वैशम्पायन उवाच कथयित्वा च तत् सव ब्राह्मणेभ्यः स भारत। प्रययौ हिमवत्पार्वं ततो वज्रधरात्मजः॥

vaiśampāyana uvāca kathayitvā ca tat sava brāhmaṇebhyaḥ sa bhārata| prayayau himavatpārvaṃ tato vajradharātmajaḥ||

Vaishampayana said : O descendant of Bharata, the son of the wielder of thunder (Indra), having narrated everything to the Brahmanas, started for the side of the Himalayas.

अगस्त्यवटमासाद्य वसिष्ठस्य च पर्वतम्। भृगुतुङ्गे च कौन्तेयः कृतवाञ्छौचमात्मनः॥

agastyavaṭamāsādya vasiṣṭhasya ca parvatam| bhṛgutuṅge ca kaunteyaḥ kṛtavāñchaucamātmanaḥ||

Arriving first at Agastya Vata, the son of Kunti, then went to the Vasishtha's hill. On the peak of Bhrigu hill he performed his ablutions.

प्रददौ गोसहस्राणि सुबहूनि च भारत। निवेशांश्च द्विजातिभ्यः सोऽददत् कुरुसत्तमः॥

pradadau gosahasrāṇi subahūni ca bhārata| niveśāṃśca dvijātibhyaḥ so'dadat kurusattamaḥ||

descendant of Bharata, the best of the Kurus gave away to many Brahmanas thousands of king and houses.

हिरण्यबिन्दोस्तीर्थे च स्नात्वा पुरुषसत्तमः। दृष्टवान् पाण्डवश्रेष्ठः पुण्यान्यायतनानि च॥

hiraṇyabindostīrthe ca snātvā puruṣasattamaḥ| dṛṣṭavān pāṇḍavaśreṣṭhaḥ puṇyānyāyatanāni ca||

That best of then bathed at the pilgrimage, named, Hiranyabindu and then that best of Pandavas went to many other sacred pieces.

अवतीर्य नरश्रेष्ठो ब्राह्मणैः सह भारत। प्राची दिशमभिप्रेत्सुर्जगाम भरतर्षभः॥

avatīrya naraśreṣṭho brāhmaṇaiḥ saha bhārata| prācī diśamabhipretsurjagāma bharatarṣabhaḥ||

O best of Bharata race, that best of men accompanied by the Brahmanas then descended (form those hills) and the countries situated in that direction,

आनुपूर्वेण तीर्थानि दृष्टवान् कुरुसत्तमः। नदी चोत्पलिनी रम्यामरण्यं नैमिषं प्रति॥ नन्दामपरनन्दां च कौशिकी च यशस्विनीम्। महानदीं गयां चैव गङ्गामपि च भारत॥ एवं तीर्थानि सर्वाणि पश्यमानस्तथाऽऽश्रमान्। आत्मनः पावनं कुर्वन् ब्राह्मणेभ्यो ददौ च गाः॥

ānupūrveṇa tīrthāni dṛṣṭavān kurusattamaḥ| nadī cotpalinī ramyāmaraṇyaṃ naimiṣaṃ prati|| nandāmaparanandāṃ ca kauśikī ca yaśasvinīm| mahānadīṃ gayāṃ caiva gaṅgāmapi ca bhārata|| evaṃ tīrthāni sarvāṇi paśyamānastathā''śramān| ātmanaḥ pāvanaṃ kurvan brāhmaṇebhyo dadau ca gāḥ||

The best of the Kurus saw the pilgrimages one after the other. O descendant of Bharata, he saw the river Utpalasa in the forest of Naimisha: (he saw) the Nanda, the Upananda, the famous Kaushika, the great rivers Gaya and Ganga and other Tirthas and hermitages where he purified himself and gave away to the Brahmanas (many) kine.

अगवङ्गकलिङ्गेषु यानि तीर्थानि कानिचित्। जगाम तानि सर्वाणि पुण्यान्यायतनानि च॥

agavaṅgakaliṅgeṣu yāni tīrthāni kānicit| jagāma tāni sarvāṇi puṇyānyāyatanāni ca||

Whatever Tirthas and other holy places were in Anga, Vanga and Kalinga, he went to all of them.

दृष्ट्वा च विधिवत् तानि धनं चापि ददौ ततः। कलिङ्गराष्ट्रद्वारेषु ब्राह्मणाः पाण्डवानुगाः। अभ्यनुज्ञाय कौन्तेयमुपावर्तन्त भारत॥

dṛṣṭvā ca vidhivat tāni dhanaṃ cāpi dadau tataḥ| kaliṅgarāṣṭradvāreṣu brāhmaṇāḥ pāṇḍavānugāḥ| abhyanujñāya kaunteyamupāvartanta bhārata||

O descendant of Bharata, seeing them all and performing many ceremonies and giving away much wealth, he went to the gate of the kingdom of Kalinga where the Brahmanas, who were following him, bade the son of Kunti farewell and desisted from following him any further.

स तु तैरभ्यनुज्ञातः कुन्तीपुत्रो धनंजयः। सहायैरल्पकैः शूरः प्रययौ यत्र सागरः॥

sa tu tairabhyanujñātaḥ kuntīputro dhanaṃjayaḥ| sahāyairalpakaiḥ śūraḥ prayayau yatra sāgaraḥ||

Having obtained their leave, the son of Kunti, the brave Dhananjaya, accompanied by only a few attendants, went there where the was.

स कलिङ्गानतिक्रम्य देशानायतनानि च। हाणि रमणीयानि प्रेक्षमाणो ययौ प्रभुः॥

sa kaliṅgānatikramya deśānāyatanāni ca| hāṇi ramaṇīyāni prekṣamāṇo yayau prabhuḥ||

Crossing (the country of the Kalingas and seeing on his way many countries, holy places and charming mansions, that lord preceded on.

महेन्द्रपर्वतं दृष्ट्वा तापसैरुपशोभितम्। समुद्रतीरेण शनैर्मणिपूरं जगाम ह॥

mahendraparvataṃ dṛṣṭvā tāpasairupaśobhitam| samudratīreṇa śanairmaṇipūraṃ jagāma ha||

Seeing the Mahendra mountain adorned with the ascetics and going slowly along the sea-shores, he went to Manipur.

तत्र सर्वाणि तीर्थानि पुण्यान्यायतनानि च। अभिगम्य महाबाहुरभ्यगच्छन्महीपतिम्॥

tatra sarvāṇi tīrthāni puṇyānyāyatanāni ca| abhigamya mahābāhurabhyagacchanmahīpatim||

O king seeing all Tirthas and other holy places, the mighty-armed hero went.

मणिपूरेश्वरं राजन् धर्मज्ञं चित्रवाहनम्। तस्य चित्राङ्गदा नाम दुहिता चारुदर्शना॥

maṇipūreśvaraṃ rājan dharmajñaṃ citravāhanam| tasya citrāṅgadā nāma duhitā cārudarśanā||

To the king of Manipur, the virtuous Chitravahana, who had a beautiful daughter named Chitrangada.

तां ददर्श पुरे तस्मिन् विचरन्तीं यदृच्छया। दृष्ट्वा च तां वरारोहां चकमे चैत्रवाहनीम्॥

tāṃ dadarśa pure tasmin vicarantīṃ yadṛcchayā| dṛṣṭvā ca tāṃ varārohāṃ cakame caitravāhanīm||

He saw her in capital roaming at pleasure. Seeing the handsome of Chitravahana, he was filled with desire.

अभिगम्य च राजानमवदत् स्वं प्रयोजनम्। देहि मे खल्विमा राजन् क्षत्रियाय महात्मने॥

abhigamya ca rājānamavadat svaṃ prayojanam| dehi me khalvimā rājan kṣatriyāya mahātmane||

Going to the king, he told him what he desired, saying, “O king, give your daughter to son of an illustrious Kshatriya.

तच्छ्रुत्ा त्वब्रवीद् राजा कस्य पुत्रोऽसि नाम किम्। उवाच तं पाण्डवोऽहं कुन्तीपुत्रो धनंजयः॥

tacchrutā tvabravīd rājā kasya putro'si nāma kim| uvāca taṃ pāṇḍavo'haṃ kuntīputro dhanaṃjayaḥ||

Having heard this, the king said “Whose son are you and what is your name?" He (Arjuna) replied, “I am the Pandava, the son of Kunti, Dhananjaya".

तमुवाचाथ राजा स सान्त्वपूर्वमिदं वचः। राजा प्रभञ्जनो नाम कुलेऽस्मिन् सम्बभूव ह॥

tamuvācātha rājā sa sāntvapūrvamidaṃ vacaḥ| rājā prabhañjano nāma kule'smin sambabhūva ha||

The king then spoke thus in sweet accents, "There was born a king in our race named Prabhanjana.

अपुत्रः प्रसवेनार्थी तपस्तेपे स उत्तमम्। उग्रेण तपसा तेन देवदेवः पिनाकधृक्॥ ईश्वरस्तोषितः पार्थ देवदेव उमापतिः। स तस्मै भगवान् प्रादादेकैकं प्रसवं कुले॥

aputraḥ prasavenārthī tapastepe sa uttamam| ugreṇa tapasā tena devadevaḥ pinākadhṛk|| īśvarastoṣitaḥ pārtha devadeva umāpatiḥ| sa tasmai bhagavān prādādekaikaṃ prasavaṃ kule||

He was childless. In order to get a child he performed excellent penances. By his severe austerities, the god of gods, the wielder of Pinaka (Shiva). The supreme lord the god of gods and the husband of Uma, O Partha, was gratificd. The illustrious Deity gave him the boon that only one child would be born in our race (in succession).

एकैकः प्रसवस्तस्माद् भवत्यस्मिन् कुले सदा। तेषां कुमारा: सर्वेषां पूर्वेषां मम जज्ञिरे॥ एका च मम कन्येयं कुलस्योत्पादिनी भृशम्। पुत्रो ममायमिति मे भावना पुरुषर्षभ॥

ekaikaḥ prasavastasmād bhavatyasmin kule sadā| teṣāṃ kumārā: sarveṣāṃ pūrveṣāṃ mama jajñire|| ekā ca mama kanyeyaṃ kulasyotpādinī bhṛśam| putro mamāyamiti me bhāvanā puruṣarṣabha||

Thence only one child is born to every successive descendant of race. All my ancestors had each a male child. But I have only a daughter to perpetuate my race. O best of men, I always consider her as my son.

पुत्रिका हेतुविधिना संज्ञिता भरतर्षभ। तस्मादेकः सुतो योऽस्यां जायते भारत त्वया॥ एतच्छुल्कं भवत्वस्याः कुलकृज्जायतामिह। एतेन समयेनेमां प्रतिगृहणीष्व पाण्डव।॥

putrikā hetuvidhinā saṃjñitā bharatarṣabha| tasmādekaḥ suto yo'syāṃ jāyate bhārata tvayā|| etacchulkaṃ bhavatvasyāḥ kulakṛjjāyatāmiha| etena samayenemāṃ pratigṛhaṇīṣva pāṇḍava|||

O best of the Bharata race, I have made her a Putrika (heir). O descendant of Bharata, the one son that will be born to her will be the perpetuator of my race. That son will be the dower in this marriage. O Pandava, you can take her if you like on this condition.

स तथेति प्रतिज्ञाय तां कन्यां प्रतिगृह्य च। उवास नगरे तस्मिस्तिस्त्रः कुन्तीसुतः समाः॥

sa tatheti pratijñāya tāṃ kanyāṃ pratigṛhya ca| uvāsa nagare tasmististraḥ kuntīsutaḥ samāḥ||

Promising to he accepted that maiden and the son of Kunti lived in that city for three years.

तस्यां सुते समुत्पन्ने परिष्वज्य वराङ्गनाम्। आमन्त्र्य नृपतिं तं तु जगाम परिवर्तितुम्॥

tasyāṃ sute samutpanne pariṣvajya varāṅganām| āmantrya nṛpatiṃ taṃ tu jagāma parivartitum||

When she gave birth to a son, he (Arjuna) embraced her with affection and taking leave of the king, he set out again in his travels.
