Mahādeva said: I shall declare the greatness of the Gaṅgā as it has been told, O best of sages, by the mere hearing of which sin perishes that very instant. (1) Whoever should say "Gaṅgā, Gaṅgā," even from hundreds of leagues away, is freed from all sins and goes to Viṣṇu's world. (2) Arisen from the lotus-foot, she is renowned by the name Gaṅgā, and she is the destroyer of gross heaps of sins, O Nārada. (3) Narmadā and Sarayū, and likewise the river Vetravatī, Tāpī, Payoṣṇī and Candrā, Vipāśā, the karma-destroying (Karmanāśā), (4) Puṣyā, Pūrṇā and Dīpā, Vidīpā, by the sun's radiance — the fruit that one surely obtains from the gift of a thousand bulls, (5) that fruit one gains in an instant from the sight of the Gaṅgā. This Gaṅgā is of great merit, especially for the slayers of brahmins; (6) for those consigned to hell the Gaṅgā is the remover of sin. And the fruit that there is at an eclipse of the moon or sun, O sinless one, (7) that fruit one gains merely by the sight of the Gaṅgā. As, my son, at sunrise the darkness goes far away, (8) so by the power of the Gaṅgā sin goes to dissolution. She is always to be honoured in the world, pure, destroyer of sin, (9) ever of auspicious form, fashioned of old by Viṣṇu, of divine form, a mother, held to be the purifier of the wretched. (10) As Viṣṇu is among the gods, so the Gaṅgā is the highest river. Those men who bathe (in her) continually in the month of Māgha — (11) for them there is no sorrow for three hundred kalpas. Where the Gaṅgā and the Yamunā are, and where the Sarasvatī, having bathed and drunk there one has a share in liberation, without doubt. (12) Mahādeva said: When out of love I speak talk of you, that is praise of you, O Lord; when I eat, that is an offering to you; when I go, that is service; when I sleep at peace, let that be a prostration at your two feet; and whatever I do, O Master, by that may you, the Lord of the universe, be pleased. (13) By being seen, by being saluted, by being touched and held — the men who are freed by it: such is this water of the Yamunā.

Only so long do men wander on earth, overcome by the miseries of poverty, disease and death that spring from worldly existence, as they do not behold your dark-blue water, O great river, nor place it on their heads, O daughter of the Sun.

She the remembrance of whom at once cuts through the flood of misdeeds, who conquers the train of sins even from a hundred thousand leagues away, whose very name, uttered aloud, purifies the world — by good fortune that Gaṅgā will today be within sight of (my) path.

She on whose road one has set out with a mind eager for the sight (of her) and delighted — in her, in this very act, the accomplished man has first known the river of heaven. Bathing, the twilight rites, the offering to the ancestors, the worship of the gods too, the śrāddha and the feeding of brahmins and the rest — all this becomes complete (here) and gives pleasure to the Lord; that is no great wonder.

She who flows on, shining with a host of excellent qualities — water that removes all sin, dharma itself in liquid flood, the essence of the nectar of the lotus-feet of Mura's foe, a boat across the ocean of sorrow, praised by gods and men, a stairway-path to heaven — to that Bhāgīrathī, glorious Goddess, with joyful mind I make my homage to you.

Where the praise beginning from the Lord of all, and the experiencing of joy, and bathing are declared — the women of heaven, delighted at the sight, and the lord of the gods among the wise, with the expectation of gaining (it): those who bathe in your water, O daughter of Jahnu, even without observance of rules, even doers of evil, plainly obtain godhood; here the Vedas are the authority.

For some, well-spoken men, a crore of births goes by (merely) saying "I am going, I am going"; for some who long for it, a great multitude of years passes though their mind is fixed on it; it is attained by lakhs of good fortune, and dwelling (there) does not fall to us — it is beyond the reach of words; by good luck the excellent Veṇī becomes a guest of my eyes — what (a thing is) Prayāga, O Prayāga!
