PdP 6 74.1

mahādeva uvāca- śṛṇu devi pravakṣyāmi dharmamāhātmyamuttamam | yacchrutvā na punarjanma jāyate bhuvi karhicit

Mahādeva said: Listen, O Goddess, I shall proclaim the excellent greatness of dharma, hearing which one is never born again on earth.

dharmādarthaṃ ca kāmaṃ ca mokṣaṃ caitattrayaṃ labhet | tasmāddharmaṃ samīheta vidvānyaḥ sa budhaḥ smṛtaḥ

From dharma one obtains these three: wealth, pleasure, and liberation; therefore let (a man) strive after dharma — the learned man who does so is called wise.

PdP 6 74.3

tapasā caiva dānena vratena niyamena ca | tapasā prāpyate svargaḥ sātvikena tathaiva ca

By austerity, by giving, by vows and by self-restraint (dharma is accomplished); by austerity heaven is attained, and likewise by (austerity) of the sattvic kind.

PdP 6 74.4

ihāyāto labhedrājyaṃ krodhalobhavivarjitaḥ | janmāṃtareṇa muktiḥ syātpadaṃ viṃdati vaiṣṇavam

Come here (to this world), free of anger and greed, he would obtain kingship; in another birth there would be release, (and) he finds the Vaiṣṇava station.

PdP 6 74.5

tapasā rājaseneha rājasaścaiva jāyate | taptvā tāmasabhāvena krūrakarmā hi niṣṭhuraḥ

By austerity of the rajasic kind he is born here as a man of rajas; having practised austerity with a tamasic disposition, (he becomes) one of cruel deeds and harsh.

PdP 6 74.6

tapastadrakṣasāṃ coktaṃ bhuktidaṃ tāmasātmanām | yattaptaṃ sātvikaṃ caiva tattapo bhavati dhruvam

That austerity is declared to be of the rākṣasas, granting (only) enjoyment, belonging to those whose nature is tamasic; but what is practised as sattvic — that becomes austerity that is lasting.

PdP 6 74.7

rajastamobhyāṃ niyataṃ tapasyāṃ vane satāṃ vāyubhujāṃ sunirjane | tapasvināṃ caiva dhanādivāṃcchatāṃ vane'pi doṣāḥ prabhavaṃti rāgiṇām

Austerity practised in the forest, in a well-deserted place, by good men who feed on air, is (still) bound up with rajas and tamas; and for ascetics who crave wealth and the like, even in the forest faults arise for those (still) full of passion.

PdP 6 74.8

gṛhe'pi paṃceṃdriyanigrahastapastvakutsite karmaṇi yaḥ pravarttate | nivṛttarāgasya tapovanaṃ gṛhaṃ gṛhāśramo'to gaditaḥ svadharmaḥ

Even in the house, the restraint of the five senses is austerity, for one who engages in blameless action; for one whose passion has ceased, the house is a penance-grove — hence the householder's stage is declared (his) own dharma.

PdP 6 74.9

sudustaraḥ satvajiteṃdriyāṇāṃ saṃhanyate śreṣṭhatamaḥ śubhāśramaḥ | gṛhastu dharmaḥ pravaro manīṣiṇāṃ brahmādibhiścābhihito nagātmaje

Very hard to cross over, the auspicious (forest) stage, best of all, is destroyed for those who have conquered the senses by sattva; but the householder's dharma is foremost for the wise, and has been declared so by Brahmā and the others, O daughter of the mountain.

taptvā tapasvī vipine kṣudhārto gṛhaṃ samāyāti sadānnadātuḥ | bhaktyā sa cānnaṃ pradadāti tasmai tapovibhāgaṃ bhajate hi tasya

Having practised austerity in the wood, the ascetic, tormented by hunger, comes to the house of one who always gives food; and he with devotion presents food to him — indeed he obtains a share of that man's austerity.

PdP 6 74.11

gṛhāśramaṃ jyeṣṭhamihāśramāṇāṃ samyakca yaḥ pālayate manuṣyaḥ | ihaiva bhuṃjansamanuṣyabhogānsvargaṃ prayātīti na saṃśayo'tra | gṛhaṃ sadā pālayatāṃ narāṇāṃ pāpaṃ samāyāti kathaṃ hi devi

And the man who rightly maintains the householder's stage, the foremost of the stages here, enjoying human pleasures in this very (life), goes to heaven — there is no doubt in this. But then, O goddess, how does sin come upon men who always maintain a household?

PdP 6 74.12

gṛhāśramaḥ puṇyatamaḥ sarvadā tīrthavadgṛham | asmingṛhāśrame puṇye dānaṃ deyaṃ viśeṣataḥ

The householder's stage is the most meritorious; the house is always like a place of pilgrimage. In this meritorious householder's stage, giving should especially be practised.

tadgṛhaṃ tu samāśritya ye'rcayaṃti dvijānnarāḥ | āyurlakṣmīstathā putrā na hīyaṃte kadācana

But those men who, resorting to that house, honour brahmins — their lifespan, prosperity, and sons are never diminished.

śṛṇu suṃdari vakṣyāmi mahāpāpaviśodhanam | sarvasaṃpatkaraṃ dānaṃ ihāmutraphalapradam

Listen, fair one, I shall declare the cleansing of great sin: giving, which produces all prosperity and bestows fruit here and in the next world.

gṛhītvā paradravyaṃ ca dvijadevebhya eva hi | dadyātsa nirayaṃ dṛṣṭvā paścādyāti parāṃ gatim

But (if) one takes another's property and gives it to brahmins and gods, he, having seen hell, afterwards goes to the highest state.

śatānīko yathā dānātsaputraścaiva tāritaḥ | dattvānye ca dvijebhyaśca sa gaṃtā dharmato divam

Just as Śatānīka was rescued along with his son by giving; and others too, having given to brahmins, will go by dharma to heaven.

dharmasthāneṣu yairdattaṃ teṣāṃ dharmamudāhṛtam | śṛṇu devi pravakṣyāmi vittadānaṃ samāsataḥ

For those who have given at places of dharma, dharma is declared (theirs). Listen, goddess, I shall declare in brief the giving of wealth.

dehaśuddhikaraṃ dānaṃ na bhūtaṃ na bhaviṣyati | pāpahīno yena pumānjāyate nātra saṃśayaḥ

A gift that purifies the body — (its like) has not been and will not be; by it a man becomes free of sin, there is no doubt here.

PdP 6 74.21

bhogānbhuktvā tataścāyaṃ yāti viṣṇuṃ sanātanam | purā vai brahmaṇā proktaṃ bhārgavāya mahātmane

Then, having enjoyed pleasures, he goes to the eternal Viṣṇu. Formerly indeed it was declared by Brahmā to the great-souled descendant of Bhṛgu,

(and it was told) to Rāma, who was bound by sin, (concerning) the scale-gift and the bull-gift as well. And a king given over to evil deeds performs acts that bind (him) to existence.
