MBh 5 21.1

संजय उवाच ततो युधिष्ठिरो द्रोणं दृष्ट्वाऽन्तिकमुपागतम्। महता शरवर्षेण प्रत्यगृह्णादभीतवत्॥

saṃjaya uvāca tato yudhiṣṭhiro droṇaṃ dṛṣṭvā'ntikamupāgatam| mahatā śaravarṣeṇa pratyagṛhṇādabhītavat||

Sanjaya said Seeing Yudhishthira approach him, Drona received him with a continuous downpour of arrows, like one undaunted.

ततो हलहलाशब्द आसीद् यौधिष्ठिरे बले। जिघृक्षपि महासिंहे गजालामिव यूथपम्॥

tato halahalāśabda āsīd yaudhiṣṭhire bale| jighṛkṣapi mahāsiṃhe gajālāmiva yūthapam||

Thereupon a very great confusion arose in the army of Yudhishthira which resembled that which prevails in a herd of elephants when the leader is attacked by a lion.

दृष्ट्वा द्रोणं ततः शूरः सत्यजित् सत्यविक्रमः। युधिष्ठिरमभिप्रेप्सुराचार्यं समुपाद्रवत्॥

dṛṣṭvā droṇaṃ tataḥ śūraḥ satyajit satyavikramaḥ| yudhiṣṭhiramabhiprepsurācāryaṃ samupādravat||

Then the heroic Satyajit of prowess invincible, beholding Drona thc preceptor desirous of capturing Yudhishthira, rushed at him with fury.

तत आचार्यपाञ्चाल्यौ युयुधाते महाबलौ। विक्षोभयन्तौ तत् सैन्यमिन्द्रवैरोचनाविव॥

tata ācāryapāñcālyau yuyudhāte mahābalau| vikṣobhayantau tat sainyamindravairocanāviva||

Then the war-like Acharya and the prince of the Panchalas fought with one another, agitating the armies hostile to each, like Indra and the son of Virochana.

ततो द्रोणं महेष्वासः सत्यजित् सत्यविक्रमः। अविध्यन्निशिताग्रेण परमास्त्रं विदर्शयन्॥

tato droṇaṃ maheṣvāsaḥ satyajit satyavikramaḥ| avidhyanniśitāgreṇa paramāstraṃ vidarśayan||

Then the mighty warrior Satyajit of prowess invincible, displaying excellent weapons, pierced Drona with a keen-pointed shaft.

तथास्य सारथेः पञ्च शरान् सर्पविषोपमान्। अमुञ्चदन्तकप्रख्यान् सम्मुमोहास्य सारथिः ॥

tathāsya sāratheḥ pañca śarān sarpaviṣopamān| amuñcadantakaprakhyān sammumohāsya sārathiḥ ||

Thereafter he discharged at the charioteers of Drona, five arrows deadly as the venom of snakes and each resembling Death himself. (Struck by those arrows) the charioteer lost all consciousness.

अथास्य सहसाविध्यद्धयान् दशभिराशुगैः। दशभिर्दशभिः क्रुद्ध उभौ च पार्ष्णिसारथी॥

athāsya sahasāvidhyaddhayān daśabhirāśugaiḥ| daśabhirdaśabhiḥ kruddha ubhau ca pārṣṇisārathī||

Then he suddenly pierced Drona's horses with ten swift-going-arrows. Thereafter wrought up with ire, he pierced the two Parshni-drivers of Drona with ten shafts each.

मण्डलं तु समावृत्य विचरन् पृतनामुखे। ध्वजं चिच्छेद च क्रुद्धो द्रोणस्यामित्रकर्षणः॥

maṇḍalaṃ tu samāvṛtya vicaran pṛtanāmukhe| dhvajaṃ ciccheda ca kruddho droṇasyāmitrakarṣaṇaḥ||

Then at the head of his division he wheeled in circular motion riding on his chariot. Then filled with rage he cut down the flag-staff of Drona, the grinder of foes.

द्रोणस्तु तत् समालोक्य चरितं तस्य संयुगे। मनसा चिन्तयामास प्राप्तकालमरिंदमः॥

droṇastu tat samālokya caritaṃ tasya saṃyuge| manasā cintayāmāsa prāptakālamariṃdamaḥ||

Then that crusher of foes, Drona, seeing these feats of his enemy in battle, thought in his mind that his (foe's) hour was come.

ततः सत्यजितं तीक्ष्णैर्दशभिर्मर्मभेदिभिः। अविध्यच्छीघ्रमाचार्यश्छित्त्वास्य सशरं धनुः॥

tataḥ satyajitaṃ tīkṣṇairdaśabhirmarmabhedibhiḥ| avidhyacchīghramācāryaśchittvāsya saśaraṃ dhanuḥ||

Then having severed the bow of his enemy Satyajit along with arrows placed on it, the preceptor Drona pierced him with ten whetted shafts capable of penetrating to the very vitals.

स शीघ्रतरमादाय धनुरन्यत् प्रतापवान्। द्रोणमभ्यहनद् राजंस्त्रिशता कङ्कपत्रिभिः॥

sa śīghrataramādāya dhanuranyat pratāpavān| droṇamabhyahanad rājaṃstriśatā kaṅkapatribhiḥ||

Thereupon that puissant hero (Satyajit), O monarch, having speedily grasped another bow, struck Drona with thirty arrows furnished with Kanka-feathers.

दृष्ट्वा सत्यजिता द्रोणं ग्रस्यमानमिवाहवे। वृकः शरशतैस्तीक्ष्णैः पाञ्चाल्यो द्रोणमार्दयत्॥

dṛṣṭvā satyajitā droṇaṃ grasyamānamivāhave| vṛkaḥ śaraśataistīkṣṇaiḥ pāñcālyo droṇamārdayat||

When the great warrior Vrika saw Satyajit badly gripped within the ambit of arrows shot by Dronacharya, he shot several hundred acute arrows and injured severally Dronacharya.

संछाद्यमानं समरे द्रोणं दृष्ट्वा महारथम्। चुक्रुशुः पाण्डवा राजन वस्त्रााणि दुधुवुश्च ह॥

saṃchādyamānaṃ samare droṇaṃ dṛṣṭvā mahāratham| cukruśuḥ pāṇḍavā rājana vastrāāṇi dudhuvuśca ha||

Beholding Drona thus resisted in that battle by Satyajit, O monarch, the Pandavas shouted forth and waived their garments.

वृकस्तु परमकुद्धो द्रोणं षष्ट्या स्तनान्तरे। विव्याध बलवान् राजेस्तदद्भुतभिवाभवत्॥

vṛkastu paramakuddho droṇaṃ ṣaṣṭyā stanāntare| vivyādha balavān rājestadadbhutabhivābhavat||

Inflamed with wrath, the mighty Vrika pierced Drona on the chest with sixty shafts. O king, that feat appeared, indeed, marvellous.

द्रोणस्तु शरवर्षेण च्छाद्यमानो महारथः। वेगं चक्रे महावेगः क्रोधादुहृत्य चक्षुषी॥

droṇastu śaravarṣeṇa cchādyamāno mahārathaḥ| vegaṃ cakre mahāvegaḥ krodhāduhṛtya cakṣuṣī||

Then that mighty car-warrior Drona endued with great speed, being completely covered by an arrowy downpour, put forth all his energy causing his eyes to expand with rage.

ततः सत्यजितश्चापं छित्वा द्रोणोवृकस्य च। षभिः ससूतं सहयंशरैर्दोणोऽवधीद् वृकम्॥

tataḥ satyajitaścāpaṃ chitvā droṇovṛkasya ca| ṣabhiḥ sasūtaṃ sahayaṃśarairdoṇo'vadhīd vṛkam||

Thereafter Drona, having cut asunder the bows of Satyajit and Vrika, killed the latter along with his driver and horses, with six shafts.

अथान्यद् धनुरादाय सत्यजित् वेगवत्तरम्। साश्वं ससूतं विशिखैोणं विव्याघ सध्वजम्॥

athānyad dhanurādāya satyajit vegavattaram| sāśvaṃ sasūtaṃ viśikhaioṇaṃ vivyāgha sadhvajam||

Thereafter Satyajit having taken up a bow still tougher, pierced Drona, along with his steeds, drivers and standard, with several shafts.

स तन्न मसृषे द्रोणः पाञ्चाल्येनार्दितो मृधे। ततस्तस्य विनाशाय सत्वरं व्यसृजच्छरान्॥

sa tanna masṛṣe droṇaḥ pāñcālyenārdito mṛdhe| tatastasya vināśāya satvaraṃ vyasṛjaccharān||

Humiliated in battle by the prince of the Pandavas, Drona was no longer able to brook it; then for the destruction of his enemy, he speedily shot shafts at him.

हयान् ध्वजं धनुर्मुष्टिमुभौ च पार्ष्णसारथी। अवाकिरत् ततो द्रोणः शरवर्षेः सहस्रशः॥

hayān dhvajaṃ dhanurmuṣṭimubhau ca pārṣṇasārathī| avākirat tato droṇaḥ śaravarṣeḥ sahasraśaḥ||

Then pouring arrows by thousands, Drona covered the steeds, the standards, the handle of the bow and the two Parshni drivers of his enemy.

MBh 5 21.20

तथा संछिद्यमानेषु कार्मुकेषु पुनः पुनः। पाञ्चाल्यः परमास्त्रज्ञः शोणाश्वं समयोधयत्॥

tathā saṃchidyamāneṣu kārmukeṣu punaḥ punaḥ| pāñcālyaḥ paramāstrajñaḥ śoṇāśvaṃ samayodhayat||

Inspite of his bows being thus repeatedly cut-off, the prince of the Panchalas conversant with the knowledge of excellent weapons, continued to fight with him of the chestnut steeds (Drona).

स सत्यजितमालोक्य तथोदीर्णे महाहवे। अर्धचन्द्रेण चिच्छेद शिरस्तस्य महात्मनः॥

sa satyajitamālokya tathodīrṇe mahāhave| ardhacandreṇa ciccheda śirastasya mahātmanaḥ||

Then beholding Satyajit swell with energy in that battle, Drona with a half-moon shaped arrow, severed the head of that one of illustrious soul.

MBh 5 21.22

तस्मिन् हते महामात्रे पञ्चालानां महारथे। अपायाज्जवनैरश्वैर्दोणात् त्रस्तो युधिष्ठिरः॥

tasmin hate mahāmātre pañcālānāṃ mahārathe| apāyājjavanairaśvairdoṇāt trasto yudhiṣṭhiraḥ||

When that mighty car-warrior the leader of the Panchalas was slain, Yudhishthira being afraid of Drona, fled away, being borne by fleet steeds.

पञ्चालाः केकया मत्स्या चेदिकारूषकोसलाः। युधिष्ठिरमभीप्सन्तो दृष्ट्वा द्रोणमुपाद्रवन्॥

pañcālāḥ kekayā matsyā cedikārūṣakosalāḥ| yudhiṣṭhiramabhīpsanto dṛṣṭvā droṇamupādravan||

The Panchalas, the Kckayas, the Matsyas, the Chedikas, the Karuasas and the Koshalas, desirous of rescuing Yudhishthira, rushed at Drona with delight.

ततो युधिष्ठिरं प्रेप्सुराचार्यः शत्रुपूगहा। व्यधमत् तान्यनीकानि तूलराशिमिवानलः॥

tato yudhiṣṭhiraṃ prepsurācāryaḥ śatrupūgahā| vyadhamat tānyanīkāni tūlarāśimivānalaḥ||

Thereupon, the preceptor, the crusher of large bodies of foes, desirous of capturing Yudhishthira, consumed those troops like fire consuming heaps of cotton.

निर्दहन्तमनीकानि तानि तानि पुनः पुनः। द्रोणं मत्स्यादवरजः शतानीकोऽभ्यवर्तत॥

nirdahantamanīkāni tāni tāni punaḥ punaḥ| droṇaṃ matsyādavarajaḥ śatānīko'bhyavartata||

Then Shatanika the younger brother of the king of the Matsyas, seeing Drona repeatedly consumne the divisions, rushed at him.

सूर्यरश्मिप्रतीकाशैः कर्मारपरिमार्जितैः। षड्भिः ससूतं सहयं द्रोणं विद्ध्वानदद् भृशम्॥

sūryaraśmipratīkāśaiḥ karmāraparimārjitaiḥ| ṣaḍbhiḥ sasūtaṃ sahayaṃ droṇaṃ viddhvānadad bhṛśam||

Then deeply piercing Drona and his charioteer and steeds, with six shafts effulgent like the rays of the sun and polished by the forgers, Shatanika uttered loud shouts.

क्रूराय कर्मणे युक्तश्चिकीर्षुः कर्म दुष्करम्। अवाकिरच्छरशतैर्भारद्वाजं महारथम्॥

krūrāya karmaṇe yuktaścikīrṣuḥ karma duṣkaram| avākiraccharaśatairbhāradvājaṃ mahāratham||

Engaged in a heartless act and attempting to accomplish a difficult one, he covered the mighty car-warrior the son of Bharadvaja, with an arrowy down-pour.

तस्य चानदतो द्रोणः शिरः कायात् सकुण्डलम्। क्षुरेणापाहरत् तूर्णं ततो मत्स्याः प्रदुद्रुवुः॥

tasya cānadato droṇaḥ śiraḥ kāyāt sakuṇḍalam| kṣureṇāpāharat tūrṇaṃ tato matsyāḥ pradudruvuḥ||

Then Drona, with a shaft like a razor speedily severed from his trunk, the head graced with ear-rings, of Shatanika thus roaring at him. Thereat all the Matsyas took to their heels.

MBh 5 21.29

मत्स्याञ्जित्वाऽजयच्चेदीन् करूषान् केकयानपि। पञ्चालान् सृञ्जयान् पाण्डून् भारद्वाजः पुनः पुनः॥२९

matsyāñjitvā'jayaccedīn karūṣān kekayānapi| pañcālān sṛñjayān pāṇḍūn bhāradvājaḥ punaḥ punaḥ||29

Having vanquished the Matsyas, the son of Bharadvaja obtained victory over the Chedis, the Karusas, the Kekayas, the Panchalas, the Srinjayas and the Pandus.

तं दहन्तमनीकानि क्रुद्धमग्निं यथा वनम्। दृष्ट्वा रुक्मरथं वीरं समकम्पन्त सुंजयाः॥

taṃ dahantamanīkāni kruddhamagniṃ yathā vanam| dṛṣṭvā rukmarathaṃ vīraṃ samakampanta suṃjayāḥ||

Beholding that one of the golden car, endued with bravery, excited with wrath, consume their divisions like fire burning down a forest, the Srinjayas trembled.

उत्तमं ह्याददानस्य धनुरस्याशुकारिणः। ज्याघोषो निघ्नतोऽमित्रान् दिक्षु सर्वासु शुश्रुवे॥

uttamaṃ hyādadānasya dhanurasyāśukāriṇaḥ| jyāghoṣo nighnato'mitrān dikṣu sarvāsu śuśruve||

The twang of the bowstring of that one of great activity was heard in all directions when he stretched his bow to slay his enemies.

नागानश्वान् पदातींश्च रथिनो गजसादिनः। रौद्रा हस्तवता मुक्ताः प्रमथ्नन्ति स्म सायकाः॥

nāgānaśvān padātīṃśca rathino gajasādinaḥ| raudrā hastavatā muktāḥ pramathnanti sma sāyakāḥ||

Fierce arrows, discharged by that one endued with great lightness of hands, crushed elephants and steeds and foot-soldiers, carwarriors and warriors riding on elephants.

नानद्यमानः पर्जन्यो मिश्रवातो हिमात्यये। अश्मवर्षमिवावर्षत् परेषां भयमादधत्॥

nānadyamānaḥ parjanyo miśravāto himātyaye| aśmavarṣamivāvarṣat pareṣāṃ bhayamādadhat||

As at the expiration of the winter, mighty masses of thundering rain-clouds assisted by violent winds, pour down showers of rain, so Drona pouring showers of arrows, struck terror into the hearts of his opponents.

सर्वा दिशः समचरत् सैन्यं विक्षोभयनिव। बली शूरो महेष्वासो मित्राणामभयंकरः॥

sarvā diśaḥ samacarat sainyaṃ vikṣobhayaniva| balī śūro maheṣvāso mitrāṇāmabhayaṃkaraḥ||

That puissant hero, that mighty warrior, that giver of assurances of safety to his friends, traversed in all directions, agitating the host of the enemy. seen

तस्य विद्युदिवानेषु चापं हेमपरिष्कृतम्। दिक्षु सर्वासु पश्यामो द्रोणस्यामिततेजसः॥

tasya vidyudivāneṣu cāpaṃ hemapariṣkṛtam| dikṣu sarvāsu paśyāmo droṇasyāmitatejasaḥ||

The bow of golden effulgence of Drona of immeasurable prowess was in all directions like flashes of lightning illumining the clouds.

शोभमानां ध्वजे चास्य वेदीमद्राक्ष्म भारत। हिमवच्छिखराकारां चरतः संयुगे भृशम्॥

śobhamānāṃ dhvaje cāsya vedīmadrākṣma bhārata| himavacchikharākārāṃ carataḥ saṃyuge bhṛśam||

As he careered with speed in that battle, the device of an altar decorating his banner, O Bharata, appeared like the crest of the Himalayas.

द्रोणस्तु पाण्डवानी के चकार कदनं महत्। यथा दैत्यगणे विष्णुः सुरासुरनमस्कृतः॥

droṇastu pāṇḍavānī ke cakāra kadanaṃ mahat| yathā daityagaṇe viṣṇuḥ surāsuranamaskṛtaḥ||

Drona caused a dreadful carnage among the host of the Pandavas, like that which Vishnu the revered of all the celestials and the Asuras, caused among the host of the latter.

स शूरः सत्यवाक् प्राज्ञो बलवान् सत्यविक्रमः। महानुभाव: कल्पान्ते रौद्रां भीरुविभीषणाम्॥ कवचोर्मिध्वजावर्ती मर्त्यकलापहारिणीम्। गजवाजिमहाग्राहामसिमीनां दुरासदाम्॥ वीरास्थिरार्करां रौद्रां भेरीमुरजकच्छपाम्। चर्मवर्मप्लवां धोरां केशशैवलशाद्वलाम्॥ शरौघिणीं धनुःस्रोतां बाहुपन्नगसंकुलाम्। रणभूमिवहां तीव्रां कुरुसृञ्जयवाहिनीम्॥ मनुष्यशीर्षपाषाणां शक्तिमीना गदोडुपाम्। उष्णीषफेनवसनां विकीर्णान्त्रसरीसृपाम्॥ वीरापहारिणीमुग्रां मांसशोणितकर्दमाम्। हस्तिग्राहां केतुवृक्षां क्षत्रियाणां निमज्जनीम्॥ क्रूरां शरीरसंघट्टां सादिनक्रां दुरत्ययाम्। द्रोणः प्रावर्तयत् तत्र नदीमन्तकगामिनीम्॥ क्रव्यादगणसंजुष्टां श्वशृगालगणायुताम्। निशेवितां महारौद्रैः पिशिताशैः समन्ततः॥

sa śūraḥ satyavāk prājño balavān satyavikramaḥ| mahānubhāva: kalpānte raudrāṃ bhīruvibhīṣaṇām|| kavacormidhvajāvartī martyakalāpahāriṇīm| gajavājimahāgrāhāmasimīnāṃ durāsadām|| vīrāsthirārkarāṃ raudrāṃ bherīmurajakacchapām| carmavarmaplavāṃ dhorāṃ keśaśaivalaśādvalām|| śaraughiṇīṃ dhanuḥsrotāṃ bāhupannagasaṃkulām| raṇabhūmivahāṃ tīvrāṃ kurusṛñjayavāhinīm|| manuṣyaśīrṣapāṣāṇāṃ śaktimīnā gadoḍupām| uṣṇīṣaphenavasanāṃ vikīrṇāntrasarīsṛpām|| vīrāpahāriṇīmugrāṃ māṃsaśoṇitakardamām| hastigrāhāṃ ketuvṛkṣāṃ kṣatriyāṇāṃ nimajjanīm|| krūrāṃ śarīrasaṃghaṭṭāṃ sādinakrāṃ duratyayām| droṇaḥ prāvartayat tatra nadīmantakagāminīm|| kravyādagaṇasaṃjuṣṭāṃ śvaśṛgālagaṇāyutām| niśevitāṃ mahāraudraiḥ piśitāśaiḥ samantataḥ||

That hero of truthful speech endowed with great wisdom and strength, end endued with invincible prowess, that Drona of generous heart, created a river on the field of battle, that was dreadful and capable of enhancing the fear of the cowards, Armours constituted its bellows and standards its whirlpools; and it carried away a large number of mortals as it flowed. Elephants and horses formed its great alligators and swords were its fishes and it was incapable of being tide over. It was terriblelooking and the bones of heroes formed the pebbles (in its bed) and drums and cymbals its tortoises. Shields and armours constituted its boats and the hair of warriors the moss and weeds that floated over it. Shafts constituted its wave-lets and bows its currents; and it abounded in snakes formed of the arms of warriors. It was of fierce current and carried away the Kurus and the Srinjayas alike. The heads of human beings formed its stones and their thighs its fishes and the maces its rafts: it was covered with froth formed of head-gcars and was infested with reptiles formed of the entrails (of animals) of awful appearance; it carried away heroes (to the other world); its mire was constituted by flesh and blood. Elephants were its alligators and standards the trees (on its banks). It drew down in its bottom thousands of Kshatriyas. It was fierce, clogged with corpses and had horse-soldiers for its sharks; and it was extremely difficult of being crossed over; and it flowed to the regions of Death. That river swarmed with hosts of monsters and dogs and jackals. It was haunted by cannibals of dreadful appearance on all sides,

Then Sikhandin pierced Drona with five straight-jointed shafts, Kshatradharma with twenty and Vasudeva with five. Uttamaujas in that battle, pierced him with three shafts, Kshatradeva with five, Satyaki with hundred and Yudhamanyu with eight. Yudhishthira pierced Drona with a dozen shaft and Dhrishtadyumna pierced him with ten the Chekitana with three shafts.

सात्यकिं चेकितानं च धृष्टद्युम्नशिखण्डिनौ। वार्धक्षेमिं चैत्रसेनि सेनाबिन्दुं सुवर्चसम्॥ एतांश्चान्यांश्च सुबहून् नानाजनपदेश्वरान्। सर्वान् द्रोणोऽजयद् युद्धे कुरुभिः परिवारितः॥

Satyaki, Chekitan, Dhrishtadyumna and Sikhandin, Vardakshemi, the son of Chitrasena and Senabindu and Suvorcha. These and numerous other rulers of different countries, were all defeated by Drona who was supported by the Kurus.
