Rigveda Samhita — Mandala 2 — Chapter 43

RV 2 43.1

प्रदक्षिणिद् अभि गृणन्ति कारवो वयो वदन्त ऋतुथा शकुन्तयः । उभे वाचौ वदति सामगा इव गायत्रꣳ च त्रैष्टुभꣳ चानु राजति

pradakṣiṇid abhi gṛṇanti kāravo vayo vadanta ṛtuthā śakuntayaḥ | ubhe vācau vadati sāmagā iva gāyatraṁ ca traiṣṭubhaṁ cānu rājati

Moving to the right, the poets sing out (their praise); the birds cry, the winged ones, each in its season. It utters both utterances, like a singer of sāmans, and it rules over the gāyatra and the traiṣṭubha (measures).

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition — the model flagged this verse as uncertain

Compare with Ralph T.H. Griffith

HERE on the right sing forth chanters of hymns of praise, even the winged birds that in due season speak. He, like: a Sâma-chanter utters both the notes, skilled in the mode of Trishṭup and of Gâyatrî.

— tr. Ralph T.H. Griffith (1896)

RV 2 43.2

udgāteva śakune sāma gāyasi brahmaputra iva savaneṣu śaṁsasi | vṛṣeva vājī śiśumatīr apītyā sarvato naḥ śakune bhadram ā vada viśvato naḥ śakune puṇyam ā vada

Like an udgātṛ, O bird, you sing the sāman; like a brahman's son at the pressings you recite. Like a prize-winning bull approaching the mares with foals — proclaim good fortune to us from every side, O bird; proclaim what is auspicious to us from all sides, O bird.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition — the model flagged this verse as uncertain

Compare with Ralph T.H. Griffith

Thou like the chanter-priest chantest the Sâma, Bird; thou singest at libations like a Brahman's son. Even as a vigorous horse when he comes near the mare, announce to us good forturue, Bird, on every side, proclaim in all directions happy luck, O Bird.

— tr. Ralph T.H. Griffith (1896)

RV 2 43.3

āvadam̐s tvaṁ śakune bhadram ā vada tūṣṇīm āsīnaḥ sumatiṁ cikiddhi naḥ | yad utpatan vadasi karkarir yathā bṛhad vadema vidathe suvīrāḥ

When you speak, O bird, proclaim good fortune; when you sit silent, make known to us your favour. When you cry as you fly up, like a karkari (lute) — may we speak loftily at the ritual assembly, with good men.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition

Compare with Ralph T.H. Griffith

When singing here, O Bird. announce good luck to us, and when thou sittest still think on us with kind thoughts. When flying off thou singest thou art like a lute. With brave sons in assembly may we speak aloud.

— tr. Ralph T.H. Griffith (1896)
