संजय उवाच काल्यमानेषु सैन्येषु शैनेयेन ततस्ततः। भारद्वाजः शरवातैर्महद्भिः समवाकिरत्॥

saṃjaya uvāca kālyamāneṣu sainyeṣu śaineyena tatastataḥ| bhāradvājaḥ śaravātairmahadbhiḥ samavākirat||

Sanjaya said When the troops on those parts of the field through which Sini's grandson had passed were compelled by him to tremble, the son of Bharadvaja covered him with a mighty shower of arrows.

स सम्प्रहारस्तुमुलो द्रोणसात्वतयोरभूत्। पश्यतां सर्वसैन्यानां बलिवासवयोरिव॥

sa samprahārastumulo droṇasātvatayorabhūt| paśyatāṃ sarvasainyānāṃ balivāsavayoriva||

Then a fierce fight commenced between Drona and him of the Satvata race, before the very eyes of all the troops-fight that resembled that between Bali and Vasava fought in the day's of yore.

ततो द्रोण: पौत्रं चित्रैः सर्वायसैः शरैः। त्रिभिराशीविपाकरैर्ललाटे समविध्यत॥

tato droṇa: pautraṃ citraiḥ sarvāyasaiḥ śaraiḥ| tribhirāśīvipākarairlalāṭe samavidhyata||

Then Drona pierced Sini's grandson on the forehead with three beautiful shafts wholly made or iron and looking like so many snakes of virulent poison.

तैर्ललाटार्पितैर्वाणैर्युयुधानस्त्वजिह्मगैः। व्यरोचत महाराज त्रिशृङ्ग इव पर्वतः॥

tairlalāṭārpitairvāṇairyuyudhānastvajihmagaiḥ| vyarocata mahārāja triśṛṅga iva parvataḥ||

O mighty monarch, with those straightgoing shafts struck the forehead, Yuyudhana appeared beautiful like a mountain with three peaks. on

ततोऽस्य बाणानपरानिन्द्राशनिसमस्वनान्। भारद्वाजोऽन्तरप्रेक्षी प्रेषयामास संयुगे॥

tato'sya bāṇānaparānindrāśanisamasvanān| bhāradvājo'ntaraprekṣī preṣayāmāsa saṃyuge||

Then Bharadvaja's son, ever on the watch for an opportunity for defeating his focs, once more sped at Satyaki shafts whose whizz resembled the rumble of Indra's thunder.

तान् द्रोणचापनिर्मुक्तान् दाशार्हः पतत: शरान्। द्वाभ्यां द्वाभ्यां सुषुङ्खाभ्यां चिच्छेद परमास्त्रवित्॥

tān droṇacāpanirmuktān dāśārhaḥ patata: śarān| dvābhyāṃ dvābhyāṃ suṣuṅkhābhyāṃ ciccheda paramāstravit||

Then he of the Dasarha race conversant with many excellent weapons, cut-off those shafts shot from Drona's bow and coming towards hiin, each with a couple of arrows equipped with excellent wings.

तामस्य लघुतां द्रोण: समवेक्ष्य विशाम्पते। प्रहस्य सहसाविध्यत् त्रिंशता शिनिपुङ्गवम्॥

tāmasya laghutāṃ droṇa: samavekṣya viśāmpate| prahasya sahasāvidhyat triṃśatā śinipuṅgavam||

Then, O ruler of men, Drona beholding his light-handedness, smiled and then pierced that foremost of Sini's descendant with thirty sharp arrows.

पुनः पञ्चाशतेषूणां शितेन च समापयत्। लघुतां युयुधानस्य लाघवेन विशेषयन्॥

punaḥ pañcāśateṣūṇāṃ śitena ca samāpayat| laghutāṃ yuyudhānasya lāghavena viśeṣayan||

Then once more he pierced him with fifty and hundred shafts successively, thus surpassing with his own lightness of hands the lightness displayed by Yuyudhana.

समुन्पतन्ति वल्मीकाद् यथाक्रुद्धा महोरगाः। तथा द्रोणरथाद् राजन्नापतन्ति तनुच्छिदः॥

samunpatanti valmīkād yathākruddhā mahoragāḥ| tathā droṇarathād rājannāpatanti tanucchidaḥ||

Just as, O king, mighty snakes excited to fury, plunge off from the ant-hills, so from the car of Drona numerous shafts were seen to fly.

तथैव युयुधानेन सृष्टाः शतसहस्रशः। अवाकिरन् द्रोणरथं शरा रुधिरभोजनाः॥

tathaiva yuyudhānena sṛṣṭāḥ śatasahasraśaḥ| avākiran droṇarathaṃ śarā rudhirabhojanāḥ||

Similarly hundreds and thousands of shafts all capable of drinking blood, covered the car of Drona being discharged by Yuyudhana.

लाघवाद् द्विजमुख्यस्य सात्वतस्य च मारिष। विशेषं माध्यगच्छाम समावास्तां नरर्षभौ॥

lāghavād dvijamukhyasya sātvatasya ca māriṣa| viśeṣaṃ mādhyagacchāma samāvāstāṃ nararṣabhau||

O sire, we were then not able to detect which of the two, that foremost of the Brahmanas or he of the Satvata race, excelled the other in lightness of hands; but both of those best of men appeared to be equal.

सात्यकिस्तु ततो द्रोणं नवभिनतपर्वभिः। आजघान भृशं क्रुद्धो ध्वजं च निशितैःशरैः॥

sātyakistu tato droṇaṃ navabhinataparvabhiḥ| ājaghāna bhṛśaṃ kruddho dhvajaṃ ca niśitaiḥśaraiḥ||

Then excited to the highest pitch of fury, Satyaki struck Drona in battle with mine shafts of depressed knots. He also struck with sharp shafts, the standard.

सारथिं च शतेनैव भारद्वाजस्य पश्यतः। लाघवं युयुधानस्य दृष्ट्वा द्रोणो महारथः॥

sārathiṃ ca śatenaiva bhāradvājasya paśyataḥ| lāghavaṃ yuyudhānasya dṛṣṭvā droṇo mahārathaḥ||

सप्तत्या सारथिं विद्ध्वा तुरङ्गांश्चत्रिस्त्रिभिः। ध्वजमेकेन चिच्छेद माधवस्य रथे स्थितम्॥

saptatyā sārathiṃ viddhvā turaṅgāṃścatristribhiḥ| dhvajamekena ciccheda mādhavasya rathe sthitam||

Piercing the charioteer of him of Madhu's race with seventy arrows and the horses with three arrows each, cut-off his standard with a single arrows.

अथापरेण भल्लेन हेमपुखेन पत्रिणा। धनुचिच्छेद समरे माधवस्य महात्मनः॥

athāpareṇa bhallena hemapukhena patriṇā| dhanuciccheda samare mādhavasya mahātmanaḥ||

Then with another broad-headed shaft equipped with golden wings, he curt off bow of that illustrious descendant of Madhu's race.

सात्यकिस्तुततःक्रुद्धो धनुस्त्यक्त्वा महारथः। गदां जग्राह महती भारद्वाजाय चाक्षिपत्॥

sātyakistutataḥkruddho dhanustyaktvā mahārathaḥ| gadāṃ jagrāha mahatī bhāradvājāya cākṣipat||

Thereat that mighty car-warrior Satyaki highly excited with rage, laid aside his bow and taking up a mighty mace, hurled it at the son of Bharadvaja.

तामापतन्ती सहसा पट्टबद्धामयस्मयीम्। न्यवारयच्छरैद्रोणो बहुभिर्बहुरूपिभिः॥

tāmāpatantī sahasā paṭṭabaddhāmayasmayīm| nyavārayaccharaidroṇo bahubhirbahurūpibhiḥ||

Then Drona with numerous shafts of various appearance, baffled that mace made of iron and covered with silken cloth, as it coursed vehemently towards him.

अथान्यद् धनुरादाय सात्यकिः सत्यविक्रमः। बिव्याध बहुभिर्वीरं भारद्वाजं शिलाशितैः॥

athānyad dhanurādāya sātyakiḥ satyavikramaḥ| bivyādha bahubhirvīraṃ bhāradvājaṃ śilāśitaiḥ||

Thereafter Satyaki of prowess incapable of being baffled taking up another bow, pierced the heroic son of Bharadvaja with numerous shafts whetted on stone.

स विद्ध्वा समरे द्रोणं सिंहनादममुञ्चत। तं वै न ममृषे द्रोणः सर्वशस्त्रभृतां वरः॥

sa viddhvā samare droṇaṃ siṃhanādamamuñcata| taṃ vai na mamṛṣe droṇaḥ sarvaśastrabhṛtāṃ varaḥ||

Thus wounding Drona in battle he sent up his war-cry. But Drona that foremost of all wielders of weapons did not brook that war-cry of his.

ततः शक्तिं गृहीत्वा तु रुक्मदण्डामयस्मयीम्। तरसा प्रेषयामास माधवस्य रथं प्रति॥

tataḥ śaktiṃ gṛhītvā tu rukmadaṇḍāmayasmayīm| tarasā preṣayāmāsa mādhavasya rathaṃ prati||

Then taking up a lance of golden staff and iron-head, Drona hurled it vchemently at the car of that descendant of Madhu's race (Satyaki).

अनासाद्य तु शैनेयं सा शक्तिः कालसंनिभा। भित्त्वा रथं जगामोग्रा धरणी दारुणस्वना॥

anāsādya tu śaineyaṃ sā śaktiḥ kālasaṃnibhā| bhittvā rathaṃ jagāmogrā dharaṇī dāruṇasvanā||

That lance resembling the Destroyer himself, without reaching the grandson of Sini, penetrated through his chariot and then fell on the ground, looking fierce and emitting a loud noise.

ततोद्रोणं शिने:पौत्रो राजन् विव्याध पत्रिणा। दक्षिणं भुजमासाद्य पीडयन् भरतर्षभ॥

tatodroṇaṃ śine:pautro rājan vivyādha patriṇā| dakṣiṇaṃ bhujamāsādya pīḍayan bharatarṣabha||

Thereafter ( king, Sini's grandson pierced Drona on his right arin with many winged shafts. Thus, O foremost of the Bharatas, Drona was greatly afflicted,

द्रोणोऽपि समरे राजन् माधवस्य महद् धनुः। अर्धचन्द्रेण चिच्छेद रथशक्त्वा च सारथिम्॥

droṇo'pi samare rājan mādhavasya mahad dhanuḥ| ardhacandreṇa ciccheda rathaśaktvā ca sārathim||

In that battle Drona also, O king, with a crescent-shaped arrow cut-off the mighty bow of that descendant of Madhava; and he smote the latter's driver with a lance.

मुमोह सारथिस्तस्य रथशक्त्या समाहतः। स रथोपस्थमासाद्य मुहूर्त संन्यषीदत॥

mumoha sārathistasya rathaśaktyā samāhataḥ| sa rathopasthamāsādya muhūrta saṃnyaṣīdata||

Satyaki's charioteer was then overwhelmed with a swoon in consequent of his being struck with that dart. For a while, he lay senseless on his niche on the car.

चकार सात्यकी राजन् सूतकर्मातिमानुषम्। अयोधयच यद् द्रोणं रश्मीञ्जग्राह च स्वयम्॥

cakāra sātyakī rājan sūtakarmātimānuṣam| ayodhayaca yad droṇaṃ raśmīñjagrāha ca svayam||

Then, o king, Satyaki achieved a superhuman feat, in as much as he fought on with Drona and held the reins of his horse like his driver simultaneously.

ततः शरशतेनैव युयुधानो महारथः। अविध्यद् ब्राह्मणं संख्ये दृष्टरूपो विशाम्पते॥

tataḥ śaraśatenaiva yuyudhāno mahārathaḥ| avidhyad brāhmaṇaṃ saṃkhye dṛṣṭarūpo viśāmpate||

Then, O ruler of men, with a cheerful appearance, the mighty car-warrior Yuyudhana, pierced in that that battle that Brahmana with a set of hundred arrows.

तस्य द्रोणः शरान् पञ्च चप्रेषयामास भारत। ते घोराः कवचं भित्त्वा पपुः शोणितमाहवे॥

tasya droṇaḥ śarān pañca capreṣayāmāsa bhārata| te ghorāḥ kavacaṃ bhittvā papuḥ śoṇitamāhave||

At him then Drona sped, O Bharata, five shafts and those dreadful shaft penetrating through his armour drank his life-blood.

निर्विद्धस्तु शरैोरैरक्रुद्ध्यत् सात्यकि शम्। सायकान् व्यसृजचापि वीरो रुक्मरथं प्रति॥

nirviddhastu śaraiorairakruddhyat sātyaki śam| sāyakān vyasṛjacāpi vīro rukmarathaṃ prati||

Pierced deeply with those fierce arrows Satyaki became exited to the highest pitch of Wrath; and then that hero began to shoot numerous arrows at him of the golden car.

ततो द्रोणस्य यन्तारं निपात्यैकेषुणा भुवि। अश्वान् व्यद्रावयद् बाणैर्हतसूतांस्ततस्ततः॥

tato droṇasya yantāraṃ nipātyaikeṣuṇā bhuvi| aśvān vyadrāvayad bāṇairhatasūtāṃstatastataḥ||

He then felled Drona's driver by striking him with a single arrow; then with other arrows, he compelled his horses to run away from the field.

स रथः प्रद्रुतः संख्ये मण्डलानि सहस्रशः। चकार राजतो राजन् भ्राजमान इवांशुमान्॥

sa rathaḥ pradrutaḥ saṃkhye maṇḍalāni sahasraśaḥ| cakāra rājato rājan bhrājamāna ivāṃśumān||

That resplendent chariot, Oking, dragged over all parts of the field, began to describe various circles like the Sun in motion.

अभिद्रवत गृह्णीत हयान् द्रोणस्य धावत। इति स्म चुक्रुशुः सर्वे राजपुत्राः सराजकाः॥

abhidravata gṛhṇīta hayān droṇasya dhāvata| iti sma cukruśuḥ sarve rājaputrāḥ sarājakāḥ||

'Rush,' 'seize the running steeds of Drona,' these were the words that were then uttered loudly by the kings and princes of the Kaurava host.

ते सात्यकिमपास्याशु राजन् युधि महारथाः। यतो द्रोणस्ततः सर्वे सहसा समुपाद्रवन्॥

te sātyakimapāsyāśu rājan yudhi mahārathāḥ| yato droṇastataḥ sarve sahasā samupādravan||

O king, then all those mighty car-warriors, leaving Satyaki in battle, proceeded to the spot where Drona was carried away by his horses.

तान् दृष्ट्वाप्रदुतान् संख्ये सात्वतेन शरार्दितान्। प्रभग्नं पुनरेवासीत् तव सैन्यं समाकुलम्॥

tān dṛṣṭvāpradutān saṃkhye sātvatena śarārditān| prabhagnaṃ punarevāsīt tava sainyaṃ samākulam||

Then once more seeing all those heroes routed and afflicted by the scion of the Satvata race, your troops once more began to give way, being overwhelmed with fear.

व्यूहस्यैव पुनरं गत्वा द्रोणो व्यवस्थितः। वातायमानैस्तैरश्वैर्नीतो वृष्णिशरार्दितैः॥

vyūhasyaiva punaraṃ gatvā droṇo vyavasthitaḥ| vātāyamānaistairaśvairnīto vṛṣṇiśarārditaiḥ||

Drona, once more proceeding to the gate of the array of his troops, stationed himself there, borne away, as he was, by those steeds of the fleetness of the wind, that had been afflicted by the shafts of the Vrishni hero.

पाण्डुपाञ्चालसम्भिन्नं व्यूहमालोक्य वीर्यवान्। शैनेये नाकरोद् यत्नं व्यूहमेवाभ्यरक्षत॥

pāṇḍupāñcālasambhinnaṃ vyūhamālokya vīryavān| śaineye nākarod yatnaṃ vyūhamevābhyarakṣata||

Then that highly puissant Drona, seeing his array shattered by the Pandavas and the Panchalas, did not try to check the grandson of Sini, but began to re-arrange his broken array.

निवार्य पाण्डुपञ्चालान् द्रोणाग्निः प्रदहनिव। तस्थौ क्रोधेमसंदीप्तः कालसूर्य इवोद्यतः॥

nivārya pāṇḍupañcālān droṇāgniḥ pradahaniva| tasthau krodhemasaṃdīptaḥ kālasūrya ivodyataḥ||

Resisting the Pandavas and the Panchalas, the Drona-fire then, burning in rage, stationed himself there, consuming everything like the Sun that rises at the end of a Yuga.
