marutta uvāca bhavantaṃ kathayitvā tu mama devarṣisattamaḥ| tato māmabhyanujñāya praviṣṭo havyavāhanam||

vyāsa uvāca śrutvā tu pārthivasyaitat saṃvartaḥ pramudaṃ gataḥ| etāvadahamapyevaṃ śaknuyāmiti so'bravīt||
Vyasa said Hearing these words of the king Marutta, Samvarta was highly pleased, and he said-I too am perfectly able to do all that.

tato maruttamunmatto vācā nirbhartsayanniva| rukṣayā brāhmaṇo rājan punaḥ punarathābravīt|| vātapradhānena mayā svacittavaśavartinā| evaṃ vikṛtarūpeṇa kathaṃ yājitumicchasi|| bhrātā mama samarthaśca vāsavena ca saṃgataḥ| vartate yājane caiva tena karmāṇi kāraya||
Then, O prince, that Brahmana, raving like a maniac, and continually scolding Marutta with rude words, again accosted him thus, I am afflicted with a brain disorder, and, I always act according to the fretful caprices of my own mind, why are you then bent upon having this sacrifice performed by a priest of such a peculiar nature; my brother is able to officiate at sacrifices, and he has gone over to Vasava (Indra), and is engaged in celebrating his sacrifices, do you therefore have your sacrifice performed by him.

gārhasthyaṃ caiva yājyāśca sarvā gṛhyāśca devatāḥ| pūrvajena mamākṣiptaṃ śarīraṃ varjitaṃ tvidam|| nāhaṃ tenānanujñātastvāmāvikṣita karhicit| yājayeyaṃ kathaṃcid vai sa hi pūjyatamo mama||
My elder brother has taken away by force from me all my houschold articles and mystical gods, and sacrificing clients, and has now left to me only this physical body of mine, and, O son of Avikshit, as he deserves all respect from me, I cannot by any means officiate at you sacrifice, unless he permits me.
— tr. M.N. Dutt (1891–96) (public domain)
MBh 9 175.9
You must therefore go to Brihaspati first, and taking his permission you can return to me, if you have any desire to celebrate a sacrifice, and then only shall I officiate at your sacrifice.

MBh 9 175.10
marutta uvāca bṛhaspatiṃ gataḥ pūrvamahaṃ saṃvarta tacchṛṇu| na māṃ kāmayate yājyamasau vāsavakāmyayā||
Marutta said Do you listen to me, O Samvarta, I did go to Brihaspati first, but wishing the patronage of Vasava, he did not wish to have me as his sacrificer.
— tr. M.N. Dutt (1891–96) (public domain)
MBh 9 175.11
amaraṃ yājyamāsādya yājayiṣye na mānuṣam| śakreṇa pratiṣiddho'haṃ maruttaṃ mā sma yājayaḥ|| spardhate hi mayā vipra sadā hi sa tu pārthivaḥ| evamastviti cāpyukto bhrātrā te balasūdanaḥ||
He said, Having secured the priest-hood of the Immortals, I do not wish to act for the mortals, and, I have been forbidden by Shakra (Indra) to officiate at Marutta's sacrifice, as he told me that Marutta having become king, was always filled with a desire to rival him. And to this your brother agreed by saying to the destroyer of Vala (Indra), Be it so.

sa māmadhigataṃ premṇā yājyatvena bubhūṣati| devarājaṃ samāśritya tad viddhi munipuṅgava||
Know, O best of ascetics, that as he had succeeded in getting the protection of the King of the Celestials, I went to him with gratified heart, but he did not agree to act as my priest.
— tr. M.N. Dutt (1891–96) (public domain)
MBh 9 175.13
so'hamicchāmi bhavatā sarvasvenāpi yājitum| kāmaye samatikrāntuṃ vāsavaṃ tvatkṛtairguṇaiḥ||
And thus repulsed, I now wish to spend all I possess, to have this sacrifice performed by you, and to outstrip Vasava by the merit of your good offices.
— tr. M.N. Dutt (1891–96) (public domain)
MBh 9 175.14
na hi me vartate buddhirgantuṃ brahman bṛhaspatim| pratyākhyāto hi tenāsmi tathā'napakṛte sati||
As I have been repulsed by Brihaspati for no fault of mine, I have now no desire, O Brahmana, to go to him to scek his help in this sacrifice.
— tr. M.N. Dutt (1891–96) (public domain)
MBh 9 175.15
saṃvarta uvāca cikīrṣasi yathākāmaṃ sarvametat tvayi dhruvam| yadi sarvānabhiprāyān kartā'si mama pārthiva|| yājyamānaṃ mayā hi tvāṃ bṛhaspatipurandarau| dviṣatāṃ samabhikruddhāvetadekaṃ samarthayeḥ||
Samvarta said I can certainly, O king, do all that you wish, if only you agree to do all that I shall ask you to do, but I apprehend that Brihaspati and Purandara (Indra) when they will learn that I am engaged in celebrating your sacrifice, will be filled with anger, and do all they can to injure you.
— tr. M.N. Dutt (1891–96) (public domain)
MBh 9 175.16
sthairyamatra kathaṃ me syāt sattvaṃ niḥsaṃśayaṃ kuru| kupitastvāṃ na hīdānīṃ bhasma kuryāṃ sabāndhavam||
Therefore, do you assure me of your steadfastness, so as to ensure my coolness and constancy as otherwise, if I am filled with anger against you, I shall reduce (destroy) you and your kindred to ashes.

MBh 9 175.17
marutta uvāca yāvat tapet sahasrāṃśustiṣṭheraṃścāpi parvatāḥ| tāvallokānna labheyaṃ tyajeyaṃ saṅgataṃ yadi|| viṣayaiḥ saṅgattaṃ cāstu mā cāpi śubhabuddhitvaṃ labheyamiha karhicit| tyajeyaṃ saṅgataṃ yadi||
Marutta said If ever I forsake you, may I never attain the blessed regions as long as the mountains shall exist, and the thousand rayed sun continue to pour heat; if I forsake you, may I never gain true wisdom, and remain for ever addicted to worldly (imaterial) works.
— tr. M.N. Dutt (1891–96) (public domain)
MBh 9 175.18
saṃvarta uvāca āvikṣita śubhā buddhivartatāṃ tava karmasu| yājanaṃ hi mamāpyeva vartate hṛdi pārthiva|| abhidhāsye ca te rājannakṣayaṃ dravyamuttamam| yena devān sagandharvāśakraṃ cābhibhaviṣyasi||
Samvarta said Listen, Son of Avikshit, excellent as is your inclination to perform this act, so too, O king, have I in my mind the ability to perform the sacrifice, I tell you, O king, that your good things will become imperishable, and that you shall lord it over Shakra and the Celestials with Gandharvas.

MBh 9 175.19
na tu me vartate buddhirdhane yājyeṣu vā punaḥ| vipriyaṃ tu kariṣyāmi bhrātuścendrasya cobhayoḥ||
For myself, I have no wish to hoard riches or sacrificial presents; I shall only do what is disagrecable to both Indra and my brother.

MBh 9 175.20
gamayiṣyāmi śakreṇa samatāmapi te dhruvam| priyaṃ ca te kariṣyāmi satyametad bravīmi te||
I shall certainly make you attain equality with Shakra, and I tell you truly that I shall do what is agreeable to you.
