Rigveda Samhita — Mandala 9 — Chapter 77

RV 9 77.1

eṣa pra kośe madhumām̐ acikradad indrasya vajro vapuṣo vapuṣṭaraḥ | abhīm ṛtasya sudughā ghṛtaścuto vāśrā arṣanti payaseva dhenavaḥ

This one, full of honey, has roared forth in the vat, Indra's bolt, more wondrous than the wondrous. Toward him flow the good-milking, ghee-dripping (cows) of ṛta, lowing, like milch cows with their milk.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition

Compare with Ralph T.H. Griffith

MORE beauteous than the beautiful, as Indra's bolt, this Soma, rich in sweets, hath clamoured in the vat. Dropping with oil, abundant, streams of sacrifice flow unto him like milch-kine, lowing, with their milk.

— tr. Ralph T.H. Griffith (1896)

RV 9 77.2

sa pūrvyaḥ pavate yaṁ divas pari śyeno mathāyad iṣitas tiro rajaḥ | sa madhva ā yuvate vevijāna it kṛśānor astur manasāha bibhyuṣā

He, the ancient one, purifies himself, whom the falcon, sent forth, stole from heaven, across the airy space. He draws to himself (a draught) of the honey, quivering indeed, with a mind afraid of Kṛśānu the archer.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition

Compare with Ralph T.H. Griffith

On flows that Ancient One whom, hitherward, from heaven, sped through the region of the air, the Falcon snatched. He, quivering with alarm and terrified in heart before bow-armed Kr̥iṣânu, holdeth fast the sweet.

— tr. Ralph T.H. Griffith (1896)

RV 9 77.3

te naḥ pūrvāsa uparāsa indavo mahe vājāya dhanvantu gomate | īkṣeṇyāso ahyo3 na cāravo brahma-brahma ye jujuṣur havir-haviḥ

Let those drops of ours, the earlier and the later ones, run for great booty rich in cattle — (drops) worth looking at, lovely like serpents, which have delighted in prayer after prayer, oblation after oblation.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition — the model flagged this verse as uncertain

Compare with Ralph T.H. Griffith

May those first freshest drops of Soma juice effused flow on, their way to bring us mighty strength in kine. Beauteous as serpents, worthy to be looked upon, they whom each sacred gift and all our prayers have pleased.

— tr. Ralph T.H. Griffith (1896)

RV 9 77.4

ayaṁ no vidvān vanavad vanuṣyata induḥ satrācā manasā puruṣṭutaḥ | inasya yaḥ sadane garbham ādadhe gavām urubjam abhy arṣati vrajam

May this knowing drop of ours, praised by many, with whole-hearted mind overcome those who assail (us) — he who has laid the germ in the seat of the mighty one, and flows toward the pen of the cows, pried open.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition — the model flagged this verse as uncertain

Compare with Ralph T.H. Griffith

May that much-lauded Indu, with a heart inclined to us, well-knowing, fight against our enemies. He who hath brought the germ beside the Strong One's seat moves onward to the widely-opcned stall of kine.

— tr. Ralph T.H. Griffith (1896)

RV 9 77.5

cakrir divaḥ pavate kṛtvyo raso mahām̐ adabdho varuṇo hurug yate | asāvi mitro vṛjaneṣu yajñiyo 'tyo na yūthe vṛṣayuḥ kanikradat

The active, effective sap of heaven purifies itself, the great, undeceived Varuṇa, crooked to him who goes crookedly. Mitra, worthy of sacrifice, has been pressed among the communities; like a steed in the herd, lusting, roaring again and again.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition — the model flagged this verse as uncertain

Compare with Ralph T.H. Griffith

The active potent juice of heaven is flowing on, great Varuṇa whom the forward man can ne'er deceive. Mitra, the Holy, hath been pressed for troubled times, neighing like an impatient horse amid the herd,

— tr. Ralph T.H. Griffith (1896)
