संजय उवाच विराटोऽथ त्रिभिर्बाणैर्भीष्ममार्छन्महारथम्। विव्याध तुरगांश्चास्य त्रिभिर्बाणैर्महारथः॥
saṃjaya uvāca virāṭo'tha tribhirbāṇairbhīṣmamārchanmahāratham| vivyādha turagāṃścāsya tribhirbāṇairmahārathaḥ||
Sanjaya said Then the mighty car-warrior Virata pierced with three arrows the mighty car-warrior Bhishma, and the latter's steeds with another three arrows.

taṃ pratyavidhyad daśabhirbhīṣmaḥ śāntanavaḥ śaraiḥ| rukmapujairmaheṣvāsaḥ kṛtahasto mahābalaḥ||
Thereat Bhishma the son of Shantanu, that mighty bow-man endued with great strength and lightness of hands, pierced him in return with ten shafts furnished with wings of gold.

द्रौणिर्गाण्डीवधन्वानं भीमधन्वा महारथः। अविध्यदिषुभिः षड्भिर्दृढहस्तः स्तनान्तरे॥
drauṇirgāṇḍīvadhanvānaṃ bhīmadhanvā mahārathaḥ| avidhyadiṣubhiḥ ṣaḍbhirdṛḍhahastaḥ stanāntare||
Then that fierce bow-man and mighty carwarrior of firm hands, namely, the son of Drona pierced with six shafts the wielder of the Gandiva bow between his breasts.

कार्मुकं तस्य चिच्छेद फाल्गुनः परवीरहा। अविध्यच्च भृशं तीक्ष्णैः पत्रिभिः शत्रुकर्शनः॥
kārmukaṃ tasya ciccheda phālgunaḥ paravīrahā| avidhyacca bhṛśaṃ tīkṣṇaiḥ patribhiḥ śatrukarśanaḥ||
Thereat the slayer of his foes, that humiliator of his antagonists, namely, Phalguna (Arjuna), cut down the bow of Drona's son and pierced him sore in return with five sharp arrows.

सोऽन्यत् कार्मुकमादाय वेगवान् क्रोधमूर्च्छितः। अमृष्यमाणः पार्थेन कार्मुकच्छेदमाहवे॥

अविध्यत् फाल्गुनं राजन् नवत्या निशितैः शरैः। वासुदेवं च सप्तत्या विव्याध परमेषुभिः॥ ततः क्रोधाभिताम्राक्षः कृष्णेन सह फाल्गुनः। दीर्घमुष्णं च नि:श्वस्य चिन्तयित्वा पुनः पुनः॥
avidhyat phālgunaṃ rājan navatyā niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ| vāsudevaṃ ca saptatyā vivyādha parameṣubhiḥ|| tataḥ krodhābhitāmrākṣaḥ kṛṣṇena saha phālgunaḥ| dīrghamuṣṇaṃ ca ni:śvasya cintayitvā punaḥ punaḥ||
And, o king, pierced Phalguna (Arjuna) with ninety keen-pointed shafts then with seventy excellent arrows he pierced the son of Vasudeva. Thereupon with eyes coppery in rage, Phalguna with Krishna breathing long and hot and reflecting again and again,

धनुः प्रपीड्य वामन करेणामित्रकर्शनः। गाण्डीवधन्वा संक्रुद्धः शितान् संनतपर्वणः॥ जीवितान्तकरान् घोरान् समादत्त शिलीमुखान्। तैस्तूर्णं समरेऽविध्यद् द्रौणि बलवतां वरः॥
dhanuḥ prapīḍya vāmana kareṇāmitrakarśanaḥ| gāṇḍīvadhanvā saṃkruddhaḥ śitān saṃnataparvaṇaḥ|| jīvitāntakarān ghorān samādatta śilīmukhān| taistūrṇaṃ samare'vidhyad drauṇi balavatāṃ varaḥ||
And also that grinder of foes that foremost of mighty heroes pressing his bow with his left arm, and excited with rage, and wielding the Gandiva bow, placed on the bow-string sharp and straight and fierce shafts capable of depriving a foe of his life; and therewith, in that battle, speedily pierced the son of Drona.

तस्य ते कवचं भित्त्वा पपुः शोणितमाहवे। न विव्यथे च निर्भिन्नो द्रोणिर्गाण्डीवधन्वना॥ तथैव च शरान् द्रौणिः प्रविमुञ्चन्नविह्वलः। तस्थौ स समरे राजंस्त्रातुमिच्छन् महाव्रतम्॥
tasya te kavacaṃ bhittvā papuḥ śoṇitamāhave| na vivyathe ca nirbhinno droṇirgāṇḍīvadhanvanā|| tathaiva ca śarān drauṇiḥ pravimuñcannavihvalaḥ| tasthau sa samare rājaṃstrātumicchan mahāvratam||
Those shafts, in that battle, penetrating through the armour of the son of Drona drank his life-blood. But thus pierced by the wielder of the Gandiva-bow Drona's son did not flinch. Discharging similar arrows at the son of Pritha, O king, he stood unwavering in battle, desirous of protecting Bhishma of illustrious vows.

तस्य तत् सुमहत् कर्म शशंसुः कुरुसत्तमाः। यत् कृष्णाभ्यां समेताभ्यामभ्यापतत संयुगे॥ स हि नित्यमनीकेषु युध्यतेऽभयमास्थितः। अस्त्रग्रामं ससंहारं द्रोणात् प्राप्य सुदुर्लभम्॥
tasya tat sumahat karma śaśaṃsuḥ kurusattamāḥ| yat kṛṣṇābhyāṃ sametābhyāmabhyāpatata saṃyuge|| sa hi nityamanīkeṣu yudhyate'bhayamāsthitaḥ| astragrāmaṃ sasaṃhāraṃ droṇāt prāpya sudurlabham||
That great feat of his which consisted in his encountering the two Krishna's together in battle, was greatly applauded by the foremost among the Kurus. Having obtained from Drona various rare weapons together with the method of their withdrawal, he every day undauntedly fought amidst that host.

ममैष आचार्यसुतो द्रोणस्यापि प्रियः सुतः। ब्राह्मणश्च विशेषेण माननीयो ममेति च॥
mamaiṣa ācāryasuto droṇasyāpi priyaḥ sutaḥ| brāhmaṇaśca viśeṣeṇa mānanīyo mameti ca||
This is the son of my preceptor; this is the very dear son of Drona; especially he is a Brahmana, and so worthy of my veneration.

समास्थाय मतिं वीरो बीभत्सुः शत्रुतापनः। कृपां चक्रे रथश्रेष्ठो भारद्वाजसुतं प्रति॥
samāsthāya matiṃ vīro bībhatsuḥ śatrutāpanaḥ| kṛpāṃ cakre rathaśreṣṭho bhāradvājasutaṃ prati||
Thinking thus, that grinder of enemies the brave Bibhatsu (Arjuna) that foremost of carwarriors, showed mercy towards Bharadvaja's son.

द्रौणिं त्यक्त्वा ततौ युद्धे कौन्तेयः श्वेतवाहनः। युयुधे तावकान् निदर्नस्त्वरमाणः पराक्रमीः॥
drauṇiṃ tyaktvā tatau yuddhe kaunteyaḥ śvetavāhanaḥ| yuyudhe tāvakān nidarnastvaramāṇaḥ parākramīḥ||
Thereafter in that encounter leaving alone the son of Drona, Kunti's son (Arjuna) borne by white chargers, endued with great prowess, fought on displaying great lightness of hands and spreading slaughter in the ranks of the enemy.

दुर्योधनस्तु दशभिर्गार्धपत्रैः शिलाशितैः। भीमसेनं महेष्वासं रुक्मपुङ्खः समार्पयत्॥
duryodhanastu daśabhirgārdhapatraiḥ śilāśitaiḥ| bhīmasenaṃ maheṣvāsaṃ rukmapuṅkhaḥ samārpayat||
Duryodhana pierced the mighty bow-man Bhimasena with ten shafts furnished with vulture-feathers and whetted on stone and decked with gold.

भीमसेनः सुसंक्रुद्धः परासुकरणं दृढम्। चित्रं कार्मुकमादत्त शरांश्च निशितान् दश॥
bhīmasenaḥ susaṃkruddhaḥ parāsukaraṇaṃ dṛḍham| citraṃ kārmukamādatta śarāṃśca niśitān daśa||
Excited with wrath, Bhimasena grasped a variegated bow of tough make, capable of depriving the foe of his life, as also ten sharp arrows.

आकर्णप्रहितैस्तीक्ष्णैर्वेगवद्भिरजिह्मगैः। अविध्यत् तूर्णमव्यग्रः कुरुराज महोरसि॥
ākarṇaprahitaistīkṣṇairvegavadbhirajihmagaiḥ| avidhyat tūrṇamavyagraḥ kururāja mahorasi||
Thereafter taking a steady aim with those keen-pointed shafts charged with great energy and fierce impetus, and drawing the bow-string back to his ears, Bhimasena struck home the ruler of the Kurus on his board chest.

तस्य काञ्चनसूत्रस्थः शरैः संछादितो मणिः। रराजोरसि खे सूर्यो ग्रहैरवि समावृतः॥ पुत्रस्तु तव तेजस्वी भीमसेनेन पाडितः। नामृष्यत यथा नागस्तलशब्दं मदोत्कटः॥
tasya kāñcanasūtrasthaḥ śaraiḥ saṃchādito maṇiḥ| rarājorasi khe sūryo grahairavi samāvṛtaḥ|| putrastu tava tejasvī bhīmasenena pāḍitaḥ| nāmṛṣyata yathā nāgastalaśabdaṃ madotkaṭaḥ||
Thereupon the gem that was hanging in the breast of Duryodhana by golden threads, being surrounded by those arrows appeared charming like the sun in the heavens surrounded by the planets. But your son endued with great energy, thus pierced by Bhimasena, did not brook it cooly, like a snake not bearing the sound of the tread of man.

ततः शरैर्महाराज रुक्मपुजैः शिलाशितैः। भीमं विव्याध संक्रुद्धस्त्रासयानो वरूथिनीम्॥
tataḥ śarairmahārāja rukmapujaiḥ śilāśitaiḥ| bhīmaṃ vivyādha saṃkruddhastrāsayāno varūthinīm||
Thereafter inflamed with rage, O king, he pierced Bhima with numerous shafts furnished with golden wings and whetted on stone, with a view to protect his own soldiers.

तौ युध्यमानौ समरे भृशमन्योन्यविक्षतौ। पुत्रौ ते देवसंकाशौ व्यरोचेतां महाबलौ॥
tau yudhyamānau samare bhṛśamanyonyavikṣatau| putrau te devasaṃkāśau vyarocetāṃ mahābalau||
Thus fighting with each other and mangling each other (with shafts) in that battle, those two sons of yours, both endued with great prowess appeared beautiful like two gods.

चित्रसेनं नरव्याघ्रं सौभद्रः परवीरहा। अविध्यद् दशभिर्बाणैः पुरुमित्रं च सप्तभिः॥
citrasenaṃ naravyāghraṃ saubhadraḥ paravīrahā| avidhyad daśabhirbāṇaiḥ purumitraṃ ca saptabhiḥ||
Then that foremost of men, that slayer of hostile heroes namely the son of Subhadra pierced Chitrasena with innumerable short arrows and also Purumitra with seven shafts.

सत्यव्रतं च सप्तत्या विद्ध्वा शक्रसमो युधि। नृत्यन्निव रणे वीर आर्तिं नः समजीजनत्॥
satyavrataṃ ca saptatyā viddhvā śakrasamo yudhi| nṛtyanniva raṇe vīra ārtiṃ naḥ samajījanat||
And that heroic one equal to Shakra himself in battle, piercing Satyavrata with seventy shafts, seemed to dance about on the field causing us much pain,

तं प्रत्यविध्यद् दशभिश्चित्रसेन: शिलीमुखैः। सत्यव्रतश्च नवभिः पुरुमित्रश्च सप्तभिः॥ स विद्धो विक्षरन् रक्तं शत्रुसंवारणं महत्। चिच्छेद चित्रसेनस्य चित्रं कार्मुकमार्जुनिः॥
taṃ pratyavidhyad daśabhiścitrasena: śilīmukhaiḥ| satyavrataśca navabhiḥ purumitraśca saptabhiḥ|| sa viddho vikṣaran raktaṃ śatrusaṃvāraṇaṃ mahat| ciccheda citrasenasya citraṃ kārmukamārjuniḥ||
Chitrasena pierced him in return with ten shafts, Satyavrata with nine, and Purumitra with seven. Thus pierced the son of Arjuna while still shedding blood, severed the beautiful and mighty bow of Chitrasena that was capable to holding the foe at bay.

भित्त्वा चास्य तनुत्राणं शरैणोरस्यताडयत्। ततस्ते तावका वीरा राजपुत्रा महारथाः॥
bhittvā cāsya tanutrāṇaṃ śaraiṇorasyatāḍayat| tataste tāvakā vīrā rājaputrā mahārathāḥ||
Penetrating his coat of mail, Arjuna's son, pierced him with a shaft on the breast. Thereat the heroic princes of your army all mighty carwarriors.

समेत्य युधि संरब्धा विव्यधुनिशितैः शरैः। तांश्च सर्वाशरैस्तीक्ष्णैर्जघान परमास्त्रवित्॥
sametya yudhi saṃrabdhā vivyadhuniśitaiḥ śaraiḥ| tāṃśca sarvāśaraistīkṣṇairjaghāna paramāstravit||
Uniting together, and inflamed with rage, pierced Arjuna's son with numerous keen pointed arrows. But the latter, conversant with excellent weapons, wounded all of them with sharp arrows.

तस्य दृष्ट्वा तु तत् कर्म परिवठ्ठः सुतास्तव। दहन्तं समरे सैन्यं वने कक्षं यथोल्बणम्॥
tasya dṛṣṭvā tu tat karma parivaṭhṭhaḥ sutāstava| dahantaṃ samare sainyaṃ vane kakṣaṃ yatholbaṇam||
Beholding that feat of his, your sons in that battle surrounded him on all sides, who was consuming the warriors of your army.

अपेतशिशिरे काले समिद्धमिव पावकम्। अत्यरोचत सौभद्रस्तव सैन्यानि नाशयन्॥
apetaśiśire kāle samiddhamiva pāvakam| atyarocata saubhadrastava sainyāni nāśayan||
Like a blazing fire consuming a heap of fuel in the summer season. Thus smiting down your soldiers the son of Subhadra appeared highly beautiful.

Beholding those feats of Abhimanyu the son of Subhadra, O king, your grandson Lakshmana speedily faced him desirous of battle.

अभिमन्युस्तु संक्रुद्धो लक्ष्मणं शुभलक्षणम्। विव्याध निशितैः षड्भिः सारथिं च त्रिभिः शरैः।।३३।
abhimanyustu saṃkruddho lakṣmaṇaṃ śubhalakṣaṇam| vivyādha niśitaiḥ ṣaḍbhiḥ sārathiṃ ca tribhiḥ śaraiḥ||33|
Thereupon waxing worth Abhimanyu that mighty car-warrior pierced Lakshmana of auspicious marks and his charioteer, with six well sharpened arrows.

तथैव लक्ष्मणो राजन् सौभद्रं निशितैः शरैः। अविध्यत महाराज तदद्भुतमिवाभवत्॥
tathaiva lakṣmaṇo rājan saubhadraṃ niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ| avidhyata mahārāja tadadbhutamivābhavat||
So also, O king, Lakshmana pierced the son of Subhadra with sharp arrows; and O mighty sovereign, the feat seemed to be marvelous.

तस्याश्वांश्चतुरो हत्वा सारथिं च महाबलः। अभ्यद्रवत सौभद्रो लक्ष्मणं निशितैः शरैः॥
tasyāśvāṃścaturo hatvā sārathiṃ ca mahābalaḥ| abhyadravata saubhadro lakṣmaṇaṃ niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ||
Thereat that mighty car-warrior the son of the Subhadra, slaying the four steeds of Lakshmana, as also his charioteer, rushed at him covering him with sharp shafts.

हताश्वे तु रथे तिष्ठंल्लक्ष्मणः परवीरहा। शक्तिं चिक्षेप संक्रुद्धः सौभद्रस्य रथं प्रति॥
hatāśve tu rathe tiṣṭhaṃllakṣmaṇaḥ paravīrahā| śaktiṃ cikṣepa saṃkruddhaḥ saubhadrasya rathaṃ prati||
Then standing on his chariot of which the steeds were slain, Lakshmana the slayer of inimical heroes, excited with the wrath, hurled a lance aiming at the car of Subhadra's son,

तामापतन्ती सहसा घोररूपां दुरासदाम्। अभिमन्युः शरैस्तीक्ष्णैश्चिच्छेद भुजगोपमाम्॥
tāmāpatantī sahasā ghorarūpāṃ durāsadām| abhimanyuḥ śaraistīkṣṇaiściccheda bhujagopamām||
The Abhimanyu, cut down with his keen pointed arrows, that dreadful and irresistible lances that resembled a snake and that was coursing swiftly toward himself.

ततः स्वरथमारोप्य लक्ष्मणं गौतमस्तदा। अपोवाह रथेनाजौ सर्वसैन्यस्य पश्यतः॥
tataḥ svarathamāropya lakṣmaṇaṃ gautamastadā| apovāha rathenājau sarvasainyasya paśyataḥ||
Thereupon Gautama (Kripa) taking Lakshmana upon his chariot carried him away from the field before the very eyes of the troops.

ततः समाकुले तस्मिन् वर्तमाने महाभये। अभ्यद्रवञ्जिघांसन्तः परस्परवधैषिणः॥
tataḥ samākule tasmin vartamāne mahābhaye| abhyadravañjighāṃsantaḥ parasparavadhaiṣiṇaḥ||
Then in that general and dreadful engagement, the fighters rushed, one against another, smiting one another and desirous of depriving one another of his life.

तावकाश्च महेष्वासाः पाण्डवाश्च महारथाः। जुह्वन्तः समरे प्राणान् निजप्नुरितरेतरम्॥
tāvakāśca maheṣvāsāḥ pāṇḍavāśca mahārathāḥ| juhvantaḥ samare prāṇān nijapnuritaretaram||
The mighty-bowmen of your army and the mighty car-warrior of the Pandava host, all ready to lay down their lives in battle, began to slay one another.

मुक्तकेशा विकवचा विरथाश्छिन्नकार्मुकाः। बाहुभिः समयुध्यन्त संजयाः कुरुभिः सह॥
muktakeśā vikavacā virathāśchinnakārmukāḥ| bāhubhiḥ samayudhyanta saṃjayāḥ kurubhiḥ saha||
Having disheveled hair, deprived of their armours shorn of their cars, and with their bows served, the Srinjaya fought on with their bare arms.

ततो भीष्मो महाबाहुः पाण्डवानां महात्मनाम्। सेनां जघान संक्रुद्धो दिव्यैरस्त्रैर्महाबलः॥
tato bhīṣmo mahābāhuḥ pāṇḍavānāṃ mahātmanām| senāṃ jaghāna saṃkruddho divyairastrairmahābalaḥ||
Then the mighty armed Bhishma endued with great strength waxing worth began to slay with weapons of celestial mace, the Pandavas of high-soul.

हतैरश्वैर्गजैस्तत्र नरैरश्चैश्च पातितः। रथिभिः सादिभिश्चैव समास्तीर्यत मेदिनी॥
hatairaśvairgajaistatra narairaścaiśca pātitaḥ| rathibhiḥ sādibhiścaiva samāstīryata medinī||
In that battle, the earth was then strewn our with the corpses and falling bodies of carwarriors, cavalry-soldiers, men, and horses and of elephants deprived of their guides.
