वैशम्पायन उवाच वनं गतेषु पार्थेषु निर्जितेषु दुरोदरे। धृतराष्ट्र महाराज तदा चिन्ता समाविशत्॥
vaiśampāyana uvāca vanaṃ gateṣu pārtheṣu nirjiteṣu durodare| dhṛtarāṣṭra mahārāja tadā cintā samāviśat||
Vaishampayana said At the departure of the Pandavas to the forest after being defeated at dice, the great king Dhritarashtra was afflicted with great anxiety.

taṃ cintayānamāsīnaṃ dhṛtarāṣṭraṃ janeśvaram| niḥśvasantamanekāgramiti hovāca saṃjayaḥ||
When the ruler of men, Dhritarashtra was thus seated in anxiety and restlessness and sighing in grief, Sanjaya came to him and spoke thus.

Sanjaya said O lord of the world, you have (now) obtained the whole earth with all its wealth; you have banished the Pandavas, why then do you grieve so?

धृतराष्ट्र उवाच अशोच्यत्वं कुतस्तेषां येषां वैरं भविष्यति। पाण्डवैर्युद्धशौण्डैर्हि बलवद्भिर्महारथैः॥
dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca aśocyatvaṃ kutasteṣāṃ yeṣāṃ vairaṃ bhaviṣyati| pāṇḍavairyuddhaśauṇḍairhi balavadbhirmahārathaiḥ||
Dhritarashtra said What have they not to grieve for who will have to meet in battle those foremost of heroes, the Pandavas those great car warriors aided by allies.

Sanjaya said O king, this is assuredly a great act of yours, this great hostility which is inevitable and which will cause the destruction of the whole world.

वार्यमाणो हि भीष्मेण द्रोणेन विदुरेण च। पाण्डवानां प्रियां भार्यां द्रौपदी धर्मचारिणीम्॥ प्राहिणोदानयेहेति पुत्रो दुर्योधनस्तव। सूतपुत्रं सुमन्दात्मा निर्लज्जः प्रातिकामिनम्॥
vāryamāṇo hi bhīṣmeṇa droṇena vidureṇa ca| pāṇḍavānāṃ priyāṃ bhāryāṃ draupadī dharmacāriṇīm|| prāhiṇodānayeheti putro duryodhanastava| sūtaputraṃ sumandātmā nirlajjaḥ prātikāminam||
Forbidden by Bhisma, Drona, and Vidura, your wicked minded and shameless son, Duryodhana sent his Pratikamin, born in the Suta caste, commanding him to bring into the Sabha the beloved and virtuous wife of the Pandavas.

yasmai devāḥ prayacchanti puruṣāya parābhavam| buddhiṃ tasyāpakarṣanti so'vācīnāni paśyati||
The celestial first deprive that man of his reason to whom they ordain defeat and disgrace. It is for this, he sees every thing in a strange light.

बुद्धौ कलुषभूतायां विनाशे समुपस्थिते। अनयो नयसंकाशो हृदयानापसर्पति॥ अनर्थाश्चार्थरूपेण अर्थाश्चानर्थरूपिणः। उत्तिष्ठन्ति विनाशाय नूनं तच्चास्य रोचते॥
buddhau kaluṣabhūtāyāṃ vināśe samupasthite| anayo nayasaṃkāśo hṛdayānāpasarpati|| anarthāścārtharūpeṇa arthāścānartharūpiṇaḥ| uttiṣṭhanti vināśāya nūnaṃ taccāsya rocate||
When destruction is at hand, evil, appearing as good to the mind polluted by sin, remains stuck to it. That which is improper appears as proper, and that which is proper appears as improper to a man overwhelmed by destruction. And this he (always) likes.

न कालो दण्डमुद्यम्य शिरः कृन्तति कस्यचित्। कालस्य बलमेतावद् विपरीतार्थदर्शनम्॥
na kālo daṇḍamudyamya śiraḥ kṛntati kasyacit| kālasya balametāvad viparītārthadarśanam||
The Time that brings on destruction does not come with upraised club to smash one's head. Peculiarity of Time is this that it makes a man see evil in good and good in evil.

The wretches have brought on themselves this fearful, wholesale and horrible destruction by dragging into the Sabha the ascetic princess of Panchala.

अयोनिजां रूपवती कुले जातां विभावसोः। को नु तां सर्वधर्मज्ञां परिभूय यशस्विनीम्॥ पर्यानयेत् सभामध्ये विना दुर्दूतदेविनम्। स्त्रीधर्मिणी वरारोहा शोणितेन परिप्लुता॥
ayonijāṃ rūpavatī kule jātāṃ vibhāvasoḥ| ko nu tāṃ sarvadharmajñāṃ paribhūya yaśasvinīm|| paryānayet sabhāmadhye vinā durdūtadevinam| strīdharmiṇī varārohā śoṇitena pariplutā||
Who else than that false player at dice (Duryodhana) could bring into the Sabha with insults the daughter of Drupada, possessing beauty and intelligence, being conversant with every rule of morality and duty, and sprung not from any woman's womb but from the sacred fire. That beautiful lady was in her season covered with blood.

एकवस्त्राथ पाञ्चाली पाण्डवानभ्यवेक्षता हतस्वान् हतराज्यांश्च हृतवस्त्रान् हृतश्रियः॥ विहीनान् सर्वकामेभ्यो दासभावमुपागतान्। धर्मपाशपरिक्षिप्तानशक्तानिव विक्रमे॥ क्रुद्धां चानर्हती कृष्णां दु:खितां कुरुसंसदि।
ekavastrātha pāñcālī pāṇḍavānabhyavekṣatā hatasvān hatarājyāṃśca hṛtavastrān hṛtaśriyaḥ|| vihīnān sarvakāmebhyo dāsabhāvamupāgatān| dharmapāśaparikṣiptānaśaktāniva vikrame|| kruddhāṃ cānarhatī kṛṣṇāṃ du:khitāṃ kurusaṃsadi|
And in one cloth. Panchali (Draupadi) saw the Pandavas, plunged in slavery and robbed of their wealth, of their kingdom, of their attire, of their beauty, and of every object of enjoyment. Bound by the tie of virtue, they were then unable to exert their prowess.

दुर्योधनश्च कर्णश्च कटुकान्यभ्यभाषताम्॥ इति सर्वमिदं राजन्नाकुलं प्रतिभाति मे।
duryodhanaśca karṇaśca kaṭukānyabhyabhāṣatām|| iti sarvamidaṃ rājannākulaṃ pratibhāti me|
In the midst of the Kuru assembly, Duryodhana and Karna spoke cruel and harsh words to the distressed and enraged Krishna (Draupadi) who did not deserve such treatment.

Dhritarashtra said O Sanjaya, the glances of the affected Draupadi may consume the whole world. Is their any chance of any of my son's living?

भरतानां स्त्रियः सर्वा गान्धार्या सह संगताः॥ प्राक्रोशन् भैरवं तत्र दृष्ट्वा कृष्णां सभागताम्। धर्मिष्ठां धर्मपत्नी च रूपयौवनशालिनीम्॥
bharatānāṃ striyaḥ sarvā gāndhāryā saha saṃgatāḥ|| prākrośan bhairavaṃ tatra dṛṣṭvā kṛṣṇāṃ sabhāgatām| dharmiṣṭhāṃ dharmapatnī ca rūpayauvanaśālinīm||
The ladies of the Bharata race, with Gandhari, seeing the virtuous, young and beautiful Krishna (Draupadi), the wedded wife (of the Pandavas), dragged into court wept aloud. They are even now weeping every day along with all (my) subjects.

प्रजाभिः सह संगम्य ह्यनुशोचन्ति नित्यशः। अग्निहोत्राणि सायाहे न चाहूयन्त सर्वशः॥
prajābhiḥ saha saṃgamya hyanuśocanti nityaśaḥ| agnihotrāṇi sāyāhe na cāhūyanta sarvaśaḥ||
Enraged at the persecution on Draupadi, all the Brahmanas refrained from performing the Agnihotra in the evening.

ब्राह्मणाः कुपिताश्चासन् द्रौपद्याः परिकर्षणे। आसीनिष्ठानको घोरो निर्घातश्च महानभूत्॥ दिव उल्काश्चापतन्त राहुश्चार्कमुपाग्रसत्। अपर्वणि महाघोरं प्रजानां जनयन् भयम्॥ तथैव रथशालासु प्रादुरासीद्भुताशनः।
brāhmaṇāḥ kupitāścāsan draupadyāḥ parikarṣaṇe| āsīniṣṭhānako ghoro nirghātaśca mahānabhūt|| diva ulkāścāpatanta rāhuścārkamupāgrasat| aparvaṇi mahāghoraṃ prajānāṃ janayan bhayam|| tathaiva rathaśālāsu prādurāsīdbhutāśanaḥ|
The winds frightful begun to blow as they do at the universal destruction. A fearful thunder storm raged, Metros fell from the sky and devoured the sun, and unseasonably and fearfully alarmed all the people. The fire came blazing out from the chariot house.

ध्वजाश्चापि व्यशीर्यन्त भरतानामभूतये॥ दुर्योधनस्याग्निहोत्रे प्राक्रोशन भैरवं शिवाः।
dhvajāścāpi vyaśīryanta bharatānāmabhūtaye|| duryodhanasyāgnihotre prākrośana bhairavaṃ śivāḥ|
All their flag staffs fell down, foreboding evil to the Bharatas. Jackals fearfully cried out within the sacred fire chamber of Duryodhana.

kṛpaśca somadattaśca bāhrīkaśca mahāmanāḥ|| tato'hamabruvaṃ tatra vidureṇa pracoditaḥ|

varaṃ dadāni kṛṣṇāyai kākṣitaṃ yad yadicchati|| avṛṇot tatra pāñcālī pāṇḍavānāmadāsatām|

sarathān sadhanuṣkāṃścāpyanujñāsiṣamapyaham|| athābravīnmahāprājño viduraḥ sarvadharmavit|
I then set free the Pandavas and commanded them to go away with their cars, bows and arrows. It was then the greatly intelligent Vidura spoke thus.

etadantāstu bharatā yad vaḥ kṛṣṇā sabhāṃ gatā|| yaiṣā pāñcālarājasya sutā sā śrīranuttamā|
Vidura said This will prove the destruction of the Bharata race, namely the dragging of Krishna into the Sabha. This excellent daughter of the Panchala is Sree (the goddess of wealth) herself.

पाञ्चाली पाण्डवानेतान् दैवसृष्टोपसर्पति॥ तस्याः पार्थाः परिक्लेशं न ऑस्यन्ते घमर्षणाः।
pāñcālī pāṇḍavānetān daivasṛṣṭopasarpati|| tasyāḥ pārthāḥ parikleśaṃ na ऑsyante ghamarṣaṇāḥ|
Of celestial origin, Panchali is the wedded wife of the Pandavas. The wrathful sons of Pritha will never forgive the insult offered to her.

वृष्णयो वा महेष्वासाः पाञ्चाला वा महारथाः॥ तेन सत्याभिसंधेन वासुदेवेन रक्षिताः।
vṛṣṇayo vā maheṣvāsāḥ pāñcālā vā mahārathāḥ|| tena satyābhisaṃdhena vāsudevena rakṣitāḥ|

आगमिष्यति बीभत्सुः पाञ्चालैः परिवारितः॥ तेषां मध्ये महेष्वासो भीमसेनो महाबलः।
āgamiṣyati bībhatsuḥ pāñcālaiḥ parivāritaḥ|| teṣāṃ madhye maheṣvāso bhīmaseno mahābalaḥ|
Vivatsu (Arjuna) will certainly come back surrounded by the Panchala heroes. Among them, the great bowman and greatly powerful Bhimsena.

आगमिष्यति धुन्वानो गदां दण्डमिवान्तकः॥ ततो गाण्डीवनिर्घोषं श्रुत्वा पार्थस्य धीमतः। गदावेगं च भीमस्य नालं सोढुं नराधिपाः॥ तत्र मे रोचते नित्यं पार्थैः साम न विग्रहः।
āgamiṣyati dhunvāno gadāṃ daṇḍamivāntakaḥ|| tato gāṇḍīvanirghoṣaṃ śrutvā pārthasya dhīmataḥ| gadāvegaṃ ca bhīmasya nālaṃ soḍhuṃ narādhipāḥ|| tatra me rocate nityaṃ pārthaiḥ sāma na vigrahaḥ|
Will also come back whirling his club like Yama himself his mace. There will be no kings who will be able to stand the sound of the Govinda (bow) of the intelligent Partha (Arjuna) and the terrible force of the club of Bhima. Therefore it seems to me to be the best to have peace and not hostility with the sons of Pritha.

कुरुभ्यो हि सदा मन्ये पाण्डवान् बलवत्तरान्॥ तथा हि बलवान् राजा जरासंधो महाद्युतिः।
kurubhyo hi sadā manye pāṇḍavān balavattarān|| tathā hi balavān rājā jarāsaṃdho mahādyutiḥ|
The Pandavas are always stronger than the Kurus. The greatly effulgent king Jarasandha.

बाहुप्रहरणेनैव भीमेन निहतो युधि॥ तस्य ते शम एवास्तु पाण्डवैर्भरतर्षभ।
bāhupraharaṇenaiva bhīmena nihato yudhi|| tasya te śama evāstu pāṇḍavairbharatarṣabha|
Was killed in battle in Bhima with his bare arms. O best of the Bharata race, you should therefore make peace with the Pandavas.

O great king, without scruples of any kind, unite the two parties. If it is done, you are sure to obtain good fortune."

एवं कृते महाराज परं श्रेयस्त्वमाप्स्यसि। एवं गावल्गणे क्षत्ता धर्मार्थसहितं वचः॥ उक्तवान् न गृहीतं वै मया पुत्रहितैषिणा॥
evaṃ kṛte mahārāja paraṃ śreyastvamāpsyasi| evaṃ gāvalgaṇe kṣattā dharmārthasahitaṃ vacaḥ|| uktavān na gṛhītaṃ vai mayā putrahitaiṣiṇā||
Dhritarashtra said The son of Gavalgana, Khattwa (Vidura) spoke in words replete with Dharma and Artha. I did not accept his words moved by the affection I bear for my sons.
