वैशम्पायन उवाच हतेषु सर्वसैन्येषु सौप्तिके तै स्थैस्त्रिभिः। शोचन् युधिष्ठिरो राजा दाशार्हमिदब्रवीत्॥ कथं नु कृष्ण पापेन क्षुद्रेणाकृतकर्मणा। द्रौणिना निहताः सर्वे मम पुत्रा महारथाः॥

vaiśampāyana uvāca hateṣu sarvasainyeṣu sauptike tai sthaistribhiḥ| śocan yudhiṣṭhiro rājā dāśārhamidabravīt|| kathaṃ nu kṛṣṇa pāpena kṣudreṇākṛtakarmaṇā| drauṇinā nihatāḥ sarve mama putrā mahārathāḥ||

Vaishampayana said "After all the soldiers had been killed during the hour of sleep by those three carwarriors, king Yudhishthira sorrowfully said to Krishna:-'How, O Krishna, could my sons, all of whom were great car-warriors, be killed by the sinful and wretched Ashvatthaman who is not an expert in battle?

तथा कृतास्त्रविक्रान्तः सहस्त्रशतयोधिनः। द्रुपदस्यात्मजाश्चैव द्रोणपुत्रेण पातिताः॥

tathā kṛtāstravikrāntaḥ sahastraśatayodhinaḥ| drupadasyātmajāścaiva droṇaputreṇa pātitāḥ||

How also could Drona's son kill the children of Drupada, all of whom were masters of weapons, powerful and capable of fighting with hundreds of thousands of enemies?

यस्य द्रोणो महेष्वासो न प्रादादाहवे मुखम्। निजघ्ने रथिनां श्रेष्ठं धृष्टद्युम्नं कथं नु सः॥

yasya droṇo maheṣvāso na prādādāhave mukham| nijaghne rathināṃ śreṣṭhaṃ dhṛṣṭadyumnaṃ kathaṃ nu saḥ||

How could he kill that best of car-warriors, viz., Dhrishtadyumna, before whom the great bowman Drona himself could not appear?

किं नु तेन कृतं कर्म तथायुक्तं नरर्षभ। यदेकः समरे सर्वानवधीनो गुरोः सुतः॥

kiṃ nu tena kṛtaṃ karma tathāyuktaṃ nararṣabha| yadekaḥ samare sarvānavadhīno guroḥ sutaḥ||

What act was done by the preceptor' son, O foremost of men, for which he succeeded in killing, single-headed, all our men in battle?'

श्रीभगवानुवाच नूनं स देवदेवानामीश्वरेश्वरमव्ययम्। जगाम शरणं द्रौणिरेकस्तेनावधीद् बहून्॥

śrībhagavānuvāca nūnaṃ sa devadevānāmīśvareśvaramavyayam| jagāma śaraṇaṃ drauṇirekastenāvadhīd bahūn||

Krishna said Drona's son had sought the help of that highest of all the gods, the eternal Mahadeva! For this he could kill single-handed, so large a number of warriors,

प्रसन्नो हि महादेवो दद्यादमरतामपि। वीर्यं च गिरिशो दद्याद् येनेन्द्रमपि शातयेत्॥

prasanno hi mahādevo dadyādamaratāmapi| vīryaṃ ca giriśo dadyād yenendramapi śātayet||

If Mahadeva is pleased he can grant even immortality! Girisha can give such courage as will succeed in checking Indra himself.

वेदाहं हि महादेवं तत्त्वेन भरतर्षभ। यानि चास्य पुराणानि कर्माणि विविधानि च॥

vedāhaṃ hi mahādevaṃ tattvena bharatarṣabha| yāni cāsya purāṇāni karmāṇi vividhāni ca||

I know Mahadeva truly, foremost of Bharata's race! I know also his various former deeds.

आदिरेष हि भूतानां मध्यमन्तश्च भारत। विचेष्टते जगच्चेदं सर्वमस्यैव कर्मणा॥

ādireṣa hi bhūtānāṃ madhyamantaśca bhārata| viceṣṭate jagaccedaṃ sarvamasyaiva karmaṇā||

He, is the beginning, the middle, and the end of all creatures! This universe acts and moves through his power.

एवं सिसृक्षुर्भूतानि ददर्श प्रथमं विभुः। पितामहोऽब्रवीच्चैनं भूतानि सृज मा चिरम्॥ हरिकेशस्तथेत्युक्त्वा भूतानां दोषदर्शिवान्। दीर्घकालं तपस्तेपे मग्नोऽम्भसि महातपाः॥

evaṃ sisṛkṣurbhūtāni dadarśa prathamaṃ vibhuḥ| pitāmaho'bravīccainaṃ bhūtāni sṛja mā ciram|| harikeśastathetyuktvā bhūtānāṃ doṣadarśivān| dīrghakālaṃ tapastepe magno'mbhasi mahātapāḥ||

The powerful Grandfather, desirous of creating living animals saw Rudra; and the Grandfather asked him, saying,-Create living creatures immediately.—Thus addressed the twany haired Rudra said,-So be it!-and plunged himself into the water and practised austerities for a long time, because he was sensible of the defects of living creatures.

सुमहान्तं ततः कालं प्रतीक्ष्यैनं पितामहः। स्रष्टारं सर्वभूतानां ससर्ज मनसा परम्॥

sumahāntaṃ tataḥ kālaṃ pratīkṣyainaṃ pitāmahaḥ| sraṣṭāraṃ sarvabhūtānāṃ sasarja manasā param||

Having waited for Rudra for a very long time, the Grandfather by his willpower called into being another living being for the purpose of propagating his species.

सोऽब्रवीत् पितरं दृष्ट्वा गिरिशं सुप्तमम्भसि। यदि मे नाग्रजोऽस्त्यन्यस्तत: स्रक्ष्याम्यहं प्रजाः॥

so'bravīt pitaraṃ dṛṣṭvā giriśaṃ suptamambhasi| yadi me nāgrajo'styanyastata: srakṣyāmyahaṃ prajāḥ||

Seeing Girisha plunged into the water, this (second) being, said to his father,-If there be no other being born before me, then I shall multiply my self.

तमब्रवीत् पिता नास्ति त्वदन्यः पुरुषोऽग्रजः। स्थाणुरेष जले मग्नो विस्रब्धः कुरु वैकृतम्॥

tamabravīt pitā nāsti tvadanyaḥ puruṣo'grajaḥ| sthāṇureṣa jale magno visrabdhaḥ kuru vaikṛtam||

His father replied, saying,—There is no other born before you! Shiva has pledged himself into the water! Go and create living creatures, without any fear.

भूतान्यन्वसृजत् सप्त दक्षादींस्तु प्रजापतीन्। यैरिमं व्यकरोत् सर्वं भूतग्रामं चतुर्विधम्॥

bhūtānyanvasṛjat sapta dakṣādīṃstu prajāpatīn| yairimaṃ vyakarot sarvaṃ bhūtagrāmaṃ caturvidham||

He then created many living creatures, having Daksha for their first, who created all those four-fold creatures.

ताः सृष्टमात्राः क्षुधिताः प्रजाः सर्वाः प्रजापतिम्। बिभक्षयिषवो राजन् सहसा प्राद्रवंस्तदा॥

tāḥ sṛṣṭamātrāḥ kṣudhitāḥ prajāḥ sarvāḥ prajāpatim| bibhakṣayiṣavo rājan sahasā prādravaṃstadā||

As soon, as they were born, they ran, O king, towards their father,. stricken with hunger and desirous of eating him up.

स भक्ष्यमाणस्त्राणार्थी पितामहमुपाद्रवत्। आभ्यो मां भगवांस्त्रातु वृत्तिरासां विधीयताम्॥

sa bhakṣyamāṇastrāṇārthī pitāmahamupādravat| ābhyo māṃ bhagavāṃstrātu vṛttirāsāṃ vidhīyatām||

The second being whom Brahman had created, thereupon ran towards him, seeking protection from his own offspring. And he said to the Grandfather,-Oillustrious one, save me from these, and let these creatures have their food.

ततस्ताभ्यो ददावन्नमोषधी: स्थावराणि च। जङ्गमानि च भूतानि दुर्बलानि बलीयसाम्॥

tatastābhyo dadāvannamoṣadhī: sthāvarāṇi ca| jaṅgamāni ca bhūtāni durbalāni balīyasām||

Then the Grandfather gave herbs and plants and other vegetables as their food, and assigned for the strong the weaker creatures as their food.

विहितान्नाः प्रजास्तास्तु जग्मुः सृष्टा यथागतम्। ततो ववृधिरे राजन् प्रीतिमत्यः स्वयोनिषु॥

vihitānnāḥ prajāstāstu jagmuḥ sṛṣṭā yathāgatam| tato vavṛdhire rājan prītimatyaḥ svayoniṣu||

Their means of sustenance having been thus settled the newly created creatures all went away where they liked, and cheerfully multiplied their respective species.

भूतग्रामे विवृद्धे तु तुष्टे लोकगुरावपि। उदतिष्ठज्जलाज्ज्येष्ठः प्रजाश्चेमा ददर्श सः॥

bhūtagrāme vivṛddhe tu tuṣṭe lokagurāvapi| udatiṣṭhajjalājjyeṣṭhaḥ prajāścemā dadarśa saḥ||

After the creatures had multiplied and Brahma had become well gratified, the firstborn rose from water and saw the living creation.

बहुरूपाः प्रजाः सृष्टा विवृद्धाश्च स्वतेजसा। चुक्रोध भगवान् रुद्रो लिङ्गं स्वं चाप्यविध्यत॥ तत् प्रविद्धं तथा भूमौ तथैव प्रत्यतिष्ठत। तमुवाचाव्ययो ब्रह्मा वचोभिः शमयन्निव॥ किं कृतं सलिले शर्व चिरकालस्थितेन ते। किमर्थं चेदमुत्पाद्य लिङ्गं भूमौ प्रवेशितम्॥

bahurūpāḥ prajāḥ sṛṣṭā vivṛddhāśca svatejasā| cukrodha bhagavān rudro liṅgaṃ svaṃ cāpyavidhyata|| tat praviddhaṃ tathā bhūmau tathaiva pratyatiṣṭhata| tamuvācāvyayo brahmā vacobhiḥ śamayanniva|| kiṃ kṛtaṃ salile śarva cirakālasthitena te| kimarthaṃ cedamutpādya liṅgaṃ bhūmau praveśitam||

He saw that various kinds of creatures had been created and that they had multiplied themselves. Seeing it, Rudra became angry and made his generative organ disappear in the bowels of the Earth. Then soothing him by soft words, Brahman said to him-O Sarva, what were you doing so long within the water? Why have you made your generative organ disappear in the bowels of the Earth?

सोऽब्रवीजाजसंरम्भस्तथा लोकगुरुर्गुरुम्। प्रजाः सृष्टाः परेणेमाः किं करिष्याम्यनेन वै॥

so'bravījājasaṃrambhastathā lokagururgurum| prajāḥ sṛṣṭāḥ pareṇemāḥ kiṃ kariṣyāmyanena vai||

Thus accosted, that lord of the universe angrily answered the lord Brahman,Somebody else has created all these creatures. What purpose then would be fulfilled by this organ of mine.

तपसाधिगतं चान्नं प्रजार्थं मे पितामह। ओषध्यः परिवर्तेरन् यथैवं सततं प्रजाः॥

tapasādhigataṃ cānnaṃ prajārthaṃ me pitāmaha| oṣadhyaḥ parivarteran yathaivaṃ satataṃ prajāḥ||

I have, by my active penances, O Grandfather, created all these creatures. These herbs and plants also will multiply like those that will live upon them.

एवमुक्त्वा स सक्रोधो जगाम विमना भवः। गिरेर्मुञ्जवतः पादं तपस्तप्तुं महातपाः॥

evamuktvā sa sakrodho jagāma vimanā bhavaḥ| girermuñjavataḥ pādaṃ tapastaptuṃ mahātapāḥ||

Saying so, Bhava went away, dispirited and angry, to the foot of the Munjavat mountains for practising austere penances.”
