वैशम्पायन उवाच ततो युधिष्ठिरो राजा ज्ञातीनां ये हता युधि। श्राद्धानि कारयामास तेषां पृथगुदारधीः॥

vaiśampāyana uvāca tato yudhiṣṭhiro rājā jñātīnāṃ ye hatā yudhi| śrāddhāni kārayāmāsa teṣāṃ pṛthagudāradhīḥ||

Vaishampayana said After this the noble king Yudhishthira caused the Shraddha rites to be performed for every one of his kinsmen killed in battle.

धृतराष्ट्रो ददौ राजा पुत्राणामौर्ध्वदेहिकम्। सर्वकामगुणोपेतमन्नं गाश्च धनानि च॥

dhṛtarāṣṭro dadau rājā putrāṇāmaurdhvadehikam| sarvakāmaguṇopetamannaṃ gāśca dhanāni ca||

King Dhritarashtra also distributed, for the good of his dead sons, excellent food, and kine, and immense wealth, and many beautiful and costly gems amongst the Brahmanas.

रत्नानि च विचित्राणि महार्हाणि महायशाः। युधिष्ठिरस्तु द्रोणस्य कर्णस्य च महात्मनः॥ धृष्टद्युम्नाभिमन्युभ्यां हैडिम्बस्य च रक्षसः। विराटप्रभृतीनां च सुहृदामुपकारिणाम्॥ द्रुपदद्रौपदेयानां द्रौपद्या सहितो ददौ।

ratnāni ca vicitrāṇi mahārhāṇi mahāyaśāḥ| yudhiṣṭhirastu droṇasya karṇasya ca mahātmanaḥ|| dhṛṣṭadyumnābhimanyubhyāṃ haiḍimbasya ca rakṣasaḥ| virāṭaprabhṛtīnāṃ ca suhṛdāmupakāriṇām|| drupadadraupadeyānāṃ draupadyā sahito dadau|

Yudhishthira, accompanied by Draupadi, distributed much wealth for the sake of Drona and the great Karna, of Dhrishtadyumna and Abhimanyu, of the Rakshasa Ghatotkacha the son of Hidimba, and of Virata, and his other well-wishers who had served him loyally, and of Drupada and the five sons of Draupadi.

ब्राह्मणानां सहस्राणि पृथगेकैकमुद्दिशन्॥ धनै रत्नैश्च गोभिश्च वस्त्रैश्च समतर्पयत्।

brāhmaṇānāṃ sahasrāṇi pṛthagekaikamuddiśan|| dhanai ratnaiśca gobhiśca vastraiśca samatarpayat|

For each of these, the king pleased thousands of Brahmanas with presents of wealth, gems, kine and clothes.

ये चान्ये पृथिवीपाला येषां नास्ति सुहृज्जनः॥ उद्दिश्योद्दिश्य तेषां च चक्रे राजौर्ध्वदेहिकम्।

ye cānye pṛthivīpālā yeṣāṃ nāsti suhṛjjanaḥ|| uddiśyoddiśya teṣāṃ ca cakre rājaurdhvadehikam|

The king performed the Shraddha rite for the good, in the next world, of every one of those kings also who had been killed in the battle without a single excepted kinsman or friend.

सभाः प्रपाश्च विविधास्तटाकानि च पाण्डवः॥ सुहृदां कारयामास सर्वेषामौर्ध्वदेहिकम्।

sabhāḥ prapāśca vividhāstaṭākāni ca pāṇḍavaḥ|| suhṛdāṃ kārayāmāsa sarveṣāmaurdhvadehikam|

And the king also, for the good of the souls of all his friends, set up houses for the distribution of food, and erected places for the distribution of water, and tanks to be excavated in their names.

स तेषामनृणो भूत्वा गत्वा लोकेष्ववाच्यताम्॥ कृतकृत्योऽभवद् राजा प्रजा धर्मेण पालयन्।

sa teṣāmanṛṇo bhūtvā gatvā lokeṣvavācyatām|| kṛtakṛtyo'bhavad rājā prajā dharmeṇa pālayan|

Thus satisfying the debt he owed to them and warding off the chance of censure in the world, the king became happy and began to protect his subjects virtuously.

धृतराष्ट्रं यथापूर्वं गान्धारी विदुरं तथा॥ सर्वांश्च कौरवान् मान्यान् भृत्यांश्च समपूजयत्।

dhṛtarāṣṭraṃ yathāpūrvaṃ gāndhārī viduraṃ tathā|| sarvāṃśca kauravān mānyān bhṛtyāṃśca samapūjayat|

He showed due honour as before, to Dhritarashtra, and Gandhari, and Vidura, and to all the Kaurava elders and to all the officers.

याच तत्र स्त्रियः काश्चिद्धतवीरा हतात्मजाः॥ सर्वास्ताः कौरवो राजा सम्पूज्यापालयद् घृणी।

yāca tatra striyaḥ kāściddhatavīrā hatātmajāḥ|| sarvāstāḥ kauravo rājā sampūjyāpālayad ghṛṇī|

The kind Kuru king honoured and protected all those ladies also who had, for the battle, been deprived of their heroic husbands and sons.

दीनान्धकृपणानां च गृहाच्छादनभोजनैः॥ आनृशंस्यपरो राजा चकारानुग्रहं प्रभुः।

dīnāndhakṛpaṇānāṃ ca gṛhācchādanabhojanaiḥ|| ānṛśaṃsyaparo rājā cakārānugrahaṃ prabhuḥ|

The powerful king showed kindness towards the destitute and the blind and the helpless by giving them food, clothes and protection.

स विजित्य महीं कृत्स्नामानृण्यं प्राप्य वैरिषु। निःसपत्नः सुखी राजा विजहार युधिष्ठिरः॥

sa vijitya mahīṃ kṛtsnāmānṛṇyaṃ prāpya vairiṣu| niḥsapatnaḥ sukhī rājā vijahāra yudhiṣṭhiraḥ||

Freed from foes and having vanquished the whole Earth, king Yudhishthira began to enjoy great happiness."
