संजय उवाच तद् धर्मशीलस्य वचो निशम्य राज्ञः क्रुद्धस्यातिरथो महात्मा। उवाच दुर्धर्षमदीनसत्त्वं युधिष्ठिरं जिष्णुरनन्तवीर्यः॥
saṃjaya uvāca tad dharmaśīlasya vaco niśamya rājñaḥ kruddhasyātiratho mahātmā| uvāca durdharṣamadīnasattvaṃ yudhiṣṭhiraṃ jiṣṇuranantavīryaḥ||
Sanjaya said Hearing those words of the pious kirg, who was all anger, the great warrior Jishnu of indomitable energy said to the irrepressible and

अर्जुन उवाच संशप्तकैर्युध्यमानस्य मेऽद्य सेनाग्रयायी कुरुसैन्येषु राजन्। आशीविषाभान् खगमान् प्रमुञ्चन् द्रौणिः पुरस्तात् सहसाभ्यतिष्ठत्॥
arjuna uvāca saṃśaptakairyudhyamānasya me'dya senāgrayāyī kurusainyeṣu rājan| āśīviṣābhān khagamān pramuñcan drauṇiḥ purastāt sahasābhyatiṣṭhat||
O king, while fighting with the Samsaptakas today, Drona's son, the leader of the Kuru army, all of a sudden came upon me discharging arrows that were like deadly serpents.

दृष्ट्वा रथं मेघरवं ममैव समस्तसेना च रणेऽभ्यतिष्ठत्। तेषामहं पञ्च शतानि हत्वा ततो द्रौणिमगभं पार्थिवाग्र्य॥
dṛṣṭvā rathaṃ megharavaṃ mamaiva samastasenā ca raṇe'bhyatiṣṭhat| teṣāmahaṃ pañca śatāni hatvā tato drauṇimagabhaṃ pārthivāgrya||
Seeing my car rattling like a cloud, all the soldiers stood encircling it. Killing them all, who were full five hundred in number, I proceeded, O mightest of kings, against Drona's son.

स मा समासाद्य नरेन्द्र यत्त: समभ्ययात् सिंहमिव द्विपेन्द्रः। अकार्षीच रथिनामुजिहीर्षां महाराज वध्यता कौरवाणाम्॥
sa mā samāsādya narendra yatta: samabhyayāt siṃhamiva dvipendraḥ| akārṣīca rathināmujihīrṣāṃ mahārāja vadhyatā kauravāṇām||
Encountering me, O king, the hero rushed resolutely against me like a leader of elephants rushing upon a lion and intended to rescue the warriors who were being slain by me.

ततो रणे भारत दुष्प्रकम्प्य आचार्यपुत्रः प्रवरः कुरूणाम्। जनार्दनं चैव विषाग्निकल्पैः॥
tato raṇe bhārata duṣprakampya ācāryaputraḥ pravaraḥ kurūṇām| janārdanaṃ caiva viṣāgnikalpaiḥ||
Later on in the battle, the invincible preceptor's son, the foremost of Kuru warriors, afflicted me and Janardana with arrows poignant like poison and fire.

अष्टागवामष्ट शतानि बाणान् मया प्रयुद्धस्य वहन्ति तस्य। तांस्तेन सुक्तानहमस्य बाणैळनाशयं वायुरिवाभ्रजालम्॥
aṣṭāgavāmaṣṭa śatāni bāṇān mayā prayuddhasya vahanti tasya| tāṃstena suktānahamasya bāṇail̤anāśayaṃ vāyurivābhrajālam||
While he fought with me, eight carts each drawn by eight bullocks conveyed his hundreds of arrows. Like a wind dissipating clouds I baffled the arrows he showered upon me.

नाकर्णपूर्णायतरिप्रमुक्तान्। स्तथा यथा प्रावृषि कालमेघः॥
nākarṇapūrṇāyataripramuktān| stathā yathā prāvṛṣi kālameghaḥ||
Like a dark cloud discharging its watery contents in downpours he, drawing his bowstring to his very ears, showered upon me with skill and force thousands of other arrows.

नैवाददानं न च संदधानं जानीमहे कतरेणास्यतीति। वामेन वा यदि वा दक्षिणेन स द्रोणपुत्रः समरे पर्यवर्तत्॥
naivādadānaṃ na ca saṃdadhānaṃ jānīmahe katareṇāsyatīti| vāmena vā yadi vā dakṣiṇena sa droṇaputraḥ samare paryavartat||
So quickly did he move about in the battlefield that we could not discern from which side did he shoot his arrows, right or left, nor could we ascertain when he took up the arrows and when he discharged them.

तस्याततं मण्डलमेव सज्यं प्रदृश्यते कार्मुकं द्रोणसूनोः। सोऽविध्यन्मां पञ्चभिर्दोणपुत्रः शितैः शरैः पञ्चभिर्वासुदेवम्॥
tasyātataṃ maṇḍalameva sajyaṃ pradṛśyate kārmukaṃ droṇasūnoḥ| so'vidhyanmāṃ pañcabhirdoṇaputraḥ śitaiḥ śaraiḥ pañcabhirvāsudevam||
In fact, always we saw the bow of Drona's son drawn to a circle. At last he struck me with five sharp arrows and Vasudeva with another five.

अहं हि तं त्रिंशता वज्रकल्पैः समार्दयं निमिषस्यान्तरेणा क्षणाच्छवावित्समरूपौ बभूव समादितो मद्विसृष्टैः पृषत्कैः॥
ahaṃ hi taṃ triṃśatā vajrakalpaiḥ samārdayaṃ nimiṣasyāntareṇā kṣaṇācchavāvitsamarūpau babhūva samādito madvisṛṣṭaiḥ pṛṣatkaiḥ||
In a moment, however, I struck him with thirty thunder-bolt like arrows. Greatly wounded with the shafts discharged by me he ere long looked like a porcupine.

स विक्षरन् रुधिरं सर्वगात्रे रथानीकं सूतसूनोर्विवेश। नसौ प्रपश्यन् रुधिरप्रदिग्धान्॥
sa vikṣaran rudhiraṃ sarvagātre rathānīkaṃ sūtasūnorviveśa| nasau prapaśyan rudhirapradigdhān||
All his limbs were covered with blood. Beholding is soldiers, the best of warriors, bathed in blood and overpowered by me, the son of Suta soon entered into the detachment of car-warriors.

ततोऽभिभूतं युधि वीक्ष्य सैन्यं वित्रस्तयोधं दुतवाजिनागम्। पञ्चाशता रथमुख्यैः समेत्य कर्णस्त्वरन् मामुपायात् प्रमाथी॥
tato'bhibhūtaṃ yudhi vīkṣya sainyaṃ vitrastayodhaṃ dutavājināgam| pañcāśatā rathamukhyaiḥ sametya karṇastvaran māmupāyāt pramāthī||
Beholding the soldiers terror-stricken and over-powered by me in battle and seeing the elephants and horses flying away, Karna at once marched against me with fifty car warriors. Killing them, however and avoiding Karna I have come here presently to see you.

तान् सूदयित्वाहमपास्य कर्ण दुष्टुं भवन्तं त्वतयाभियातः। सर्वेपञ्चाला झुद्विजन्ते स्म कर्णं दृष्ट्वा गाव: केसरिणं यथैव॥
tān sūdayitvāhamapāsya karṇa duṣṭuṃ bhavantaṃ tvatayābhiyātaḥ| sarvepañcālā jhudvijante sma karṇaṃ dṛṣṭvā gāva: kesariṇaṃ yathaiva||
Seeing Karna, the Panchalas are all filled with fright even like the kine on seeing a lion. Like men entering into the gaping jaws of Death the Prabhadrakas, O king, have confronted Karna.

मृत्योरास्यं व्यात्तमिवाभिपद्य प्रभद्रकाः कर्णमासाद्य राजन्। स्तदा कर्णः प्राहिणोन्मृतयुसद्म॥
mṛtyorāsyaṃ vyāttamivābhipadya prabhadrakāḥ karṇamāsādya rājan| stadā karṇaḥ prāhiṇonmṛtayusadma||
Karna has already killed seventeen hundred of these car-warriors. The son of Suta did not lose heart till he came to our view.

न चाप्यभूत् कान्तमनाः स राजन् यावन्नास्मान् दृष्ट्वान् सूतपुत्रः। मश्वतथाम्ना पूर्वतरं क्षतं च॥ मन्ये कालमपयानस्य राजन् क्रूरात् कर्णात् तेऽहमचितन्त्यकर्मन्।
na cāpyabhūt kāntamanāḥ sa rājan yāvannāsmān dṛṣṭvān sūtaputraḥ| maśvatathāmnā pūrvataraṃ kṣataṃ ca|| manye kālamapayānasya rājan krūrāt karṇāt te'hamacitantyakarman|
You were first engaged with Ashvatthama and awfully wounded by him. Afterwards Karna saw you. I thought, O you of wonderful deeds, that coming away from the wanton Karna you were enjoying rest.

मया कर्णस्यास्त्रमिदं पुरस्ताद् युद्धे दृष्टं पाण्डव चित्ररूपम्॥ न ह्यन्ययोद्धा विद्यते सृञ्जायानां महारथं योऽद्य सहेत कर्णम्।
mayā karṇasyāstramidaṃ purastād yuddhe dṛṣṭaṃ pāṇḍava citrarūpam|| na hyanyayoddhā vidyate sṛñjāyānāṃ mahārathaṃ yo'dya saheta karṇam|
O son of Pandu, I saw Karna's wonderful weapon being carried in front of the army. Methinks there is none amongst the Srinjayas who will be able to withstand the mighty carwarrior Karna.

शैनेयो मे सात्यकिश्चक्ररक्षौ धृष्टद्युम्नश्चापि तथैव राजन्॥ युधामन्युश्चोत्तमौजाश्च शूरौ पृष्ठतो मां रक्षतां राजपुत्रौ।
śaineyo me sātyakiścakrarakṣau dhṛṣṭadyumnaścāpi tathaiva rājan|| yudhāmanyuścottamaujāśca śūrau pṛṣṭhato māṃ rakṣatāṃ rājaputrau|
O king, let Srini's grandson, Satyaki and Dhristadyumna guard my two wings. Let the heroic princes Yudhamanyu and Uttamaujas protect my rear.

रथप्रवीरेण महानुभाव द्विषत्सैन्ये वर्तता दुस्तरेण॥ समेत्याहं सूतपुत्रेण संख्ये वृत्रेण वज्रीव नरेन्द्रमुख्या मस्मिन् संग्रामे यदि वै दृश्यतेऽद्य॥
rathapravīreṇa mahānubhāva dviṣatsainye vartatā dustareṇa|| sametyāhaṃ sūtaputreṇa saṃkhye vṛtreṇa vajrīva narendramukhyā masmin saṃgrāme yadi vai dṛśyate'dya||
O illustrious and most mighty king, as Shakra encountered Vitra, I shall today fight with Suta's son, that heroic and invincible carwarrior, if he can be found in this battle.

आयाहि पश्याद्य युयुत्समानं मां सूतपुत्रस्य रणे जयाय। महोरगस्येव मुखं प्रपन्नाः प्रभद्रकाः कर्णमभिद्रवन्ति॥
āyāhi paśyādya yuyutsamānaṃ māṃ sūtaputrasya raṇe jayāya| mahoragasyeva mukhaṃ prapannāḥ prabhadrakāḥ karṇamabhidravanti||
Come and see us fight with each other in battle for victory. Like persons facing a powerful bull the Prabhadrakas are charging upon Karna.

षट्साहना भारत राजपुत्राः स्वर्गाय लोकाय रणे निमग्नाः। कर्ण न चेदद्य निहन्मि राजन् सबान्धवं युध्यमानं प्रसह्य॥ प्रतिश्रुत्याकुर्वतो वै गतिर्या कष्टा याता तामहं राजसिंह।
ṣaṭsāhanā bhārata rājaputrāḥ svargāya lokāya raṇe nimagnāḥ| karṇa na cedadya nihanmi rājan sabāndhavaṃ yudhyamānaṃ prasahya|| pratiśrutyākurvato vai gatiryā kaṣṭā yātā tāmahaṃ rājasiṃha|
Six thousands of kings are giving their lives for heaven. If however, O king, displaying all my strength I do not kill Karna with is allies in battle, I shall be doomed, O lion among kings to the curse which falls to the lot of one who promises a thing and does not redeem it.

आमन्त्रये त्वां ब्रूहि जयं रणे मे पुरा भीमं धार्तराष्ट्रा ग्रसन्ते॥ सौति हनिष्यामि नरेन्द्रसिंह सैन्यं तथा शत्रुगणांश्च सर्वान्॥
āmantraye tvāṃ brūhi jayaṃ raṇe me purā bhīmaṃ dhārtarāṣṭrā grasante|| sauti haniṣyāmi narendrasiṃha sainyaṃ tathā śatrugaṇāṃśca sarvān||
I seek your blessing, O king, do say that victory will be mine' There the sons of Dhritarashtra are about to devour Bhima, I will slay Karna and his men and all our enemies.
