वैशम्पायन उवाच ततः सागरसंकाशं दृष्ट्वा नृपतिमण्डलम्। संवर्तवाताभिहतं भीमं क्षुब्धमिवार्णवम्॥ रोषात् प्रचलितं सर्वमिदमाह युधिष्ठिरः। भीष्मं मतिमतां मुख्यं वृद्धं कुरुपितामहम्। बृहस्पतिं बृहत्तेजाः पुरुहूत इवारिहा॥ असौ रोषात् प्रचलितो महान् नृपतिसागरः। अत्र यत् प्रतिपत्तव्यं तन्मे ब्रूहि पितामह॥
vaiśampāyana uvāca tataḥ sāgarasaṃkāśaṃ dṛṣṭvā nṛpatimaṇḍalam| saṃvartavātābhihataṃ bhīmaṃ kṣubdhamivārṇavam|| roṣāt pracalitaṃ sarvamidamāha yudhiṣṭhiraḥ| bhīṣmaṃ matimatāṃ mukhyaṃ vṛddhaṃ kurupitāmaham| bṛhaspatiṃ bṛhattejāḥ puruhūta ivārihā|| asau roṣāt pracalito mahān nṛpatisāgaraḥ| atra yat pratipattavyaṃ tanme brūhi pitāmaha||
Vaishampayana said Seeing that assembly of kings agitated by anger, as the fearful ocean is agitated by the winds at the time of the universal dissolution, Yudhishthira thus spoke to that foremost of all intelligent men, the grandsire of the Kurus, the aged Bhishma, as that slayer of foes, Purohita (Indra) of extraordinary prowess, speaks to Brihaspati. “This.vast ocean of kings have been agitated by wrath. O grandsire, tell me what should be done now.

यज्ञस्य च न विघ्नः स्यात् प्रजानां च हितं भवेत्। यथा सर्वत्र तत् सर्वं ब्रूहि मेऽद्य पितामह॥
yajñasya ca na vighnaḥ syāt prajānāṃ ca hitaṃ bhavet| yathā sarvatra tat sarvaṃ brūhi me'dya pitāmaha||
O grandsire, tell me what I should do now that my sacrifice may not be obstructed and my subjects may not be injured”.

इत्युक्तवति धर्मज्ञे धर्मराजे युधिष्ठिरे। उवाचेदं वचो भीष्मस्ततः कुरुपितामहः॥
ityuktavati dharmajñe dharmarāje yudhiṣṭhire| uvācedaṃ vaco bhīṣmastataḥ kurupitāmahaḥ||
When Dharmaraja Yudhishthira, learned in morality, said this, the grandsire of the Kurus Bhishma thus spoke to him.

मा भैस्त्वं कुरुशार्दूल श्वा सिंहं हन्तुमर्हति। शिवः पन्थाः सुनीतोऽत्र मया पूर्वतरं वृतः॥
mā bhaistvaṃ kuruśārdūla śvā siṃhaṃ hantumarhati| śivaḥ panthāḥ sunīto'tra mayā pūrvataraṃ vṛtaḥ||
"O best of the Kurus, do not be alarmed. can the dog kill the lion? I have already settled some means that is both beneficial and conformable to policy.

प्रसुप्ते हि यथा सिंहे श्वानस्तस्मिन् समागताः। भषेयुः सहिताः सर्वे तथेमे वसुधाधिपाः॥
prasupte hi yathā siṃhe śvānastasmin samāgatāḥ| bhaṣeyuḥ sahitāḥ sarve tatheme vasudhādhipāḥ||
As a pack of dogs bark all together at a sleeping lion, so do all these rulers of the earth.

वृष्णिसिंहस्य सुप्तस्य तथामी प्रमुखे स्थिताः। भषन्ते तात संक्रुद्धाः श्वान: सिंहस्य संनिधौ॥
vṛṣṇisiṃhasya suptasya tathāmī pramukhe sthitāḥ| bhaṣante tāta saṃkruddhāḥ śvāna: siṃhasya saṃnidhau||
O child, like the dogs at the lion, these (kings) are angrily barking before the sleeping lion of the Vrishni race (Krishna).

न हि सम्बुध्यते यावत् सुप्तः सिंह इवाच्युतः। तेन सिंहीकरोत्येतान् नृसिंहश्चेदिपुङ्गवः॥
na hi sambudhyate yāvat suptaḥ siṃha ivācyutaḥ| tena siṃhīkarotyetān nṛsiṃhaścedipuṅgavaḥ||
Achyuta (Krishna) is now like a lion that is asleep. So long he does not wake up this king of the Chedis, this foremost of men, makes these monarchs look like the lions.

पार्थिवान् पार्थिवश्रेष्ठः शिशुपालोऽप्यचेतनः। सर्वान् सर्वात्मना तात नेतुकामो यमक्षयम्॥
pārthivān pārthivaśreṣṭhaḥ śiśupālo'pyacetanaḥ| sarvān sarvātmanā tāta netukāmo yamakṣayam||
O best of kings, O child, this Shishupala possesses but little intelligence. He is desirous of taking along (with him) all these monarchs to the abode of Yama through the agency of him who is the soul of this universe.

नूनमेतत् समादातुं पुनरिच्छत्यधोक्षजः। यदस्य शिशुपालस्य तेजस्तिष्ठति भारत॥
nūnametat samādātuṃ punaricchatyadhokṣajaḥ| yadasya śiśupālasya tejastiṣṭhati bhārata||
O descendant of Bharata, Krishna has been surely desirous of taking back to himself the effulgence and prowess that now lives in Shishupala.

विप्लुता चास्य भद्रं ते बुद्धिर्बुद्धमतां वर। चेदिराजस्य कौन्तेय सर्वेषां च महीक्षिताम्॥
viplutā cāsya bhadraṃ te buddhirbuddhamatāṃ vara| cedirājasya kaunteya sarveṣāṃ ca mahīkṣitām||
O son of Kunti, O foremost of all intelligent men, the intelligence of this wicked king of the Chedis, as well as that of all these kings, have become perverse.

आदातुं च नरव्याघ्रो यं यमिच्छत्ययं तदा। तस्य विप्लवते बुद्धिरेवं चेदिपतेर्यथा॥
ādātuṃ ca naravyāghro yaṃ yamicchatyayaṃ tadā| tasya viplavate buddhirevaṃ cedipateryathā||
The intelligence of all men whom this best of men (Krishna) desires to take to himself become as perverse as that of this Chedi king.

चतुर्विधानां भूतानां त्रिषु लोकेषु माधवः। प्रभवश्चैव सर्वेषां निधनं च युधिष्ठिरः॥
caturvidhānāṃ bhūtānāṃ triṣu lokeṣu mādhavaḥ| prabhavaścaiva sarveṣāṃ nidhanaṃ ca yudhiṣṭhiraḥ||
O Yudhishthira, Madhava is the creator and destroyer of all the four kinds of beings existing in the three worlds.

वैशम्पायन उवाच इति तस्य वचः श्रुत्वा ततश्चेदिपतिनृपः। भीष्मं रुक्षाक्षरा वाचः श्रावयामास भारत॥
vaiśampāyana uvāca iti tasya vacaḥ śrutvā tataścedipatinṛpaḥ| bhīṣmaṃ rukṣākṣarā vācaḥ śrāvayāmāsa bhārata||
O descendant of Bharata, having heard his words, the king of the Chedis spoke thus to Bhishma in stem and harsh words.
