संजय उवाच तस्मिन् युद्धे महाराज सुसंवृत्ते सुदारुणे। उपविष्टेषु सर्वेषु पाण्डवेषु महात्मसु॥ ततस्तालध्वजो रामस्तयोर्युद्ध उपस्थिते। श्रुत्वा तच्छिष्ययो राजन्नाजगाम हलायुधः॥
saṃjaya uvāca tasmin yuddhe mahārāja susaṃvṛtte sudāruṇe| upaviṣṭeṣu sarveṣu pāṇḍaveṣu mahātmasu|| tatastāladhvajo rāmastayoryuddha upasthite| śrutvā tacchiṣyayo rājannājagāma halāyudhaḥ||
Sanjaya said When that fierce encounter O king, was about to take place and when all the great Pandavas had taken their seats indeed, having heard that a battle, between those two heroes, both of whom were his disciples, was about to begin, Rama, whose banner bore the emblem of the palmyra palm and who had the plough for his weapon, came there.

तं दृष्ट्वा परमप्रीताः पाण्डवाः सहकेशवाः। उपगम्योपसंगृह्य विधिवत् प्रत्यपूजयन्॥
taṃ dṛṣṭvā paramaprītāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ sahakeśavāḥ| upagamyopasaṃgṛhya vidhivat pratyapūjayan||
Seeing him, the Pandavas, with Keshava, filled with joy, advanced towards himn and receiving him adored him properly.

पूजयित्वा ततः पश्चादिदं वचनमब्रुवन्। शिष्ययोः कौशलं युद्धे पश्य रामेति पार्थिव॥
pūjayitvā tataḥ paścādidaṃ vacanamabruvan| śiṣyayoḥ kauśalaṃ yuddhe paśya rāmeti pārthiva||
After adoring him, they then, O king said to him these words-"Witness, O Rama, the skill in battle of your two disciples.”

अब्रवीच तदा रामो दृष्ट्वा कृष्णं सपाण्डवम्। दुर्योधनं च कौरव्यं गदापाणिमवस्थितम्॥ चत्वारिंशदहान्यद्य द्वे च मे निःसृतस्य वै। पुष्येण सम्प्रयातोऽस्मि श्रवणे पुनरागतः॥ शिष्ययोर्वै गदायुद्ध द्रष्टकामोऽस्मि माधव।
abravīca tadā rāmo dṛṣṭvā kṛṣṇaṃ sapāṇḍavam| duryodhanaṃ ca kauravyaṃ gadāpāṇimavasthitam|| catvāriṃśadahānyadya dve ca me niḥsṛtasya vai| puṣyeṇa samprayāto'smi śravaṇe punarāgataḥ|| śiṣyayorvai gadāyuddha draṣṭakāmo'smi mādhava|
Looking at Krishna and the Pandavas and also at Duryodhana of Kuru's race who was standing there armed with mace, Rama then said-"Two and forty days have passed since I left home. I had set out under the constellation Pushya and have come back under Shravana. I am desirous, O Madhava, of witnessing this encounter with the mace between these two disciples of mine."

ततस्तदा गदाहस्तौ दुर्योधनवृकोदरौ॥ युद्धभूमिं गतौ वीरावुभावेव रराजतुः।
tatastadā gadāhastau duryodhanavṛkodarau|| yuddhabhūmiṃ gatau vīrāvubhāveva rarājatuḥ|
At that time the two heroes, viz., Duryodhana and Vrikodara, shone effulgent on the field, both armed with maces.

ततो युधिष्ठिरो राजा परिष्वज्य हलायुधम्॥ स्वागतं कुशलं चास्मै पर्यपृच्छद यथातथम्।
tato yudhiṣṭhiro rājā pariṣvajya halāyudham|| svāgataṃ kuśalaṃ cāsmai paryapṛcchada yathātatham|
Embracing him who had the plough for his weapon, king Yudhishthira, duly enquired about his welfare and welcomed him.

कृष्णौ चापि महेष्वासावभिवाद्य हलायुधम्॥ सस्वजाते परिप्रीतौ प्रीयमाणौ यशस्विनौ।
kṛṣṇau cāpi maheṣvāsāvabhivādya halāyudham|| sasvajāte pariprītau prīyamāṇau yaśasvinau|
Those great bowmen, viz., viz., the illustrious Krishnas, filled with joy, cheerfully saluted the hero who had the plough for his weapon and embraced him.

माद्रीपुत्रो तथा शूरौ द्रौपद्याः पञ्च चात्मजाः॥ अभिवाद्य स्थिता राजन् रौहिणेयं महाबलम्।
mādrīputro tathā śūrau draupadyāḥ pañca cātmajāḥ|| abhivādya sthitā rājan rauhiṇeyaṃ mahābalam|
Similarly the two sons of Madri and the five sons of Draupadi saluted Rohini's powerful son and stood at a respectful distance.

भीमसेनोऽथ बलवान् पुत्रस्तव जनाधिप।॥ तथैव चोद्यतगदौ पूजयामासर्तुबलम्।
bhīmaseno'tha balavān putrastava janādhipa||| tathaiva codyatagadau pūjayāmāsartubalam|
Bhimasena of great strength and your son, O monarch, both with uplifted maces in their arms, adored Baladeva.

स्वागतेन च ते तत्र प्रतिपूज्य समन्ततः॥ पश्य युद्धं महाबाहो इति ते राममब्रुवन्। एवमूचुर्महात्मानं रौहिणेयं नराधिपाः॥
svāgatena ca te tatra pratipūjya samantataḥ|| paśya yuddhaṃ mahābāho iti te rāmamabruvan| evamūcurmahātmānaṃ rauhiṇeyaṃ narādhipāḥ||
The other kings honored him by welcoming him and then all of them said to Rama "Witness this encounter, O you of mighty arms.”—Even thus those mighty car-warriors said to the high-souled son of Rohini.

परिष्वज्य तदा रामः पाण्डवान् सहसृञ्जयान्। अपृच्छत् कुशलं पार्थिवांश्चामितौजसः॥ तथैव ते समासाद्य पप्रच्छुस्तमनामयम्।
pariṣvajya tadā rāmaḥ pāṇḍavān sahasṛñjayān| apṛcchat kuśalaṃ pārthivāṃścāmitaujasaḥ|| tathaiva te samāsādya papracchustamanāmayam|
The highly energetic Rama, having embraced the Pandavas and the Srinjayas, enquired after the welfare of all the other kings. Likewise all of them, approaching him, enquired after his welfare.

प्रत्यभ्यर्च्य हली सर्वान् क्षत्रियांश्च महात्मनः॥ कृत्वा कुशलसंयुक्तां संविदं च यथावयः। जनार्दनं सात्यकिं च प्रेम्णा स परिषस्वजे॥ मूर्ध्नि चैतावुपानाया कुशलं पर्यपृच्छत।
pratyabhyarcya halī sarvān kṣatriyāṃśca mahātmanaḥ|| kṛtvā kuśalasaṃyuktāṃ saṃvidaṃ ca yathāvayaḥ| janārdanaṃ sātyakiṃ ca premṇā sa pariṣasvaje|| mūrdhni caitāvupānāyā kuśalaṃ paryapṛcchata|
Having in return saluted all the great Kshatriyas and having made courteous inquiries about 'each according to their age, that heroe affectionately embraced Janarddana and Satyaki. Smelling their heads, he enquired after their welfare.

तौ च तं विधिवद् राजन् पूज्यामासतुर्गुरुम्॥ ब्रह्मामिव देवेशमिन्द्रोपेन्द्रौ मुदान्वितौ।
tau ca taṃ vidhivad rājan pūjyāmāsaturgurum|| brahmāmiva deveśamindropendrau mudānvitau|
Those two in return, O king, duly adored him, their superior, with great pleasure, like Indra and Upendra adoring Brahma the king of the celestials.

ततोऽब्रवीद् धर्मसुतो रौहिणेयमरिंदमम्॥ इदं भ्रात्रोर्महायुद्धं पश्य रामेति भारत।
tato'bravīd dharmasuto rauhiṇeyamariṃdamam|| idaṃ bhrātrormahāyuddhaṃ paśya rāmeti bhārata|
Then Dharma's son, O Bharata, said to that chastiser of foes, viz., the son of Rohini "Witness, O Rama, this dreadful encounter between the two brothers."

तेषां मध्ये महाबाहुः श्रीमान् केशवपूर्वजः॥ व्यविशत् परमप्रीतः पूज्यमानो महारथैः।
teṣāṃ madhye mahābāhuḥ śrīmān keśavapūrvajaḥ|| vyaviśat paramaprītaḥ pūjyamāno mahārathaiḥ|
Thus adored by those great car-warriors, the mighty-armed elder brother of Keshava, of great beauty, took his seat amongst them.

स बभौ राजमध्यस्थो नीलवासाः सितप्रभः॥ दिवीव नक्षत्रगणैः परिकीर्णो निशाकरः।
sa babhau rājamadhyastho nīlavāsāḥ sitaprabhaḥ|| divīva nakṣatragaṇaiḥ parikīrṇo niśākaraḥ|
Clad in blue robes and possessed of a fair complexion, Rama, as he sat midst those kings shone like the Moon in the sky encircled by a number of stars.

ततस्तयोः संनिपातस्तुमुलो लोमहर्षणः॥ आसीदन्तकारो राजन् वैरस्य तव पुत्रयोः॥
tatastayoḥ saṃnipātastumulo lomaharṣaṇaḥ|| āsīdantakāro rājan vairasya tava putrayoḥ||
Then that dreadful and hair-standing encounter took place between those two sons of yours O king, for terminating the long standing feud.
