वैशम्पायन उवाच तस्यां रात्र्यां व्यतीतायांधर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः। उत्थायावश्यकार्याणि कृतवान् भ्रातृभिः सह॥
vaiśampāyana uvāca tasyāṃ rātryāṃ vyatītāyāṃdharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ| utthāyāvaśyakāryāṇi kṛtavān bhrātṛbhiḥ saha||
Vaishampayana said : The night being spent, Yudhishthira, the foremost of the virtuous awoke and performed the necessary duties together with his brothers.

ततः संचोदयामास सोऽर्जुनं भ्रातृनन्दनम्। दर्शयास्त्राणि कौन्तेय यैर्जिता दानवास्त्वया॥
tataḥ saṃcodayāmāsa so'rjunaṃ bhrātṛnandanam| darśayāstrāṇi kaunteya yairjitā dānavāstvayā||
Then he (Yudhishthira) said to Arjuna, the joy of his mother, “O son of Kunti, show me the weapons whereby you destroyed the Danavas."

ततोधनंजयो राजन् देवैर्दत्तानि पाण्डवः। अस्त्राणि तानि दिव्यानि दर्शयामास भारत॥
tatodhanaṃjayo rājan devairdattāni pāṇḍavaḥ| astrāṇi tāni divyāni darśayāmāsa bhārata||
Thereupon, O king, O Bharata, the Pandava, Arjuna showed those celestials weapons granted (to him) by the god,

यथान्यायं महातेजा; शौचं परममास्थितः। गिरिकूबरपादाक्षं शुभवेणु त्रिवेणुमत्॥ पार्थिवं रथमास्थाय शोभमानोधनंजयः। दिव्येन संवृतस्तेन कवचेन सुवर्चसा॥
yathānyāyaṃ mahātejā; śaucaṃ paramamāsthitaḥ| girikūbarapādākṣaṃ śubhaveṇu triveṇumat|| pārthivaṃ rathamāsthāya śobhamānodhanaṃjayaḥ| divyena saṃvṛtastena kavacena suvarcasā||
(And) duly observing the purificatory rites, the highly-energetic Dhananjaya, seated on the earth as (his) car, having the mountain for its pole, the base of the mountain for its axle and the cluster of beautiful bamboo trees for its socket pole and clad in that celestials mail of great splendour, looked (highly) beautiful.

धनुरादाय गाण्डीवं देवदत्तं स वारिजम्। शोशुभ्यमान: कौन्तेय आनुपूर्व्यान्महाभुजः॥ अस्त्राणि तानि दिव्यानि दर्शनायोपचक्रमे। अथ प्रयोक्ष्यमाणेषु दिव्येष्वस्त्रेषु तेषु वै॥
dhanurādāya gāṇḍīvaṃ devadattaṃ sa vārijam| śośubhyamāna: kaunteya ānupūrvyānmahābhujaḥ|| astrāṇi tāni divyāni darśanāyopacakrame| atha prayokṣyamāṇeṣu divyeṣvastreṣu teṣu vai||
(And)o son of Kunti, the handsome (Dhananjaya) of mighty arms, holding (in his hand) the bow Gandiva, together with the conch presented to him by the celestials, was about to exhibit in due order those celestials weapons. (But) As he commenced to display those heavenly weapons,

समाक्रान्ता मही पद्भ्यां समकम्पत सदुमा। क्षुभिताः सरितश्चैव तथैव च महोदधिः॥
samākrāntā mahī padbhyāṃ samakampata sadumā| kṣubhitāḥ saritaścaiva tathaiva ca mahodadhiḥ||
The earth, being oppressed by the weight of his feet, began to tremble together with all its trees and the rivers and the mighty ocean became troubled.

शैलाथापि व्यदीर्यन्त न ववौ च समीरणः। न बभासे सहस्रांशुर्न जज्वाल च पावकः॥
śailāthāpi vyadīryanta na vavau ca samīraṇaḥ| na babhāse sahasrāṃśurna jajvāla ca pāvakaḥ||
The mountain were rent, the wind ceased to blow, the sun ceased to shine, the fire did not burn,

न वेदाः प्रतिभान्ति स्म द्विजातीनां कथंचन। अन्तर्भूमिगता ये च प्राणिनो जनमेजय॥
na vedāḥ pratibhānti sma dvijātīnāṃ kathaṃcana| antarbhūmigatā ye ca prāṇino janamejaya||
And the twice-born (Brahmanas) could by no means recite the Vedas. And O Janamejaya, the creatures inhabiting the entrails of the earth,

पीड्यमानाः समुत्थाय पाण्डवं पर्यवारयन्। वेपमानाः प्राञ्जलयस्ते सर्वे विकृताननाः॥
pīḍyamānāḥ samutthāya pāṇḍavaṃ paryavārayan| vepamānāḥ prāñjalayaste sarve vikṛtānanāḥ||
Being (sore) oppressed, rose up and with distorted countenances and joined hands and trembling (with fear), surrounded the Pandava (Arjuna).

दह्यमानास्तदास्त्रैस्ते याचन्ति स्मधनंजयम्। ततो ब्रह्मर्षयश्चैव सिद्धा ये च महर्षयः॥
dahyamānāstadāstraiste yācanti smadhanaṃjayam| tato brahmarṣayaścaiva siddhā ye ca maharṣayaḥ||
And scorched by those (celestials) weapons they prayed to Dhananjaya (to spare their lives). Then the Brahmarshis, the Siddhas, the Maharshis,

जङ्गमानि च भूतानि सर्वाण्येवावतस्थिरे। देवर्षयश्च प्रवरास्तथैव च दिवौकसः॥
jaṅgamāni ca bhūtāni sarvāṇyevāvatasthire| devarṣayaśca pravarāstathaiva ca divaukasaḥ||
And the mobile beings-all these creatures arrived there. The most exalted Devarshis, the celestials,

यक्षराक्षसगन्धर्वास्तथैव च पतत्रिणः। खेचराणि च भूतानि सर्वाण्येवावतस्थिरे॥
yakṣarākṣasagandharvāstathaiva ca patatriṇaḥ| khecarāṇi ca bhūtāni sarvāṇyevāvatasthire||
The Yakshas, the Rakshasas, the Gandharvas, the feathery creatures, the skyranging creatures-all these beings appeared (on the scene).

ततः पितामहश्चैव लोकपालाश्च सर्वशः। भगवांश्च महादेवः सगणोऽभ्याययौ तदा॥
tataḥ pitāmahaścaiva lokapālāśca sarvaśaḥ| bhagavāṃśca mahādevaḥ sagaṇo'bhyāyayau tadā||
Then Pitamaha (Brahma), all the Lokapalas (the guardians of the ten cardinal points), the divine Mahadeva, together with all their followers, made their appearance (at that spot).

ततो वायुमहाराज दिव्यैर्माल्यैः सुगन्धिभिः। अभितः पाण्डवं चित्ररवचक्रे समन्ततः॥
tato vāyumahārāja divyairmālyaiḥ sugandhibhiḥ| abhitaḥ pāṇḍavaṃ citraravacakre samantataḥ||
(And) then, O mighty monarch, Vayu (the wind-god) bearing bearing variegated celestials flowers, began to strew them all around the Pandava (Arjuna).

जगुश्च गाथा विविधा गन्धर्वाः सुरचोदिताः। ननृतुः सङ्घशश्चैव राजन्नप्सरसां गणाः॥
jaguśca gāthā vividhā gandharvāḥ suracoditāḥ| nanṛtuḥ saṅghaśaścaiva rājannapsarasāṃ gaṇāḥ||
O king, commissioned by the gods, the Gandharvas sang various melodies and multitudes of Apsaras danced there.

तस्मिंश्च तादृशे काले नारदचोदितः सुरैः। आगम्याह वचः पार्थं श्रवणीयमिदं नृप॥
tasmiṃśca tādṛśe kāle nāradacoditaḥ suraiḥ| āgamyāha vacaḥ pārthaṃ śravaṇīyamidaṃ nṛpa||
(And)O king, at that very time, Narada, sent by the celestials, arrived (there) and spoke to Partha these words grateful to the ear:

अर्जुनार्जुन मा युक्ष्व दिव्यान्यस्त्राणि भारत। नैतानि निरधिष्ठाने प्रयुज्यन्ते कथंचन॥
arjunārjuna mā yukṣva divyānyastrāṇi bhārata| naitāni niradhiṣṭhāne prayujyante kathaṃcana||
"O Arjuna, O Bharata, forebear discharging these celestials weapons. These (weapons) ought, by no means, to be hurled where there is no object to hit at.

अधिष्ठाने न वानातः प्रयुञ्जीत कदाचन। प्रयोगेषु महान् दोषो ह्यस्त्राणां कुरुनन्दन॥
adhiṣṭhāne na vānātaḥ prayuñjīta kadācana| prayogeṣu mahān doṣo hyastrāṇāṃ kurunandana||
And unless sore afflicted, one should not discharge these even if there is an object (present). O descendant of the Kurus, it will result in a terrible disaster, if these weapons are (causclessly) discharged.

एतानि रक्ष्यमाणानिधनंजय यथागमम्। बलवन्ति सुखार्हाणि भविष्यन्ति न संशयः॥
etāni rakṣyamāṇānidhanaṃjaya yathāgamam| balavanti sukhārhāṇi bhaviṣyanti na saṃśayaḥ||
O Dhananjaya, if these powerful weapons are duly kept, they will no doubt, lead to your happiness.

अरक्ष्यमाणान्येतानि त्रैलोक्यस्यापि पाण्डव। भवन्ति स्म विनाशाय मैवं भूयः कृथाः क्वचित्।।२२।
arakṣyamāṇānyetāni trailokyasyāpi pāṇḍava| bhavanti sma vināśāya maivaṃ bhūyaḥ kṛthāḥ kvacit||22|
(But), O Pandava, if they are not (carefully) preserved, they will lead to the destruction of the three worlds. Therefore, do not attempt such a (rash) act again.

अजातशत्रो त्वं चैव द्रक्ष्यसे तानि संयुगे। योज्यमानानि पार्थेन द्विषतामवमर्दने॥
ajātaśatro tvaṃ caiva drakṣyase tāni saṃyuge| yojyamānāni pārthena dviṣatāmavamardane||
O Ajatashatru (Yudhishthira), you will behold them when Partha will make use of them for the destruction of your enemies in battle."

वैशम्पायन उवाच निवार्याथ ततः पार्थं सर्वे देवा यथागतम्। जग्मुरन्ये च ये तत्र समाजग्मुर्नरर्षभ॥
vaiśampāyana uvāca nivāryātha tataḥ pārthaṃ sarve devā yathāgatam| jagmuranye ca ye tatra samājagmurnararṣabha||
O the most exalted of mortals, having prevented Arjuna (from hurling these weapons), all the celestials and all other beings who had come there went to their respective abodes.

तेषु सर्वेषु कौरव्य प्रतियातेषु पाण्डवाः। तस्मिन्नेव वने हृष्टास्त अषुः सह कृष्णया।॥
teṣu sarveṣu kauravya pratiyāteṣu pāṇḍavāḥ| tasminneva vane hṛṣṭāsta aṣuḥ saha kṛṣṇayā|||
O descendant of the Kurus, when all those had taken their departure, the Pandavas, together with Krishna, began to dwell cheerfully in that forest.
