संजय उवाच ततो युधिष्ठिरश्चैव भीमसेनश्च पाण्डवः। द्रोणपुत्रं महाराज समन्तात् पर्यवारयन्॥

saṃjaya uvāca tato yudhiṣṭhiraścaiva bhīmasenaśca pāṇḍavaḥ| droṇaputraṃ mahārāja samantāt paryavārayan||

Sanjaya said Then, O great monarch, king Yudhishthira and Bhimasena the son of Pandu hemmed in the son of Drona on all sides.

ततो दुर्योधनो राजा भारद्वाजेन संवृतः। अभ्ययात् पाण्डवान् संख्ये ततो युद्धमवर्तत॥

tato duryodhano rājā bhāradvājena saṃvṛtaḥ| abhyayāt pāṇḍavān saṃkhye tato yuddhamavartata||

King Duryodhana, then, accompanied by the son of Bharadvaja, advanced against the Pandavas in battle. Then commenced a fight.

घोररूपं महाराज भीरूणां भयवर्धनम्। अम्बष्ठान् मालवान् वङ्गाञ्छिबींस्त्रगर्तकानपि॥

ghorarūpaṃ mahārāja bhīrūṇāṃ bhayavardhanam| ambaṣṭhān mālavān vaṅgāñchibīṃstragartakānapi||

Terrible to look at, highly dreadful and increasing the terror of the cowards. Large numbers of the Ambhastas, the Malavas the Vangas, the Sivis and the Trigartas.

प्राहिणोन्मृत्युलोकाय गणान् क्रुद्धो वृकोदरः। अमीषाहाञ्छूरसेनान् क्षत्रियान् युद्धदुर्मदान्॥ निकृत्य पृथिवीं चक्रे भीमः शोणितकर्दमाम्। यौधेयानद्रिजान् राजन् मद्रकान्मालवानपि॥

prāhiṇonmṛtyulokāya gaṇān kruddho vṛkodaraḥ| amīṣāhāñchūrasenān kṣatriyān yuddhadurmadān|| nikṛtya pṛthivīṃ cakre bhīmaḥ śoṇitakardamām| yaudheyānadrijān rājan madrakānmālavānapi||

Were wrathfully sent by Yudhishthira to the region of Death. Cutting off (into pieces) the Abhisahas, the Surasenas and (other) Kshatriyas invincible in battle Bhima made the earth muddy with blood. (And) O king the Yaudheyas, the mountaineers, the Madrakas and the Malavas.

प्राहिणोन्मृत्युलोकाय किरीटी निशितैः शरैः। प्रगाढमञ्जोगतिभिर्नाराचैरभिताडिताः॥

prāhiṇonmṛtyulokāya kirīṭī niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ| pragāḍhamañjogatibhirnārācairabhitāḍitāḥ||

Were sent by the diadem-decked Shetavahana to the domains of Death. Deeply pierced with straight-coursing arrows.

निपेतुर्विरदा भूमौ द्विशृङ्गा इव पर्वताः। निकृत्तैर्हस्तिहस्तैश्च चेष्टमानैरितस्ततः॥

nipeturviradā bhūmau dviśṛṅgā iva parvatāḥ| nikṛttairhastihastaiśca ceṣṭamānairitastataḥ||

The tuskers dropped (dead) on the ground like mountain peaks, with the chopped-off trunks of elephants, still moving to and fro (in convulsions).

रराज वसुधाऽऽकीर्णा विसर्पद्भिरिवोरगैः। क्षिप्तैः कनकचित्रैश्च नृपच्छत्रैः क्षितिर्वभौ॥

rarāja vasudhā''kīrṇā visarpadbhirivoragaiḥ| kṣiptaiḥ kanakacitraiśca nṛpacchatraiḥ kṣitirvabhau||

The earth, being strewn all over, seemed to be full of snakes, moving about, with the fallen royal umbrellas decked with gold.

द्यौरिवादित्यचन्द्राधैर्ग्रहैः कीर्णा युगक्षये। हत प्रहरताभीता विध्यत व्यवकृन्तत॥

dyaurivādityacandrādhairgrahaiḥ kīrṇā yugakṣaye| hata praharatābhītā vidhyata vyavakṛntata||

The field, being scattered all over looked (beautiful) like the firmament studded with (innumerable) suns, moons and stars at the end of a Yuga. "Slay, strike dauntlessly, pierce and cut to pieces."

इत्यासीत् तुमुलः शब्दः शोणाश्वस्य रथं प्रति। द्रोणमस्तु परमक्रुद्धो वायव्यारेण संयुगे॥

ityāsīt tumulaḥ śabdaḥ śoṇāśvasya rathaṃ prati| droṇamastu paramakruddho vāyavyāreṇa saṃyuge||

These (and similar other) tumultuous uproars arose near the car of Shonasva (i.e. Drona). Getting terribly enraged, Drona also, by means of Vayaveya weapon, in that encounter.

व्यधमत् तान् महावायुर्मेघानिव दुरत्ययः। ते हन्यमाना द्रोणेन पञ्चालाः प्राद्रवन् भयात्॥

vyadhamat tān mahāvāyurmeghāniva duratyayaḥ| te hanyamānā droṇena pañcālāḥ prādravan bhayāt||

Began, like a furious hurricane (chasing away) the clouds, to destroy his enemies. (Thus slaughter by Drona, the Panchalas fled away from terror.

पश्यतो भीमसेनस्य पार्थस्य च महात्मनः। ततः किरीटी भीमश्च सहसा संन्यवर्तताम्॥

paśyato bhīmasenasya pārthasya ca mahātmanaḥ| tataḥ kirīṭī bhīmaśca sahasā saṃnyavartatām||

In the very presence of Bhimasena and of the high-souled Partha. (Then) that one who wore a coronet (i.e. Arjuna and Bhimasena, rallying (their troops) all on a sudden.

महता रथवंशेन परिगृह्य बलं महत्। बीभत्सुदक्षिणं पार्श्वमुत्तरं तु वृकोदरः॥

mahatā rathavaṃśena parigṛhya balaṃ mahat| bībhatsudakṣiṇaṃ pārśvamuttaraṃ tu vṛkodaraḥ||

Attacked the large army (of Drona) with a mighty car force. Vibhatsu attacking the right and Vrikodara the left flank (of Drona's army).

भारद्वाजं शरौघाभ्यां महद्भ्यामभ्यवर्षताम्। तौ तथा संजयाश्चैव पञ्चालाश्च महौजसः॥

bhāradvājaṃ śaraughābhyāṃ mahadbhyāmabhyavarṣatām| tau tathā saṃjayāścaiva pañcālāśca mahaujasaḥ||

They rained upon the son of Bharadvaja two mighty downpours of arrows. Then the Srinjayas and those great car-warriors, the Panchalas.

अन्वगच्छन् महाराज मत्स्यैश्च सह सोमकैः। तथैव तव पुत्रस्य रथोदाराः प्रहारिणः॥

anvagacchan mahārāja matsyaiśca saha somakaiḥ| tathaiva tava putrasya rathodārāḥ prahāriṇaḥ||

And the Matsyas together with the Somakas followed. In like manner, (many) car-warriors, who wore (efficient) smiters on the side of your son.

महत्या सेनया राजन् जग्मुर्दोणरथं प्रति। ततः सा भारतो सेना हन्यमाना किरीटिना॥

mahatyā senayā rājan jagmurdoṇarathaṃ prati| tataḥ sā bhārato senā hanyamānā kirīṭinā||

(Followed) by a vast army, O king, proceeded towards the car of Drona. Then that Bharata army slaughtered by Kiriti (i.e., Arjuna who wore a coronet).

तमसा निद्रया चैव पुनरेव व्यदीर्यत। द्रोणेन वार्यमाणास्ते स्वयं तव सुतेन च॥

tamasā nidrayā caiva punareva vyadīryata| droṇena vāryamāṇāste svayaṃ tava sutena ca||

(Overcome) with sleep and bewildered by darkness began once more to disperse. In spite of (the endeavours of) Drona and your son himself to prevent (their fight),

नाशक्यन्त महाराज योधा वारयितुं तदा। सा पाण्डुपुत्रस्य शरैदीर्यमाणा महाचमूः॥

nāśakyanta mahārāja yodhā vārayituṃ tadā| sā pāṇḍuputrasya śaraidīryamāṇā mahācamūḥ||

They were unable to rally the combat ts, O mighty monarch. That vast army, slaughter with arrows by the son of Pandu.

तमसा संवृते लोके व्यद्रवत् सर्वतोमुखी। उत्सृज्य शतशो वाहांस्तत्र केचिन्नराधिपाः। प्राद्रवन्त महाराज भयाविष्टाः समन्ततः॥

tamasā saṃvṛte loke vyadravat sarvatomukhī| utsṛjya śataśo vāhāṃstatra kecinnarādhipāḥ| prādravanta mahārāja bhayāviṣṭāḥ samantataḥ||

Took to flight in all directions when the world was enveloped in darkness. Hundreds of kings, leaving their conveyances, fled away, O great monarch, in terror, on all side.

प्राद्रवन्त महाराज भयाविष्टाः समन्ततः॥

prādravanta mahārāja bhayāviṣṭāḥ samantataḥ||

Took to flight in all directions when the world was enveloped in darkness. Hundreds of kings, leaving their conveyances, fled away, O great monarch, in terror, on all side.
