नारद उवाच प्रत्यभिज्ञातमात्रोऽथ सद्भिस्तैर्नरपुङ्गवः। समारोह नृपतिरस्पृशन् वसुधातलम्। ययातिर्दिव्यसंस्थानो बभूव विगतज्वरः॥

nārada uvāca pratyabhijñātamātro'tha sadbhistairnarapuṅgavaḥ| samāroha nṛpatiraspṛśan vasudhātalam| yayātirdivyasaṃsthāno babhūva vigatajvaraḥ||

Narada said The moment he was recognized by those good men, those foremost among human beings, that ruler of men went up again without touching the surface of the earth, and Yayati being freed from all his troubles again got his place in heaven.

दिव्यमाल्याम्बरधरो दिव्याभरणभूषितः। दिव्यगन्धगुणोपेतो न पृथ्वीमस्पृशत् पदा॥

divyamālyāmbaradharo divyābharaṇabhūṣitaḥ| divyagandhaguṇopeto na pṛthvīmaspṛśat padā||

Bedecked with heavenly garlands, clothed in heaven raiment and putting on heavenly ornaments and with heavenly perfumes and endued with heavenly qualities he did not even touch the earth with his feet.

ततो वसुमनाः पूर्वमुच्चैरुच्चारयन् वचः। ख्यातो दानपतिलेकि व्याजहार नृपं तदा॥

tato vasumanāḥ pūrvamuccairuccārayan vacaḥ| khyāto dānapatileki vyājahāra nṛpaṃ tadā||

Then did Vasumanas, renowned in this world as the foremost among givers, first uttering these words in a loud voice said to the king.

प्राप्तवानस्मि यल्लोके सर्वर्णेष्वगहया। तदप्यथ च दास्यामि तेन संयुज्यतां भवान्॥

prāptavānasmi yalloke sarvarṇeṣvagahayā| tadapyatha ca dāsyāmi tena saṃyujyatāṃ bhavān||

"The merit that I have earned in this world by my conduct towards all the castes, which can not be found fault with, that too I give you and may you earn that.

यत् फलं दानशीलस्य क्षमाशीलस्य यत् फलम्। यच्च मे फलमाधाने तेन संयुज्यतां भवान्॥

yat phalaṃ dānaśīlasya kṣamāśīlasya yat phalam| yacca me phalamādhāne tena saṃyujyatāṃ bhavān||

The merit that is earned by one who is attached to liberality and the merit that is earned by one who exercises forgiveness and the merit that I have by my sacrificial ceremonies-may you earn all that.”

ततः प्रतर्दनोऽप्याह वाक्यं क्षत्रियपुङ्गवः। यथा धर्मरतिनित्यं नित्यं युद्धपरायणः॥

tataḥ pratardano'pyāha vākyaṃ kṣatriyapuṅgavaḥ| yathā dharmaratinityaṃ nityaṃ yuddhaparāyaṇaḥ||

Then did that foremost among the Kshatriyas, Pratardana too, ever attached to virtue and given to war, said:

प्राप्तवानस्मि यल्लोके क्षत्रवंशोद्भवं यशः। वीरशब्दफलं चैव तेन संयुज्यतां भवान्॥

prāptavānasmi yalloke kṣatravaṃśodbhavaṃ yaśaḥ| vīraśabdaphalaṃ caiva tena saṃyujyatāṃ bhavān||

“The farne that I have gained in this world, and which is due to my being born in the Kshatriya order, the merit earned by me for being called a hero-is all yours.”

शिबिरौशीनरो धीमानुवाच मधुरां गिरम्। यथा बालेषु नारीषु वैहार्येषु तथैव च॥

śibirauśīnaro dhīmānuvāca madhurāṃ giram| yathā bāleṣu nārīṣu vaihāryeṣu tathaiva ca||

The wise Shibi, the son of Ushinara, then said in a sweet voice Since, to children, or women, as also to those who might be cracked jokes with,

संगरेषु निपातेषु तथा तद्व्यसनेषु च। अनृतं नोक्तपूर्वं मे तेन सत्येन खं व्रज॥

saṃgareṣu nipāteṣu tathā tadvyasaneṣu ca| anṛtaṃ noktapūrvaṃ me tena satyena khaṃ vraja||

To those who are in danger, to those engaged in a game of dice, as also to those who are suffering from grief and calamities I have never before said a falsehood, by virtue of that truth, wander about in heaven.

यथा प्राणांश्च राज्यं च राजन् कामसुखानि च। त्यजेयं न पुनः सत्यं तेन सत्येन खं व्रज॥

yathā prāṇāṃśca rājyaṃ ca rājan kāmasukhāni ca| tyajeyaṃ na punaḥ satyaṃ tena satyena khaṃ vraja||

I can abandon my life, my kingdom as also all luxuries and objects of desire but not truth, by that do you wander about in heaven.

यथा सत्येन मे धर्मो यथा सत्येन पावकः। प्रीत: शतक्रतुश्चैव तेन सत्येन खं व्रज॥

yathā satyena me dharmo yathā satyena pāvakaḥ| prīta: śatakratuścaiva tena satyena khaṃ vraja||

The truth by which Dharma, the truth by which Agni and the truth by which the performer of a hundred sacrifices has been gratified by me-by virtue of that truth wander about in heaven.

अष्टकस्त्वथ राजर्षिः कौशिको माधवीसुतः। अनेकशतयज्वानं नाहुषं प्राप्य धर्मवित्॥

aṣṭakastvatha rājarṣiḥ kauśiko mādhavīsutaḥ| anekaśatayajvānaṃ nāhuṣaṃ prāpya dharmavit||

And the royal Rishi Ashtaka too, the son of Madhvi, by the son of Kushika, conversant with virtue, addressing the son of Nahusha who had performed many hundreds of sacrifices, said:

शतशः पुण्डरीका मे गोसवाश्चरिताः प्रभो। क्रतवो वाजपेयाश्च तेषां फलमवाप्नुहि॥

śataśaḥ puṇḍarīkā me gosavāścaritāḥ prabho| kratavo vājapeyāśca teṣāṃ phalamavāpnuhi||

"O Lord the sacrificial rites Pundarika, Gosava and Vajapeya have been performed by me by hundreds; get the merits of these.

न मे रत्नानि न धनं न तथाऽन्ये परिच्छदाः। क्रतुष्वनुपयुक्तानि तेन सत्येन खं व्रज॥

na me ratnāni na dhanaṃ na tathā'nye paricchadāḥ| kratuṣvanupayuktāni tena satyena khaṃ vraja||

I have not considered gems nor wealth, nor sort riches too much for the performance of my sacrifices (that is I have not spared them); by virtue of that truth, do you wander about in heaven."

यथा यथा हि जल्पन्ति दौहित्रास्तं नराधिपम्। तथा तथा वसुमतीं त्यक्त्वा राजा दिवं ययौ।॥

yathā yathā hi jalpanti dauhitrāstaṃ narādhipam| tathā tathā vasumatīṃ tyaktvā rājā divaṃ yayau|||

As one by one his grandsons addressed that ruler of men, so by degrees the king went up to the heaven leaving below the earth.

एवं सर्वे समस्तैस्ते राजानः सुकृतैस्तदा। ययाति स्वर्गतो भ्रष्टं तारयामासुरञ्जसा॥

evaṃ sarve samastaiste rājānaḥ sukṛtaistadā| yayāti svargato bhraṣṭaṃ tārayāmāsurañjasā||

By this means did all those kings by their good deeds easily save Yayati, who had been turned out from heaven, at that time.

दोहित्राः स्वेन धर्मेण यज्ञदानकृतेन वै। चतुर्षु राजवंशेषु सम्भूताः कुलवर्धनाः। मातामहं महाप्राज्ञं दिवमारोपयन्त ते॥

dohitrāḥ svena dharmeṇa yajñadānakṛtena vai| caturṣu rājavaṃśeṣu sambhūtāḥ kulavardhanāḥ| mātāmahaṃ mahāprājñaṃ divamāropayanta te||

The four grandsons, born in four royal families, and each the perpetuator of a race, sent back by their own virtue, by the sacrificial rites performed by them and gifts made by them, their wise grandfather to heaven.

राजान ऊचुः राजधर्मगुणोपेताः सर्वधर्मगुणान्विताः। दोहित्रास्ते वयं राजन् दिवमारोह पार्थिव॥

rājāna ūcuḥ rājadharmaguṇopetāḥ sarvadharmaguṇānvitāḥ| dohitrāste vayaṃ rājan divamāroha pārthiva||

The kings said O king, we are your grandsons endued with kingly virtues and with all virtues and accomplishments; ascend heaven, O ruler of men.
