ब्राह्मण उवाच अतः परं प्रवक्ष्यामि तृतीयं गुणमुत्तमम्। सर्वभूतहितं लोके सतां धर्ममनिन्दितम्॥
brāhmaṇa uvāca ataḥ paraṃ pravakṣyāmi tṛtīyaṃ guṇamuttamam| sarvabhūtahitaṃ loke satāṃ dharmamaninditam||
Brahman said I shall, after this, describe to you that excellent quality which is the third. It is beneficial to all creatures in the world, and unblamable, and forms the conduct of the good.

आनन्दः प्रीतिरुद्रेक: प्रकाश्यं सुखमेव च। अकार्पण्यमसंरम्भः सन्तोष: श्रद्दधानता॥ क्षमा धृतिरहिंसा च समता सत्यमार्जवम्। अक्रोधश्चानसूया च शौचं दाक्ष्यं पराक्रमः॥
ānandaḥ prītirudreka: prakāśyaṃ sukhameva ca| akārpaṇyamasaṃrambhaḥ santoṣa: śraddadhānatā|| kṣamā dhṛtirahiṃsā ca samatā satyamārjavam| akrodhaścānasūyā ca śaucaṃ dākṣyaṃ parākramaḥ||
Joy, satisfaction, nobility, enlightenment, and happiness, absence of stinginess, absence of fear, contentment, disposition for faith, forgiveness, courage, abstention from injuring any creature, equability, truth, straightforwardness, absence of anger, absence of malice, purity, cleverness, prowess, belong to the quality of Goodness.

मुधा ज्ञानं मुधा वृत्तं मुधा सेवा मुधा श्रमः। एवं यो युक्तधर्मः स्यात् सोऽमुत्रात्यन्तमश्नुते॥
mudhā jñānaṃ mudhā vṛttaṃ mudhā sevā mudhā śramaḥ| evaṃ yo yuktadharmaḥ syāt so'mutrātyantamaśnute||
He who is devoted to the duty of Yoga, considering knowledge to the vain conduct to be vain, service to be vain, and mode of life to be vain, attains to what is highest in the next world.

निर्ममो निरहङ्कारो निराशी: सर्वतः समः। अकामभूत इत्येव सतां धर्मः सनातनः॥
nirmamo nirahaṅkāro nirāśī: sarvataḥ samaḥ| akāmabhūta ityeva satāṃ dharmaḥ sanātanaḥ||
Freedom from cgoism, freedom from expectations, loO king on all impartially, and freedom from desire, these form the cternal religion of the good.

विश्राभो हीस्तितिक्षा च त्याग शौचमतन्द्रिता। आनृशंस्यमसम्मोहो दया भूतेष्वपैशुनम्॥ हर्षस्तुष्टिविस्मयश्च विनयः साधुवृत्तिता। शान्तिकी शुद्धिश्च शुभा बुद्धिर्विमोचनम्॥ उपेक्षा ब्रह्मचर्ये च परित्यागश्च सर्वशः। निर्ममत्वमनाशीष्ट्वमपरिक्षतधर्मता॥ मुधा दानं मुधा यज्ञो मुधाऽधीतं मुधा व्रतम्। मुधा प्रतिग्रहश्चैव मुधा धर्मो मुधा तपः॥
viśrābho hīstitikṣā ca tyāga śaucamatandritā| ānṛśaṃsyamasammoho dayā bhūteṣvapaiśunam|| harṣastuṣṭivismayaśca vinayaḥ sādhuvṛttitā| śāntikī śuddhiśca śubhā buddhirvimocanam|| upekṣā brahmacarye ca parityāgaśca sarvaśaḥ| nirmamatvamanāśīṣṭvamaparikṣatadharmatā|| mudhā dānaṃ mudhā yajño mudhā'dhītaṃ mudhā vratam| mudhā pratigrahaścaiva mudhā dharmo mudhā tapaḥ||
Confidence, modesty, forgiveness, renunciation, purity, absence of laziness, absence of cruelty, absence of delusion, mercy to all creatures, absence of the disposition to calumniate, exultation, satisfaction, rapture, humility, good conduct, purity in all acts having for their object the attainment of tranquility, righteous understanding, liberation, indifference, celibacy, complete renunciation, freedom from the idea of mineness, freedom from expectations, unbroken observance of virtuc, belic that gifts are vain, sacrifices are vain, study is vain, vows are vain, acceptance of gifts is vain, observance of duties is vain, and penances are vain.

एवंवृत्तास्तु ये केचिल्लोकेऽस्मिन् सत्त्वसंश्रयाः। ब्राह्मणा ब्रह्मयोनिस्थास्ते धीराः साधुदर्शिनः॥
evaṃvṛttāstu ye kecilloke'smin sattvasaṃśrayāḥ| brāhmaṇā brahmayonisthāste dhīrāḥ sādhudarśinaḥ||
Those Brahmanas in this world, whose conduct is marked by these virtues, who follow virtue, who abide in the Vedas, are said to be wise and possessed of correctness of vision.

हित्वा सर्वाणि पापानि निःशोका ह्यथ मानवाः। दिवं प्राप्य तु ते धीराः कुर्वते वै ततस्तनूः॥
hitvā sarvāṇi pāpāni niḥśokā hyatha mānavāḥ| divaṃ prāpya tu te dhīrāḥ kurvate vai tatastanūḥ||
Freed from sins and grief, those wise men attain to the celestial region and create various bodies (for themselves).

ईशित्वं च वशित्वं च लघुत्वं मनसश्च ते। विकुर्वते महात्मानो देवास्त्रिदिवगा इव॥
īśitvaṃ ca vaśitvaṃ ca laghutvaṃ manasaśca te| vikurvate mahātmāno devāstridivagā iva||
The power of governing everything, selfcontrol, minuteness, these great ones make by operations of their own mind, like the gods themselves living in the celestial region.

अर्ध्वस्रोतस इत्येते देवा वैकारिकाः स्मृताः। विकुर्वन्तः प्रकृत्या वै दिवं प्राप्तास्ततस्ततः॥
ardhvasrotasa ityete devā vaikārikāḥ smṛtāḥ| vikurvantaḥ prakṛtyā vai divaṃ prāptāstatastataḥ||
Such men are said to have their courses directed upwards. They are veritable gods capable of modifying all things. Attaining to the celestial region, they modify all things by their very nature.

यद् यदिच्छन्ति तत् सर्व भजन्ते विभजन्ति च। इत्येतत् सात्त्विकं वृत्तं कथितं वो द्विजर्षभाः। एतद् विज्ञाय लभते विधिवद् यद् यदिच्छति॥
yad yadicchanti tat sarva bhajante vibhajanti ca| ityetat sāttvikaṃ vṛttaṃ kathitaṃ vo dvijarṣabhāḥ| etad vijñāya labhate vidhivad yad yadicchati||
They get whatever objects they desire and cnjoy them. Thus have I, you foremost of twice-born ones, described to you what that conduct is which belongs to the quality of goodness. Understanding these duly, one acquires whatever objects one desires.

प्रकीर्तिताः सत्त्वगुणा विशेषतो यथावदुक्त गुणवृत्तमेव च। नरस्तु यो वेद गुणानिमान् सदा गुणान् स भुङ्क्ते न गुणैः स युज्यते।
prakīrtitāḥ sattvaguṇā viśeṣato yathāvadukta guṇavṛttameva ca| narastu yo veda guṇānimān sadā guṇān sa bhuṅkte na guṇaiḥ sa yujyate|
The qualities which belong to goodness have been declared particularly. The conduct which those qualities form, has also been properly described. That man who always understands these qualities, succeeds in enjoying the qualities without being attached to them.

नरस्तु यो वेद गुणानिमान् सदा गुणान् स भुङ्क्ते न गुणैः स युज्यते।
narastu yo veda guṇānimān sadā guṇān sa bhuṅkte na guṇaiḥ sa yujyate|
The qualities which belong to goodness have been declared particularly. The conduct which those qualities form, has also been properly described. That man who always understands these qualities, succeeds in enjoying the qualities without being attached to them.
