वासुदेव उवाच दुर्योधनमतिक्रान्तमेतं पश्य धनंजय। अत्यद्भुतमिमं मन्ये नास्त्यस्य सदृशो रथः॥

vāsudeva uvāca duryodhanamatikrāntametaṃ paśya dhanaṃjaya| atyadbhutamimaṃ manye nāstyasya sadṛśo rathaḥ||

Vasudeva said O Dhananjaya, behold, Suyodhana has outrun Meseems this to be highly wonderful. There is indeed no car-warrior equal to him.

दूरपाती महेष्वासः कृतास्त्रो युद्धदुर्मदः। दृढास्त्रश्चित्रयोधी च धार्तराष्ट्रो महाबलः॥

dūrapātī maheṣvāsaḥ kṛtāstro yuddhadurmadaḥ| dṛḍhāstraścitrayodhī ca dhārtarāṣṭro mahābalaḥ||

He is capable of shooting his arrows to a great distance; he is a fierce bowman, accomplished in the use of all weapon and formidable in battle. This son of Dhritarashtra is endued with great prowess and strikes hard and is versed in all modes of warfare.

अत्यन्तसुखसंवृद्धो मानितश्च महारथः। कृती च सततं पार्थ नित्यं द्वेष्टि च बान्धवान्॥

atyantasukhasaṃvṛddho mānitaśca mahārathaḥ| kṛtī ca satataṃ pārtha nityaṃ dveṣṭi ca bāndhavān||

Reared in all luxury, he is highly esteemed by all the mighty car-warriors. O Partha, he is accomplished and the constant hater of the Pandavas.

तेन युद्धमहं मन्ये प्राप्तकालं तवानघ। अत्र वो द्यूतमायत्तं विजयायेतराय वा॥

tena yuddhamahaṃ manye prāptakālaṃ tavānagha| atra vo dyūtamāyattaṃ vijayāyetarāya vā||

O sinless one, for these reasons I think that the time had now arrived, when you shall fight with him. Upon him rests, as upon a stake at dice, victory or the reverse.

अत्र क्रोधविषं पार्थ विमुञ्च चिरसम्भृतम्। एष मूलमनर्थानां पाण्डवानां महारथः॥

atra krodhaviṣaṃ pārtha vimuñca cirasambhṛtam| eṣa mūlamanarthānāṃ pāṇḍavānāṃ mahārathaḥ||

On him vomit the venom of your wrath that you have cherished so long, O Partha. This mighty car-warrior is the root of all wrongs inflicted on the Pandavas.

सोऽयं प्राप्तस्तवाक्षेपं पश्य साफल्यमात्मनः। कथं हि राजा राज्यार्थी त्वया गच्छेत संयुगम्॥६

so'yaṃ prāptastavākṣepaṃ paśya sāphalyamātmanaḥ| kathaṃ hi rājā rājyārthī tvayā gaccheta saṃyugam||6

He is not within your arrow-shot. Be mindful of your success. Why has king Duryodhana, desirous as he is of enjoying the kingdom come to fight with you?

दिष्ट्या त्विदानी सम्प्राप्त एष ते बाणगोचरम्। यथायं जीवितं जह्यात् तथा कुरु धनंजय॥

diṣṭyā tvidānī samprāpta eṣa te bāṇagocaram| yathāyaṃ jīvitaṃ jahyāt tathā kuru dhanaṃjaya||

By good fortune it is that he has now come within the reach arrows, 0 Dhananjaya, do you so strive now, that this one may lose his very life in battle.

ऐश्वर्यमदसम्मूढो नैष दुःखमुपेयिवान्। न च ते संयुगे वीर्ये जानाति पुरुषर्षभ॥

aiśvaryamadasammūḍho naiṣa duḥkhamupeyivān| na ca te saṃyuge vīrye jānāti puruṣarṣabha||

Elated with the pride engendered by his prosperity, he has never experienced pain. O foremost of men, he knows your prowess in battle.

त्वां हि लोकास्त्रयः पार्थ ससुरासुरमानुषाः। नोत्सहन्ते रणे जेतुं किमुतैकः सुयोधनः॥

tvāṃ hi lokāstrayaḥ pārtha sasurāsuramānuṣāḥ| notsahante raṇe jetuṃ kimutaikaḥ suyodhanaḥ||

O Partha, the three worlds and the celestials, the Asuras and the men, cannot bear you in battle, what to speak of this singlehanded Suyodhana? of your

स दिष्ट्या समनुप्राप्तस्तव पार्थ रथान्तिकम्। जह्येनं त्वं महाबाहो यथा वृत्रं पुरंदरः॥

sa diṣṭyā samanuprāptastava pārtha rathāntikam| jahyenaṃ tvaṃ mahābāho yathā vṛtraṃ puraṃdaraḥ||

By good luck, has he now come near your chariot; O Partha, slay him, O mighty-armed hero, even as Purandara (Indra) slew Vritra (in days gone by).

एष ह्यनर्थे सततं पराक्रान्तस्तवानघ। निकृत्या धर्मराजं च द्यूते वञ्चितवानयम्॥

eṣa hyanarthe satataṃ parākrāntastavānagha| nikṛtyā dharmarājaṃ ca dyūte vañcitavānayam||

O sinless one, this Duryodhana ever tried to bring down distress on you. Through deceitful measures, he defeated the very virtuous king Yudhishthira at the game of dice.

बहूनि सुनृशंसानि कृतान्येतेन मानद। युष्मासु पापमतिना अपापेष्वेव नित्यदा॥

bahūni sunṛśaṃsāni kṛtānyetena mānada| yuṣmāsu pāpamatinā apāpeṣveva nityadā||

O bestower of honour, sinless though you all are, this one of sinful understanding had always injured you with many cruel wrongs.

तमनार्यं सदा क्रुद्धं पुरुषं कामचारिणम्। आर्यां युद्धे मतिं कृत्वा जहि पार्थाविचारयन्॥

tamanāryaṃ sadā kruddhaṃ puruṣaṃ kāmacāriṇam| āryāṃ yuddhe matiṃ kṛtvā jahi pārthāvicārayan||

Nobly resolving to fight, O you son of Pritha, slay without any hesitation, this perverse wretch who is ever vindictive and cruel and who is avarice incarnate.

निकृत्या राज्यहरणं वनवासं च पाण्डव। परिक्लेशं च कृष्णाया हदि कृत्वा पराक्रमम्॥

nikṛtyā rājyaharaṇaṃ vanavāsaṃ ca pāṇḍava| parikleśaṃ ca kṛṣṇāyā hadi kṛtvā parākramam||

O son of Pandu, put forth all your prowess, recollecting the despoliation of your kingdom through deceit, your exile in the woods and the woes of Krishna.

दिष्ट्यैष तव बाणानां गोचरे परिवर्तते। प्रतिघाताय कार्यस्य दिष्ट्या च यततेऽग्रतः॥

diṣṭyaiṣa tava bāṇānāṃ gocare parivartate| pratighātāya kāryasya diṣṭyā ca yatate'grataḥ||

Through good fortune it is, that he now move within the range of your arrows. By good luck it is that, staying before you, he is striving to thwart you in the fulfilment of your purposes.

दिष्ट्या जानाति संग्रामे योद्धव्यं हि त्वया सह। दिष्ट्या च सफलाः पार्थसर्वे कामा ह्यकामिताः॥

diṣṭyā jānāti saṃgrāme yoddhavyaṃ hi tvayā saha| diṣṭyā ca saphalāḥ pārthasarve kāmā hyakāmitāḥ||

By good luck it is that he has come to know that he will have to fight with you! By good luck it is that all your desires, though not at present eagerly cherished, will meet with their fruition, O Pritha's son.

तस्माज्जहि रणे पार्थ धार्तराष्ट्र कुलाधमम्। यथेन्द्रेण हतः पूर्वे जम्भो देवासुरे मृधे॥

tasmājjahi raṇe pārtha dhārtarāṣṭra kulādhamam| yathendreṇa hataḥ pūrve jambho devāsure mṛdhe||

For these reasons, O Partha, slay you this disgrace to the race of Dhritarashtra, even as Indra slew the Asura Jambha in days gone by, in the battle between the celestials and the Asuras.

अस्मिन् हते त्वया सैन्यमनाथं भिद्यतामिदम्। वैरस्यास्यास्त्ववभृथो मूलं छिन्धि दुरात्मनाम्॥

asmin hate tvayā sainyamanāthaṃ bhidyatāmidam| vairasyāsyāstvavabhṛtho mūlaṃ chindhi durātmanām||

If this one be slain by you, you can penetrate through this array that will be then masterless. Let the Avabhritha of these hostilities be performed now, cut the root of these wretches of wicked souls.

संजय उवाच तं तथेत्यब्रवीत् पार्थः कृत्यरूपमिदं मम। सर्वमन्यदनात्य गच्छ यत्र सुयोधनः॥

saṃjaya uvāca taṃ tathetyabravīt pārthaḥ kṛtyarūpamidaṃ mama| sarvamanyadanātya gaccha yatra suyodhanaḥ||

Sanjaya said Thus spoken to, Pritha's son answered him saying-"Let it be so. Even this will I do. Unmindful of anything else, drive where Duryodhana stands.

येनैतद् दीर्घकालं नो भुक्तं राज्यमकण्टकम्। अप्यस्य युधि विक्रम्य छिन्द्यां मूर्धानमाहवे॥

yenaitad dīrghakālaṃ no bhuktaṃ rājyamakaṇṭakam| apyasya yudhi vikramya chindyāṃ mūrdhānamāhave||

Putting forth all my prowess in battle, I will in this day's battle, cut-off the head of this wretch, who had enjoyed our dominions for a long period, without a single thorn in his side.

अपि तस्य शनायाः परिक्लेशस्य माधव। कृष्णायाः शकुयां गन्तुं पदं केशप्रधर्षणे॥

api tasya śanāyāḥ parikleśasya mādhava| kṛṣṇāyāḥ śakuyāṃ gantuṃ padaṃ keśapradharṣaṇe||

O Keshava, shall I not be successful in avenging the wrongs inflicted on Draupadi by her being dragged by the hair, undeserving as she was of such treatment?

इत्येवंवादिनौ कृष्णौ हृष्टौ श्वेतान् हयोत्तमान्। प्रेषयामासतुः संख्ये प्रेप्सन्तौ तं नराधिपम्॥

ityevaṃvādinau kṛṣṇau hṛṣṭau śvetān hayottamān| preṣayāmāsatuḥ saṃkhye prepsantau taṃ narādhipam||

Thus speaking to each other and filled with delight, the two Krishnas urged on their steeds of white hue and best breed, with a view to get at the ruler of the Kurus viz., king Duryodhana.

त्योः समीपं सम्प्राप्य पुत्रस्ते भरतर्षभ। न चकार भयं प्राप्ते भये महति मारिष॥

tyoḥ samīpaṃ samprāpya putraste bharatarṣabha| na cakāra bhayaṃ prāpte bhaye mahati māriṣa||

तदस्य क्षत्रियास्तत्र सर्व एवाभ्यपूजयन्। यदर्जुनहषीकेशौ प्रत्युद्यातौ न्यवारयत्॥

tadasya kṣatriyāstatra sarva evābhyapūjayan| yadarjunahaṣīkeśau pratyudyātau nyavārayat||

Then all the Kshatriyas present there applauded him, inasmuch as he ventured to rush against Arjuna and Hrishikesha with a view to oppose them.

ततः सर्वस्य सैन्यस्य तावकस्य विशाम्पते। महानादो ह्यभूत् तत्र दृष्ट्वा राजानमाहवे॥

tataḥ sarvasya sainyasya tāvakasya viśāmpate| mahānādo hyabhūt tatra dṛṣṭvā rājānamāhave||

तस्मिञ्जनसमुन्नादे प्रवृत्ते भैरवे सति। कदर्थीकृत्य ते पुत्रः प्रत्यमित्रमवारयत्॥

tasmiñjanasamunnāde pravṛtte bhairave sati| kadarthīkṛtya te putraḥ pratyamitramavārayat||

When that loud and dreadful uproar was set up by your people, your son pressing his foe hard, began to impede his progress.

आवारितस्तु कौन्तेयस्तव पुत्रेण घन्विना। संरम्भमगमद् भूयः स च तस्मिन् परंतपः॥

āvāritastu kaunteyastava putreṇa ghanvinā| saṃrambhamagamad bhūyaḥ sa ca tasmin paraṃtapaḥ||

Opposed by that illustrious bowmen viz., your son, the son of Kunti became excited to the highest pitch of fury; also that afflicter of foes, your son, became highly angry upon Dhananjaya.

तौ दृष्ट्वा प्रतिसंरब्धौ दुर्योधनधनंजयौ। अभ्यवैक्षन्त राजानो भीमरूपाः समन्ततः॥

tau dṛṣṭvā pratisaṃrabdhau duryodhanadhanaṃjayau| abhyavaikṣanta rājāno bhīmarūpāḥ samantataḥ||

Then beholding Duryodhana and Dhananjaya, both enraged against each other, all the royal warriors of fierce appearance, began to look at them from all sides.

दृष्ट्वा तु पार्थे संरब्धं वासुदेवं च मारिष। प्रसन्नेव पुत्रस्ते योद्धुकामः समाह्वयत्॥

dṛṣṭvā tu pārthe saṃrabdhaṃ vāsudevaṃ ca māriṣa| prasanneva putraste yoddhukāmaḥ samāhvayat||

Beholding Partha and Vasudeva both filled with wrath, your son desirous of fighting with them, smiling, challenged them to the combat.

ततः प्रहष्टो दाशार्हः पाण्डवश्च धनंजयः। व्यक्रोशेतां महानादं दध्यतुश्चाम्बुजोत्तमौ॥

tataḥ prahaṣṭo dāśārhaḥ pāṇḍavaśca dhanaṃjayaḥ| vyakrośetāṃ mahānādaṃ dadhyatuścāmbujottamau||

Thereupon he of the Dasharha race and Dhananjaya the son of Pandu filled with delight, uttered loud shouts and blew their best of conchs.

तौ हृष्टरूपौ सम्प्रेक्ष्य कौरवेयास्तु सर्वशः। निराशाः समपद्यन्त पुत्रस्य तव जीविते॥

tau hṛṣṭarūpau samprekṣya kauraveyāstu sarvaśaḥ| nirāśāḥ samapadyanta putrasya tava jīvite||

शोकमायुः परे चैव कुरुः सर्व एव ते। अमन्यन्त च पुत्रं ते वैश्वानरमुखे हुतम्॥

śokamāyuḥ pare caiva kuruḥ sarva eva te| amanyanta ca putraṃ te vaiśvānaramukhe hutam||

Then many among the enemies and the Kurus were filled with grief, as they then considered your son to be like a libation poured into the mouth of fire.

तथा तु दृष्ट्वा योधास्ते प्रहृष्टौ कृष्णपाण्डवौ। हतो राजा हतो राजेत्यूचिरे च भयार्दिताः॥

tathā tu dṛṣṭvā yodhāste prahṛṣṭau kṛṣṇapāṇḍavau| hato rājā hato rājetyūcire ca bhayārditāḥ||

Then your warriors beholding Krishna and Pandu's son filled with joy, out of fear, began to exclaim saying "the king is slain, the king is slain."

जनस्य संनिनादं तु श्रुत्वा दुर्योधनोऽब्रवीत्। व्येतु वो भीरहं कृष्णौ प्रेषयिष्यामि मृत्यवे॥

janasya saṃninādaṃ tu śrutvā duryodhano'bravīt| vyetu vo bhīrahaṃ kṛṣṇau preṣayiṣyāmi mṛtyave||

But Duryodhana, hearing that confusion created by his own men, said-"Let all your apprehensions be dispelled; I will send the two Krishnas to the abode of Death"

इत्युक्त्वा सैनिकान् सर्वाञ्जयापेक्षी नराधिपः। पार्थमाभाष्य संरम्भादिदं वचनमब्रवीत्॥

ityuktvā sainikān sarvāñjayāpekṣī narādhipaḥ| pārthamābhāṣya saṃrambhādidaṃ vacanamabravīt||

Having thus spoken to the soldiers, the king desirous of victory, addressing Pritha's son, out of anger, said these wordsपार्थ यच्छिक्षितं तेऽस्त्रं दिव्यं पार्थिवमेव च।

तद् दर्शय मयि क्षिप्रं यदि जातोऽसि पाण्डुना॥

tad darśaya mayi kṣipraṃ yadi jāto'si pāṇḍunā||

'O son of Pritha, if you are begotten by Pandu, then quickly display against me all weapons the use of which you learned from the celestials or on this Earth?

यद् बलं तव वीर्यं च केशवस्य तथैव च। तत् कुरुष्व मयि क्षिप्रं पश्यामस्तव पौरुषम्॥

yad balaṃ tava vīryaṃ ca keśavasya tathaiva ca| tat kuruṣva mayi kṣipraṃ paśyāmastava pauruṣam||

Exert all your might and prowess and let also Keshava do so, against me. I want to see your manliness.

अस्मत्परोक्षं कर्माणि कृतानि प्रवहन्ति ते। स्वामिसत्कारयुक्तानि यानि तानीह दर्शय॥

asmatparokṣaṃ karmāṇi kṛtāni pravahanti te| svāmisatkārayuktāni yāni tānīha darśaya||

Men speak of many feats achieved by you out of our view. Show all those feats to me that have rendered you worthy of the applause and reverence of others."
