī, and should ward off (obstacles) with the Aghora (mantra). And those mantras, my son, for the accomplishment of all desires and aims, I shall declare concisely — listen attentively. With the praṇava mantra itself he should worship upon the head of the liṅga, with incense, lamps, food-offerings, and fine betel-rolls; then, having made obeisance together with the host of attendants, and having attained matchless joy, he should do his business as he pleases.
