Samaveda — Uttararchika — Chapter 2213

SV 2 2213.1

तरणिरित्सिषासति वाजं पुरन्ध्या युजा । आ व इन्द्रं पुरुहूतं नमे गिरा नेमिं तष्टेव सुद्रुवं

taraṇiritsiṣāsati vājaṃ purandhyā yujā | ā va indraṃ puruhūtaṃ name girā nemiṃ taṣṭeva sudruvaṃ

Only the energetic one seeks to win the prize, with abundance of thought as his yoke-mate. For you I bend Indra, the much-invoked, hither with my song, as a carpenter (bends) a wheel-rim of good wood.

Compare with Ralph T.H. Griffith

With Plenty for his true ally the active man will gain the spoil. Your Indra, much-invoked, I bend with song, as bends a wright his wheel of solid wood.

SV 2 2213.2

न दुष्टुतिर्द्रविणोदेषु शस्यते न स्रेधन्तं रयिर्नशत् । सुशक्तिरिन्मघवं तुभ्यं मावते देष्णं यत्पार्ये दिवि

na duṣṭutirdraviṇodeṣu śasyate na sredhantaṃ rayirnaśat | suśaktirinmaghavaṃ tubhyaṃ māvate deṣṇaṃ yatpārye divi

Ill praise is not approved among the wealth-givers; riches do not reach the one who falters. Yours indeed, O bounteous one, is the good power — the gift for one like me on the decisive day.

Compare with Ralph T.H. Griffith

They who bestow great riches love not paltry praise: wealth comes not to the niggard churl. Light is the task to give, O Maghavan, to one like me on the decisive day.

— tr. Ralph T.H. Griffith (1893)
