Mahabharata — Volume III (Dutt edition) — Chapter 76
MBh 3 76.1
dupada uvāca evametanmahābāho bhaviṣyati na saṃśayaḥ| na hi duryodhano rājyaṃ madhureṇa pradāsyati||
Drupada said O you with long arms, it will doubtless turn out as you have said. Duryodhana will not give back the kingdom by peaceful means.
— tr. M.N. Dutt (1891–96) (public domain)
MBh 3 76.2
anuvaya̭ti taṃ cāpi dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ sutapriyaḥ| bhīṣmadroṇau ca kārpaṇyānmād rādheyasaubalau||
And Dhritarashtra, fond of his son, will follow him. So will Bhima and Drona out of a false regard for the kingdom and the two sons of Subala out of folly.
— tr. M.N. Dutt (1891–96) (public domain)
MBh 3 76.3
baladevasya vākyaṃ tu mama jñāne na yujyate| etaddhi puruṣeṇāre kāryaṃ sunayamicchatā||
In my opinion the suggestion of Baladeva is not appropriate; it can certainly be acted on by a man who is desirous of an amicable settlement.
— tr. M.N. Dutt (1891–96) (public domain)
MBh 3 76.4
na tu vācyo mṛduvaco dhārtarāṣṭraḥ kathaṃcana| na hi mārdavasādhyo'sau pāpabuddhirmato mama||
The son of Dhritarashtra ought by no means to be addressed to in a conciliatory tone; I think that it is impossible to bring the illmatured Duryodhana to reason by peaceful means.
— tr. M.N. Dutt (1891–96) (public domain)
MBh 3 76.5
gardabhe mārdavaṃ kuryād goṣu tīkṣṇaṃ samācaret| mṛdu duryodhane vākyaṃ yo brūyāt pāpacetasi|| mṛduṃ vai manyate pāpo bhāṣamāṇamaśaktikam| jitama) vijānīyādabudho mārdave sati||
Peaceful means should be adopted for asses; but severe measures should be resorted to for kines. He who uses mild words to the illhearted Duryodhana would be set down as an incapable man by that vicious one and if a mild course is adopted the fool will think himself to have won.
— tr. M.N. Dutt (1891–96) (public domain)
MBh 3 76.6
etaccaiva kariṣyāmo yatnaśca kriyatāmiha| prasthāpayāma mitrebhyo balānyudyojayantu naḥ||
We shall do this; let us make preparations here and send word to our friends to collect armies for us.
— tr. M.N. Dutt (1891–96) (public domain)

sa ca duryodhano nūnaṃ preṣayiṣyati sarvaśaḥ| pūrvābhipannāḥ santaśca bhajante pūrvacodanam||
Duryodhana, too will certainly send his messenger to all places and good men attend to those who send word first and who ask for help first.

tat tvaradhvaṃ narendrāṇāṃ pūrvameva pracodane| mahaddhi kāryaṃ voḍhavyamiti me vartate matiḥ||
Make haste, therefore, in first sending words to this kings among men. I think that some great event is about to come.
