MBh 4 41.1

श्रीभगवानुवाच अभयं सत्त्वसंशुद्धिर्ज्ञानयोगव्यवस्थितिः। दानं दमश्च यज्ञश्च स्वाध्यायस्तप आर्जवम्॥

śrībhagavānuvāca abhayaṃ sattvasaṃśuddhirjñānayogavyavasthitiḥ| dānaṃ damaśca yajñaśca svādhyāyastapa ārjavam||

The great one said Fearlessness, purity of heart, perseverance, Yoga meditation, gifts, self restraint, sacrifice, study of the Vedas, penances, uprightness.

MBh 4 41.2

अहिंसां सत्यमक्रोधस्त्यागः शान्तिरपैशुनम्। दया भूतेष्वलोलुप्त्वं मार्दवं ह्रीरचापलम्॥

ahiṃsāṃ satyamakrodhastyāgaḥ śāntirapaiśunam| dayā bhūteṣvaloluptvaṃ mārdavaṃ hrīracāpalam||

Non-doing of injury, truth, freedom from anger, renunciation, tranquility, freedom from fault-finding, compassion for all, absence of covetousness, gentleness, modesty, absence of restlessness.

MBh 4 41.3

तेजः क्षमाः धृतिः शौचमद्रोहो नातिमानिता। भवन्ति सम्पदं दैवीमभिजातस्य भारत॥

tejaḥ kṣamāḥ dhṛtiḥ śaucamadroho nātimānitā| bhavanti sampadaṃ daivīmabhijātasya bhārata||

Vigor, forgiveness, firmness, cleanliness, absence of quarrel sameness, freedom from vanity, O Bharata, all these belong to him who is god-like.

MBh 4 41.4

दम्भो दर्पोऽभिमानश्च क्रोधः पारुष्यमेव च। अज्ञानं चाभिजातस्य पार्थ सम्पदमासुरीम्॥

dambho darpo'bhimānaśca krodhaḥ pāruṣyameva ca| ajñānaṃ cābhijātasya pārtha sampadamāsurīm||

Hypocrisy, pride, conceit, wrath, rudeness, and ignorance, O Partha, belong to him who is demoniac.

MBh 4 41.5

दैवी सम्पद् विमोक्षाय निबन्धायासुरी मता। मा शुचः सम्पदं दैवीमभिजातोऽसि पाण्डव॥

daivī sampad vimokṣāya nibandhāyāsurī matā| mā śucaḥ sampadaṃ daivīmabhijāto'si pāṇḍava||

Godliness is considered to be the means for emancipation, and demoniacness for bondage of births. You need not grieve, O son of Pandu, for Dushasana you are born to be god-like.

द्वौ भूतस! लोकेऽस्मिन् दैव आसुर एव च। दैवो विस्तरशः प्रोक्त आसुरं पार्थ मे शृणु॥ प्रवृत्तिं च निवृत्तिं च जना न विदुरासुराः। न शौचं नापि चाचारो न सत्यं तेषु विद्यते॥

dvau bhūtasa! loke'smin daiva āsura eva ca| daivo vistaraśaḥ prokta āsuraṃ pārtha me śṛṇu|| pravṛttiṃ ca nivṛttiṃ ca janā na vidurāsurāḥ| na śaucaṃ nāpi cācāro na satyaṃ teṣu vidyate||

There are two kinds of created beings in this world, namely God-like and demoniac. The God-like has been fully described by me. Now hear from me, Partha, something of the demoniac. Persons of demoniac nature know now what is action and what is inaction. Neither purity, nor good conduct, nor truth exists in them.

MBh 4 41.7

असत्यमप्रतिष्ठं ते जगदाहुरनीश्वरम्। अपरस्परसम्भूतं किमन्यत् कामहैतुकम्॥

asatyamapratiṣṭhaṃ te jagadāhuranīśvaram| aparasparasambhūtaṃ kimanyat kāmahaitukam||

The demoniac say, the universe is void of truth, of a guiding principle and of a ruler. They say universe has been produced only by the union of one another and by lust.

एतां दृष्टिमवष्टभ्य नष्टात्मानोऽल्पबुद्धयः। प्रभवन्त्युग्रकर्माणः क्षयाय जगतोऽहिताः॥

etāṃ dṛṣṭimavaṣṭabhya naṣṭātmāno'lpabuddhayaḥ| prabhavantyugrakarmāṇaḥ kṣayāya jagato'hitāḥ||

Believing and demanding on this, these men of lost self, of little intelligence, and of fearful deeds, these enemies of the world, are born for the destruction of the piety of the universe.

काममाश्रित्य दुष्पुरं दम्भमानमदान्विताः। मोहाद् गृहीत्वासद्ग्राहान् प्रवर्तन्तेऽशुचिव्रताः॥

kāmamāśritya duṣpuraṃ dambhamānamadānvitāḥ| mohād gṛhītvāsadgrāhān pravartante'śucivratāḥ||

Being endued with hypocrisy, conceit and folly, and cherishing insatiable desires, they believe in false things, and perform sinful practices.

चिन्तामपरिमेयां च प्रलयान्तामुपाश्रिताः। कामोपभोगपरमा एतावदिति निश्चिताः॥

cintāmaparimeyāṃ ca pralayāntāmupāśritāḥ| kāmopabhogaparamā etāvaditi niścitāḥ||

Cherishing boundless thoughts which are limited by death only and considering the enjoyment of their desires as the highest aim of life, they believe that this is all.

आशापाशशतैर्बद्धाः कामक्रोधपरायणाः। ईहन्ते कामभोगार्थमन्यायेनार्थसंचयान्॥

āśāpāśaśatairbaddhāḥ kāmakrodhaparāyaṇāḥ| īhante kāmabhogārthamanyāyenārthasaṃcayān||

Bound in hundred nooses of Hope, and addicted to lust and wrath, they eagerly desire to possess unfair hoards of wealth, so that they may gratify their desire.

MBh 4 41.12

इदमद्य मया लब्धमिमं प्राप्स्ये मनोरथम्। इदमस्तीदमपि मे भविष्यति पुनर्धनम्॥

idamadya mayā labdhamimaṃ prāpsye manoratham| idamastīdamapi me bhaviṣyati punardhanam||

This is obtained today by Me-I shall obtain this to-morrow, I have this wealth, this wealth again will be mine in addition to what I already possess.

असौ मया हतः शत्रुर्हनिष्ये चापरानपि। ईश्वरोऽहमहं भोगी सिद्धोऽहं बलवान्सुखी॥

asau mayā hataḥ śatrurhaniṣye cāparānapi| īśvaro'hamahaṃ bhogī siddho'haṃ balavānsukhī||

This enemy of mine has been killed by me, I shall kill other enemies also, I am the lord, I am the enjoyed, I am successful, I am powerful and happy.

आढ्योऽभिजनवानस्मि कोऽन्योऽस्ति सदृशो मया। अक्ष्ये दास्यामि मोदिष्य इत्यज्ञानविमोहिताः॥

āḍhyo'bhijanavānasmi ko'nyo'sti sadṛśo mayā| akṣye dāsyāmi modiṣya ityajñānavimohitāḥ||

I am wealthy, I am nobly born, who is there in this world as I am, I shall sacrifice, I shall make gifts, I shall be merry, (thus say the demoniac), deluded by ignorance.

अनेकचित्तविभ्रान्ता मोहजालसमावृताः। प्रसक्ताः कामभोगेषु पतन्ति नरकेऽशुचौ॥

anekacittavibhrāntā mohajālasamāvṛtāḥ| prasaktāḥ kāmabhogeṣu patanti narake'śucau||

Tossed about by innumerable thoughts, enveloped by delusion, and attached to the enjoyment of desire, these men sink into the lowliest hell.

MBh 4 41.16

आत्मसम्भाविताः स्तब्धा धनमानमदान्विताः। यजयन्ते नामयज्ञैस्ते दम्भेनाविधिपूर्वकम्॥

ātmasambhāvitāḥ stabdhā dhanamānamadānvitāḥ| yajayante nāmayajñaiste dambhenāvidhipūrvakam||

These men, being self conceited, stubborn, and full of pride and intoxication of wealth, perform Sacrifices, that are nominal, that rest on hypocrisy, and do not follow the prescribed rules.

MBh 4 41.17

अहंकारं बलं दर्प कामं क्रोधं च संश्रिताः। मामात्मपरदेहेषु प्रद्विषन्तोऽभ्यसूयकाः॥

ahaṃkāraṃ balaṃ darpa kāmaṃ krodhaṃ ca saṃśritāḥ| māmātmaparadeheṣu pradviṣanto'bhyasūyakāḥ||

These men, the servitors, being full of vanity, power, pride, lust and wrath, hate Me in their own bodies as well as in those of others.

MBh 4 41.18

तानहं द्विषतः क्रूरान् संसारेषु नराधमान्। क्षिपाम्यजस्रमशुभानासुरीष्वेव योनिषु॥

tānahaṃ dviṣataḥ krūrān saṃsāreṣu narādhamān| kṣipāmyajasramaśubhānāsurīṣveva yoniṣu||

These cruel heaters of Me, these sinful, vilest men among men, are hurled continually down by Me into demoniac wombs (to be demoniac in their next births).

MBh 4 41.19

आसुरीं योनिमापन्ना मूढा जन्मनि जन्मनि। मामप्राप्यैव कौन्तेय ततो यान्त्यधमा गतिम्॥

āsurīṃ yonimāpannā mūḍhā janmani janmani| māmaprāpyaiva kaunteya tato yāntyadhamā gatim||

O son of Kunti, these men, taking births into demoniac womb, deluded birth after birth, ge down to the vilest state.

MBh 4 41.20

त्रिविधं नरकस्येदं द्वारं नाशनमात्मनः। काम: क्रोधस्तथा लोभस्तस्मादेतत् त्रयं त्यजेत्॥

trividhaṃ narakasyedaṃ dvāraṃ nāśanamātmanaḥ| kāma: krodhastathā lobhastasmādetat trayaṃ tyajet||

Threefold is the way to hell, ever ruinous to self, namely, lust, and avarice. Therefore, one should, above all, renounces these three.

MBh 4 41.21

एतैर्विमुक्तः कौन्तेय तमोद्वारैस्त्रिभिर्नरः। आचरत्यात्मनः श्रेयस्ततो याति परां गतिम्॥

etairvimuktaḥ kaunteya tamodvāraistribhirnaraḥ| ācaratyātmanaḥ śreyastato yāti parāṃ gatim||

Being freed from these three gates of darkness, O son of Kunti, a man works out his own good. He then reaches the highest goal.

MBh 4 41.22

यः शास्त्रविधिमुत्सृज्य वर्तते कामकारतः। न स सिद्धिमवाप्नोति न सुखं न परां गतिम्॥

yaḥ śāstravidhimutsṛjya vartate kāmakārataḥ| na sa siddhimavāpnoti na sukhaṃ na parāṃ gatim||

He who renounces the ordinance of the Vedas, acts only under the impulse of desire. Such a man can never attain to perfection, happiness, or the highest goal.

तस्माच्छास्त्रं प्रमाण ते कार्याकार्यव्यवस्थितौ। ज्ञात्वा शास्त्रविधानोक्तं कर्म कर्तुमिहार्हसि॥

tasmācchāstraṃ pramāṇa te kāryākāryavyavasthitau| jñātvā śāstravidhānoktaṃ karma kartumihārhasi||

Therefore, the Vedas should be your authority in determining what you should do and what you should not do. It is your duty to work in this world, having ascertained what are the ordinances of the Vedas”.
