उत्तर उवाच अस्मिन् वृक्षे किलोद्वद्धं शरीरमिति नः श्रुतम्। तदहं राजपुत्रः सन् स्पृशेयं पाणिना कथम्॥
uttara uvāca asmin vṛkṣe kilodvaddhaṃ śarīramiti naḥ śrutam| tadahaṃ rājaputraḥ san spṛśeyaṃ pāṇinā katham||
Uttara said It is heard that a corpse is tie to the tree. How can I, being a prince, touch it with my own hands.

नैवंविधं मया युक्तमालब्धु क्षत्रयोनिना। महता राजपुत्रेण मन्त्रयज्ञविदा सता॥
naivaṃvidhaṃ mayā yuktamālabdhu kṣatrayoninā| mahatā rājaputreṇa mantrayajñavidā satā||
To touch it does not become me who am born in the Kshatriya race, a mighty prince and observant of Mantras and vows.

स्पृष्टवन्तं शरीरं मां शववाहमिवाशुचिम्। कथं वा व्यवहार्यं वै कुर्वीथास्त्वं बृहन्नले॥
spṛṣṭavantaṃ śarīraṃ māṃ śavavāhamivāśucim| kathaṃ vā vyavahāryaṃ vai kurvīthāstvaṃ bṛhannale||
Why should you, O Brihannala, make my body sullied and unclean by making me touch this corpse?

बृहन्नलोवाच व्यवहार्यश्च राजेन्द्र शुचिश्चैव भविष्यसि। धनूंष्येतानि मा भैस्त्वं शरीरं नात्र विद्यते॥
bṛhannalovāca vyavahāryaśca rājendra śuciścaiva bhaviṣyasi| dhanūṃṣyetāni mā bhaistvaṃ śarīraṃ nātra vidyate||
Brihannala said You shall remain clean and unpolluted, O foremost of kings. Fear not, there are only bows on this tree and not a corpse.

दायादं मत्स्यराजस्य कुले जातं मनस्विनाम्। त्वां कथं निन्दितं कर्म कारयेयं नृपात्मज॥
dāyādaṃ matsyarājasya kule jātaṃ manasvinām| tvāṃ kathaṃ ninditaṃ karma kārayeyaṃ nṛpātmaja||
O prince, why should I make you do a cursed deed, born as you are of a noble family and a heir to the king of Matsya's.

वैशम्पायन उवाच एवमुक्तः स पार्थेन रथात् प्रस्कन्द्य कुण्डली। आरुरोह शमीवृक्षं वैराटिरवशस्तदा॥
vaiśampāyana uvāca evamuktaḥ sa pārthena rathāt praskandya kuṇḍalī| āruroha śamīvṛkṣaṃ vairāṭiravaśastadā||
Thus addressed by Partha, Virata's son, adorned with ear-rings, got down from the car and climbed up the Shami tree unwillingly.

तमन्वशासच्छत्रुनो रथे तिष्ठन् धनंजयः। अवरोपय वृक्षाग्राद् धनूंष्येतानि मा चिरम्॥
tamanvaśāsacchatruno rathe tiṣṭhan dhanaṃjayaḥ| avaropaya vṛkṣāgrād dhanūṃṣyetāni mā ciram||
Dhananjaya, the slayer of enemies, waiting on the car, ordered him:-“Quickly bring down those bows from the top of the tree."

परिवेष्टनमेतेषां क्षिप्रं चैव व्यपानुदा सोऽपहृत्य महार्हाणि धनूंषि पृथुवक्षसाम्। परिवेष्टनपत्राणि विमुच्य समुपानयत्॥ तथा संनहनान्येषां परिमुच्य समन्ततः।
pariveṣṭanameteṣāṃ kṣipraṃ caiva vyapānudā so'pahṛtya mahārhāṇi dhanūṃṣi pṛthuvakṣasām| pariveṣṭanapatrāṇi vimucya samupānayat|| tathā saṃnahanānyeṣāṃ parimucya samantataḥ|
Cut off soon the wrappers of all these. Cutting off the covering and the ropes with which they were tied on all sides he brought those valuable bows having spacious rods.

अपश्यद् गाण्डिवं तत्र चतुर्भिरपरैः सह॥ तेषां विमुच्यमानानां धनुषामर्कवर्चसाम्। विनिश्चेरुः प्रभा दिव्या ग्रहाणामुदयेष्विव॥ स तेषां रूपमालोक्य भोगिनामिव जृम्भताम्। हृष्टरोमा भयोद्विग्नः क्षणेन समपद्यत॥ संस्पृश्य तानि चापानि भानुमन्ति बृहन्ति च। वैरारिर्जुनं राजन्निदं वचनमब्रवीत्॥
apaśyad gāṇḍivaṃ tatra caturbhiraparaiḥ saha|| teṣāṃ vimucyamānānāṃ dhanuṣāmarkavarcasām| viniśceruḥ prabhā divyā grahāṇāmudayeṣviva|| sa teṣāṃ rūpamālokya bhogināmiva jṛmbhatām| hṛṣṭaromā bhayodvignaḥ kṣaṇena samapadyata|| saṃspṛśya tāni cāpāni bhānumanti bṛhanti ca| vairārirjunaṃ rājannidaṃ vacanamabravīt||
He saw there Gandiva along with four other bows. The celestials effulgence of these bows resplendent like the rays of the sun, when got out, appeared like that of the planet at the time of rising. Beholding their forms like sighing snakes he, in time, overwhelmed with fear and the hairs of his body stood on ends. Then touching those huge and mighty lustrous bows Virata's son said to Arjuna. no was
