उत्तङ्क उवाच ब्रूहि केशव तत्वेन त्वमध्यात्ममनिन्दितम्। श्रुत्वा श्रेयोऽभिधास्यामि शापं वा ते जनार्दन॥

uttaṅka uvāca brūhi keśava tatvena tvamadhyātmamaninditam| śrutvā śreyo'bhidhāsyāmi śāpaṃ vā te janārdana||

Utanka said Do you, O Keshava, tell ine that faultless spiritual science. Having heard your discourse I shall ordain what is for your good or imprecate a curse to you O Janardana!

वासुदेव उवाच तमो रजश्च सत्वं च विद्धि भावान् मदाश्रयान्। तथा रुदान् वसून् वापि विद्धि मत्प्रभवान् द्विज॥

vāsudeva uvāca tamo rajaśca satvaṃ ca viddhi bhāvān madāśrayān| tathā rudān vasūn vāpi viddhi matprabhavān dvija||

Vasudeva said Know that the three qualities of Ignorance, Darkness and Goodness exist, depending on me as their refuge. So also, O twice-born one, know that the Rudras and the Vasus have originated from me.

मयि सर्वाणि भूतानि सर्वभूतेषु चाप्यहम्। स्थित इत्यभिजानीहि मा तेऽभूदत्र संशयः॥

mayi sarvāṇi bhūtāni sarvabhūteṣu cāpyaham| sthita ityabhijānīhi mā te'bhūdatra saṃśayaḥ||

In me are all creatures, and in all creatures do I exist know this. Let no doubt arise in your mind about this.

तथा दैत्यगणान् सर्वान् यक्षगन्धर्वराक्षसान्। नागानप्सरसश्चैव विद्धि मत्प्रभवान् द्विज॥

tathā daityagaṇān sarvān yakṣagandharvarākṣasān| nāgānapsarasaścaiva viddhi matprabhavān dvija||

So also, O twice-born one, know that all the tribes of the Daityas, all the Yakshas, Gandharvas, Rakshasas, Nagas, Apsaras, have originated from me.

सदसच्चैव यत् प्राहुरव्यक्तं व्यक्तमेव च। अक्षरं च क्षरं चैव सर्वमेतन्मदात्मकम्॥

sadasaccaiva yat prāhuravyaktaṃ vyaktameva ca| akṣaraṃ ca kṣaraṃ caiva sarvametanmadātmakam||

Whatever has been called existent and nonexistent, whatever is manifest, and notmanifest, whatever is destructible and indestructible, all have me for their soul.

ये चाश्रमेषु वै धर्माश्चतुर्धा विदिता मुने। वैदिकानि च सर्वाणि विद्धि सर्वं मदात्मकम्॥

ye cāśrameṣu vai dharmāścaturdhā viditā mune| vaidikāni ca sarvāṇi viddhi sarvaṃ madātmakam||

Those fourfold courses of duty which, O ascetic, are known to attach to the (four) modes of life, and all the Vedic duties, have me for their soul.

असच्च सदसच्चैव यद् विश्वं सदसत् परम्। मत्तः परतरं नास्ति देवदेवात् सनातनात्॥

asacca sadasaccaiva yad viśvaṃ sadasat param| mattaḥ parataraṃ nāsti devadevāt sanātanāt||

Whatever is non-existent, whatever is existent and non-existent, and whatever is above that which is existent and not existent, all these which form the universe-are from me. There is nothing higher (or beyond) me who am the eternal god of gods.

ओङ्कारप्रमुखान् वेदान् विद्धि मां त्वं भृगूद्वह। यूपं सोमं चरुं होमं त्रिदशाप्यायनं मखे॥ होतारमपि हव्यं च विद्धि मां भृगुनन्दन। अध्वर्युः कल्पकश्चापि हविः परमसंस्कृतम्॥ उद्गाता चापि मां स्तौति गीतघोषैर्महाध्वरे। प्रायश्चित्तेषु मां ब्रह्मशान्तिमङ्गलवाचकाः॥ स्तुवन्ति विश्वकर्माणं सततं द्विजसत्तम।

oṅkārapramukhān vedān viddhi māṃ tvaṃ bhṛgūdvaha| yūpaṃ somaṃ caruṃ homaṃ tridaśāpyāyanaṃ makhe|| hotāramapi havyaṃ ca viddhi māṃ bhṛgunandana| adhvaryuḥ kalpakaścāpi haviḥ paramasaṃskṛtam|| udgātā cāpi māṃ stauti gītaghoṣairmahādhvare| prāyaścitteṣu māṃ brahmaśāntimaṅgalavācakāḥ|| stuvanti viśvakarmāṇaṃ satataṃ dvijasattama|

O perpetuator of Bhrigu's race, know that all the Veda beginning with the original syllable) One are at one with me. Know, O son of Bhrigu's race, that I am the sacrificial stake; I am the Soma (drunk in sacrifices); I am the Charu (cooked in sacrifices for being offered to the deities); I am the Homa (that is performed); I am those deeds which sacrificers perform for pleasing the celestials; I am even the pourer of the sacrificial libation; and I am the Havi or libation that is poured. I am the Adhvaryu. I am the Kalpaka; and I am the highly sanctified sacrificial Havi. It is me whom the Udgatri, in the great sacrifice, hymns by the sound of his songs. In all rites of expiation, O Brahmana, the utters of auspicious Mantras and bencdictions fraught with peace sing my praises who am the artificer, o foremost of twice-born ones, of the universe.

मम विद्धि सुतं धर्ममग्रजं द्विजसत्तम॥ मानसं दयितं विप्र सर्वभूतदयात्मकम्।

mama viddhi sutaṃ dharmamagrajaṃ dvijasattama|| mānasaṃ dayitaṃ vipra sarvabhūtadayātmakam|

Know, O best of twice-born persons, that Dharma is my eldest-born offspring, originated from my mind, O learned Brahmana, whose essence is for all creatures.

तत्राहं वर्तमानैश्च निवृत्तैश्चैव मानवैः॥ बह्वीः संसरमाणो वै योनीर्वामि सत्तम। धर्मसंरक्षणार्थाय धर्मसंस्थापनाय च॥

tatrāhaṃ vartamānaiśca nivṛttaiścaiva mānavaiḥ|| bahvīḥ saṃsaramāṇo vai yonīrvāmi sattama| dharmasaṃrakṣaṇārthāya dharmasaṃsthāpanāya ca||

Constantly changing myself, I take birth in various wombs. O best of men, for upholding that son of mine, with the help of men now existing in or departed from the world. Indeed, I do this for protecting Virtue and for establishing it.

तैस्तैर्वेषैश्च रूपैश्च त्रिषु लोकेषु भार्गव। अहं विष्णुरहं ब्रह्मा शक्रोऽथ प्रभवाप्ययः॥

taistairveṣaiśca rūpaiśca triṣu lokeṣu bhārgava| ahaṃ viṣṇurahaṃ brahmā śakro'tha prabhavāpyayaḥ||

In those forms that I assume for the purpose, I am known, O son of Bhrigu's race, in the three worlds as Vishnu and Brahman and Shakra. I am the origin and I am the destruction of all things.

भूतग्रामस्य सर्वस्य स्रष्टा संहार एव च। अधर्मे वर्तमानानां सर्वेषामहमच्युतः॥

bhūtagrāmasya sarvasya sraṣṭā saṃhāra eva ca| adharme vartamānānāṃ sarveṣāmahamacyutaḥ||

I am the creator of al existent objects and I am their destroyer. Knowing no change myself, I am the destroyer of all those creatures that live in sinfulness.

धर्मस्य सेतुं बनामि चलिते चलिते युगे। तास्ता योनीः प्रविश्याहं प्रजानां हितकाम्यया।॥

dharmasya setuṃ banāmi calite calite yuge| tāstā yonīḥ praviśyāhaṃ prajānāṃ hitakāmyayā|||

In every cycle I have to repair the causeway of Virtue, entering into various kinds of wombs from desire of doing good to my creatures.

यदा त्वहं देवयोनौ वर्तामि भृगुनन्दना तदाहं देववत् सर्वमाचरामि न संशयः॥

yadā tvahaṃ devayonau vartāmi bhṛgunandanā tadāhaṃ devavat sarvamācarāmi na saṃśayaḥ||

When, O son of Bhrigu's race, I live in the order of the celestials, I then indeed, act in i every respect as a celestial.

यदा गन्धर्वयोनौ वा वर्तामि भृगुनन्दना तदा गन्धर्ववत् सर्वमाचरामि न संशयः॥

yadā gandharvayonau vā vartāmi bhṛgunandanā tadā gandharvavat sarvamācarāmi na saṃśayaḥ||

When I live in the order of the Gandharvas, I then, O son of Bhrigu's race, act in every . respect as a Gandharva.

नागयोनौ यदा चैव तथा वर्तामि नागवत्। यक्षराक्षसयोन्योस्तु यथावद् विचराम्यहम्॥ ।

nāgayonau yadā caiva tathā vartāmi nāgavat| yakṣarākṣasayonyostu yathāvad vicarāmyaham|| |

When I live in the order of the Nagas I then act as a Naga, and when I live in the order of Yakshas or that of Rakshasas, I act after the manner of that order.

मानुष्ये वर्तमाने तु कृपणं याचिता मया। न च ते जानसम्मोहा वचोऽगृहन्त मे हितम्॥

mānuṣye vartamāne tu kṛpaṇaṃ yācitā mayā| na ca te jānasammohā vaco'gṛhanta me hitam||

Born now in the order of men I must act a human being. I appealed to them (the Kauravas) most piteously. But stupefied as they were and deprived of their senses, they refused to take my words.

भयं च महदुद्दिश्य त्रासिताः कुरवो मया। क्रुद्धेन भूत्वा तु पुनर्यथावदनुदर्शिताः॥

bhayaṃ ca mahaduddiśya trāsitāḥ kuravo mayā| kruddhena bhūtvā tu punaryathāvadanudarśitāḥ||

I frightened them, filled with anger referring to some great fear. But once more I showed themselves my usual human forin.

तेऽधर्मेणेहं संयुक्ताः परीताः कालधर्मणा। धर्मेण निहता युद्धे गताः स्वर्गं न संशयः॥

te'dharmeṇehaṃ saṃyuktāḥ parītāḥ kāladharmaṇā| dharmeṇa nihatā yuddhe gatāḥ svargaṃ na saṃśayaḥ||

Possessed as they were of unrighteousness, and assailed by the virtue of liine, all of them have been righteously killed in battle, and have, forsooth, gone to the celestial region.

लोकेषु पाण्डवाश्चैव गताः ख्याति द्विजोत्तम। एतत् ते सर्वमाख्यातं यन्मां त्वं परिपृच्छसि॥

lokeṣu pāṇḍavāścaiva gatāḥ khyāti dvijottama| etat te sarvamākhyātaṃ yanmāṃ tvaṃ paripṛcchasi||

The Pandavas also, O best of Brahmanas have acquired great fame. I have these told you all that you had asked me.
