Rigveda Samhita — Mandala 1 — Chapter 136

RV 1 136.1

pra su jyeṣṭhaṁ nicirābhyām bṛhan namo havyam matim bharatā mṛḻayadbhyāṁ svādiṣṭham mṛḻayadbhyām | tā samrājā ghṛtāsutī yajñe-yajña upastutā | athainoḥ kṣatraṁ na kutaś canādhṛṣe devatvaṁ nū cid ādhṛṣe

Bring forth, indeed, the foremost lofty homage, the oblation, the thought, to the two watchful ones, the sweetest (thought) to the two gracious ones. Those two universal kings, with ghee for their draught, are praised at sacrifice after sacrifice; and so their sovereignty is not to be assailed from anywhere, their godhead never to be assailed.

Compare with Ralph T.H. Griffith

BRING adoration ample and most excellent, hymn, offierings, to the watchful Twain, the bountiful, your sweetest to the bounteous Ones. Sovrans adored with streams of oil and praised at every sacrifice. Their high imperial might may nowhere be assailed, ne'er may their Godhead be assailed.

— tr. Ralph T.H. Griffith (1896)

RV 1 136.2

adarśi gātur urave varīyasī panthā ṛtasya sam ayaṁsta raśmibhiś cakṣur bhagasya raśmibhiḥ | dyukṣam mitrasya sādanam aryamṇo varuṇasya ca | athā dadhāte bṛhad ukthya1ṁ vaya upastutyam bṛhad vayaḥ

A wider way has come into sight for the broad one; the path of ṛta has been held together by the rays, the eye of Bhaga by the rays. Heaven-dwelling is the seat of Mitra, of Aryaman, and of Varuṇa; and they two hold a great vigour worthy of the recitation, a great vigour to be praised.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition — the model flagged this verse as uncertain

Compare with Ralph T.H. Griffith

For the broad Sun was seen a path more widely laid, the path of holy law hath been maintained with rays, the eye with Bhaga's rays of light. Firm-set in heaven is Mitra's home, and Aryaman's and Varuṇa's. Thence they give forth great vital strength which merits praise, high power of life that men shall praise.

— tr. Ralph T.H. Griffith (1896)

RV 1 136.3

jyotiṣmatīm aditiṁ dhārayatkṣitiṁ svarvatīm ā sacete dive-dive jāgṛvāṁsā dive-dive | jyotiṣmat kṣatram āśāte ādityā dānunas patī | mitras tayor varuṇo yātayajjano 'ryamā yātayajjanaḥ

Light-bearing Aditi, upholder of the dwelling-place, rich in sunlight — the two attend her day by day, wakeful day by day. They have obtained a light-bearing dominion, the two Ādityas, lords of the gift: Mitra of these two, and Varuṇa who marshals the people, Aryaman who marshals the people.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition — the model flagged this verse as uncertain

Compare with Ralph T.H. Griffith

With Aditi the luminous, the celestial, upholder of the people, come ye day by day, ye who watch sleepless, day by day. Resplendent might have ye obtained, Âdityas, Lords of liberal gifts. Movers of men, mild both, are Mitra, Varuṇa, mover of men is Aryaman.

— tr. Ralph T.H. Griffith (1896)

RV 1 136.4

ayam mitrāya varuṇāya śaṁtamaḥ somo bhūtv avapāneṣv ābhago devo deveṣv ābhagaḥ | taṁ devāso juṣerata viśve adya sajoṣasaḥ | tathā rājānā karatho yad īmaha ṛtāvānā yad īmahe

May this soma be most beneficent for Mitra, for Varuṇa, a sharer at the drinking-feasts, a god sharing among the gods. May all the gods take pleasure in it today, of one accord. So do, O you two kings, as we ask, O you two possessors of ṛta, as we ask.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition

Compare with Ralph T.H. Griffith

This Soma be most sweet to Mitra, Varuṇa: he in the drinking-feasts, shall have a share thereof, sharing, a God, among the Gods. May all the Gods of one accord accept it joyfully to-day. Therefore do ye, O Kings, accomplish what we ask, ye Righteous Ones, whate'er we ask.

— tr. Ralph T.H. Griffith (1896)

RV 1 136.5

The man who has ministered to Mitra and to Varuṇa — him, unassailed, they guard all round from distress, the giving mortal from distress. Aryaman guards him who goes straight after (their) ordinance; (him) who with utterances tends the ordinance of these two, who with praises attends upon the ordinance.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition

Compare with Ralph T.H. Griffith

Whoso, with worship serves Mitra and VaruiIa, him guard ye carefully, uninjured, from distress, guard from distress the liberal man. Aryaman guards him well who acts uprightly following his law, Who beautifies their service with his lauds, who makes it beautiful with songs of praise.

— tr. Ralph T.H. Griffith (1896)

RV 1 136.6

Homage to Heaven, to the lofty one, to the two worlds; to Mitra have I spoken, to Varuṇa the bounteous, to the very gracious bounteous one. Praise Indra, Agni, heaven-dwelling Aryaman, Bhaga. Living long, may we be joined with offspring, may we be joined with the help of soma.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition

Compare with Ralph T.H. Griffith

Worship will I proress to lofty Dyaus, to Heaven and Earth, to Mitra and to bounteous Varuṇa, the Bounteous, the Compassionate. Praise Indra, praise thou Agni, praise Bhaga and heavenly Aryaman. Long may we live and have attendant progeny, have progeny with Soma's help.

— tr. Ralph T.H. Griffith (1896)

RV 1 136.7

ūtī devānāṁ vayam indravanto maṁsīmahi svayaśaso marudbhiḥ | agnir mitro varuṇaḥ śarma yaṁsan tad aśyāma maghavāno vayaṁ ca

With the help of the gods may we, having Indra with us, be held in esteem, self-glorious with the Maruts. May Agni, Mitra, Varuṇa extend shelter: may we and our patrons attain that.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition

Compare with Ralph T.H. Griffith

With the Gods' help, with Indra still beside us, may we be held self-splendid with the Maruts. May Agni, Mitra, Varuṇa give us shelter this may we gain, we and our wealthy princes.

— tr. Ralph T.H. Griffith (1896)
