जनमेजय उवाच एवं सम्प्राप्य राज्यं तदिन्द्रप्रस्थं तपोधन। अत ऊर्ध्वं महात्मानः किमकुर्वत पाण्डवाः॥ सर्व एव महासत्त्वा मम पूर्वपितामहाः। द्रौपदी धर्मपत्नी च कथं तानन्ववर्तत।॥

janamejaya uvāca evaṃ samprāpya rājyaṃ tadindraprasthaṃ tapodhana| ata ūrdhvaṃ mahātmānaḥ kimakurvata pāṇḍavāḥ|| sarva eva mahāsattvā mama pūrvapitāmahāḥ| draupadī dharmapatnī ca kathaṃ tānanvavartata|||

Janamejaya said : O ascetic, what did those illustrious men, the high-souled ones, my grandsires, the Pandavas, do after obtaining the kingdom of Indraprastha? How did their wedded wife Draupadi obey them all?

कथं च पञ्च कृष्णायामेकस्यां ते नराधिपाः। वर्तमाना महाभागा नाभिद्यन्त परस्परम्॥

kathaṃ ca pañca kṛṣṇāyāmekasyāṃ te narādhipāḥ| vartamānā mahābhāgā nābhidyanta parasparam||

How was it that no dissension arose amongst those illustrious rulers of men, though attached to one wife Krishna?

श्रोतुमिच्छाम्यहं सर्वं विस्तरेण तपोधन। तेषां चेष्टितमन्योन्यं युक्तानां कृष्णया सह॥

śrotumicchāmyahaṃ sarvaṃ vistareṇa tapodhana| teṣāṃ ceṣṭitamanyonyaṃ yuktānāṃ kṛṣṇayā saha||

O ascetic Rishi, I desire to hear everything in detail as regards their conduct towards one another after their union with Krishna.

वैशम्पायन उवाच धृतराष्ट्राभ्यनुज्ञाता: कृष्णया सह पाण्डवाः। रेमिरे खाण्डवप्रस्थे प्राप्तराज्या: परंतपाः॥

vaiśampāyana uvāca dhṛtarāṣṭrābhyanujñātā: kṛṣṇayā saha pāṇḍavāḥ| remire khāṇḍavaprasthe prāptarājyā: paraṃtapāḥ||

Vaishampayana said : Having obtained their kingdom at the command of Dhritarashtra, those chastisers of foes, the Pandavas, sported with Krishna at Indraprastha.

प्राप्य राज्यं महातेजाः सत्यसंधो युधिष्ठिरः। पालयामास धर्मेण पृथिवीं भ्रातृभिः सह॥

prāpya rājyaṃ mahātejāḥ satyasaṃdho yudhiṣṭhiraḥ| pālayāmāsa dharmeṇa pṛthivīṃ bhrātṛbhiḥ saha||

Having obtained the kingdom, the ever truthful greatly effulgent Yudhishthira with his brothers virtuously ruled the kingdom.

जितारयो महाप्रज्ञाः सत्यधर्मपरायणाः। मुदं परमिकां प्राप्तास्तत्रोषुः पाण्डुनन्दनाः॥

jitārayo mahāprajñāḥ satyadharmaparāyaṇāḥ| mudaṃ paramikāṃ prāptāstatroṣuḥ pāṇḍunandanāḥ||

Having defeated all their foes, the greatly wise and ever devoted to truth and virtue, the sons of Pandu lived there in great happiness.

कुर्वाणां पौरकार्याणि सर्वाणि पुरुषर्षभाः। आसांचक्रुर्महार्हेषु पार्थिवेष्वासनेषु च॥

kurvāṇāṃ paurakāryāṇi sarvāṇi puruṣarṣabhāḥ| āsāṃcakrurmahārheṣu pārthiveṣvāsaneṣu ca||

Those of men, seated on costly royal seats, discharged all the duties of government.

अथ तेषूपविष्टेषु सर्वेष्वेव महात्मसु। नारदस्त्वथ देवर्षिराजगाम यदृच्छया॥

atha teṣūpaviṣṭeṣu sarveṣveva mahātmasu| nāradastvatha devarṣirājagāma yadṛcchayā||

When (one day) those illustrious heroes so seated, there came to them the celestials Rishi Narada in course of his travels.

तमागतमृर्षि दृष्ट्वा प्रत्युद्गम्याभिवाद्यच। आसनं रुचिरं तस्मै प्रददौ स्वं युधिष्ठिरः। देवर्षेरुपविष्टस्य स्वयमर्थ्य यथाविधि॥ प्रादाद् युधिष्ठिरो धीमान् राज्यं तस्मै न्यवेदयत्। प्रतिगृह्य तु तां पूजामृषिः प्रीतमनास्तदा॥

tamāgatamṛrṣi dṛṣṭvā pratyudgamyābhivādyaca| āsanaṃ ruciraṃ tasmai pradadau svaṃ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ| devarṣerupaviṣṭasya svayamarthya yathāvidhi|| prādād yudhiṣṭhiro dhīmān rājyaṃ tasmai nyavedayat| pratigṛhya tu tāṃ pūjāmṛṣiḥ prītamanāstadā||

Yudhishthira gave him his own excellent seat. When the celestials Rishi was seated, the wise Yudhishthira duly offered him the Arghya with his own hands. The Rishi accepted the worship and became very much pleased.

आशीभिर्वर्धयित्वा च तमुवाचास्यतामिति। निषसादाभ्यनुज्ञातस्ततो राजा युधिष्ठिरः॥

āśībhirvardhayitvā ca tamuvācāsyatāmiti| niṣasādābhyanujñātastato rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ||

Uttering benedictions on him, he (the Rishi) asked him (Yudhishthira) to take his seat. Thus commanded, the king Yudhishthira took his seat.

कथयामास कृष्णायै भगवन्तमुपस्थितम्। श्रुत्वैतद् द्रौपदी चापि शुचिर्भूत्वा समाहिता॥

kathayāmāsa kṛṣṇāyai bhagavantamupasthitam| śrutvaitad draupadī cāpi śucirbhūtvā samāhitā||

He sent words to Krishna informing her of the arrival of the high-souled (Rishi). Hearing it, Draupadi, after properly purifying herself.

जगाम तत्र यत्रास्ते नारदः पाण्डवैः सह। तस्याभिवाद्य चरणौ देवर्षेर्धर्मचारिणी॥

jagāma tatra yatrāste nāradaḥ pāṇḍavaiḥ saha| tasyābhivādya caraṇau devarṣerdharmacāriṇī||

Went there where Narada was with the Pandavas. And that lady of virtuous deeds worshipped his feet.

कृताञ्जलिः सुसंवीता स्थिताथ दुपदात्मजा। तस्याश्चापि स धर्मात्माः सत्यवागृषिसत्तमः॥

kṛtāñjaliḥ susaṃvītā sthitātha dupadātmajā| tasyāścāpi sa dharmātmāḥ satyavāgṛṣisattamaḥ||

Then the daughter of Drupada, being properly covered with her veil, stood before him with joined hands. That virtuous, truthful and excellent Rishi.

आशिषो विविधाः प्रोच्य राजपुत्र्यास्तु नारदः। गम्यतामिति होवाच भगवांस्तामनिन्दिताम्॥

āśiṣo vividhāḥ procya rājaputryāstu nāradaḥ| gamyatāmiti hovāca bhagavāṃstāmaninditām||

The illustrious Rishi Narada, after uttering various benedictions on the princess and saying that faultless lady, “Go," sent her away.

गतायामथ कृष्णायां युधिष्ठिरपुरोगमान्। विविक्ते पाण्डवान् सर्वानुवाच भगवानृपिः॥

gatāyāmatha kṛṣṇāyāṃ yudhiṣṭhirapurogamān| vivikte pāṇḍavān sarvānuvāca bhagavānṛpiḥ||

When Krishna retired, the illustrious Rishi thus spoke to the Pandavas with Yudhishthira at their head.

नारद उवाच पाञ्चाली भवतामेका धर्मपत्नी यशस्विनी। यथा वो नात्र भेदः स्यात् तथा नीतिविधीयताम्॥

nārada uvāca pāñcālī bhavatāmekā dharmapatnī yaśasvinī| yathā vo nātra bhedaḥ syāt tathā nītividhīyatām||

Narada said: The illustrious princess of Panchala is the wedded wife of all of you establish a rule amongst yourselves so that no dissension may arise amongst you.

सुन्दोपसुन्दौ हि पुरा भ्रातरौ सहितावुभौ। आस्तामवध्यावन्येषां त्रिषु लोकेषु विश्रुतौ॥

sundopasundau hi purā bhrātarau sahitāvubhau| āstāmavadhyāvanyeṣāṃ triṣu lokeṣu viśrutau||

There were in the days of yore two brothers, celebrated throughout the three words by the names of Sunda and Upasunda; they were incapable if being killed by any one else except one by the other.

एकराज्यावेकगृहावेकश्यायसनाशनौ। तिलोत्तमायास्तौ हेतोरन्योन्यमभिजघ्नतुः॥

ekarājyāvekagṛhāvekaśyāyasanāśanau| tilottamāyāstau hetoranyonyamabhijaghnatuḥ||

They ruled the same kingdom, lived in the same house, slept on the same bed, sat on the same seat and ate off the same dish, yet they killed each other for the sake of Tilottama.

रक्ष्यतां सौहृदं तस्मादन्योन्यप्रीतिभावकम्। यथा वो नात्र भेदः स्यात् तत् कुरुष्व युधिष्ठिर॥

rakṣyatāṃ sauhṛdaṃ tasmādanyonyaprītibhāvakam| yathā vo nātra bhedaḥ syāt tat kuruṣva yudhiṣṭhira||

O Yudhishthira, therefore preserve your friendship for one another and do that which may not produce dissension amongst you.

युधिष्ठिर उवाच सुन्दोपसुन्दावसुरौ कस्य पुत्रौ महामुने। उत्पन्नश्च कथं भेदः कथं चान्योन्यमनताम्॥

yudhiṣṭhira uvāca sundopasundāvasurau kasya putrau mahāmune| utpannaśca kathaṃ bhedaḥ kathaṃ cānyonyamanatām||

Yudhishthira said : O great Rishi, whose sons were Sunda and Upasunda? How did their dissension arise and why did they kill each other?

अप्सरा देवकन्या वा कस्य चैषा तिलोत्तमा। यस्याः कामेन सम्मत्तौ जघ्नतुस्तौ परस्परम्॥

apsarā devakanyā vā kasya caiṣā tilottamā| yasyāḥ kāmena sammattau jaghnatustau parasparam||

Whose daughter was the Apsara, the celestials maiden Tilottama? Maddened by whose love they killed each other?

एतत् सर्वं यथावृत्तं विस्तरेण तपोधन। श्रोतुमिच्छामहे ब्रह्मन् परं कौतूहलं हि नः॥

etat sarvaṃ yathāvṛttaṃ vistareṇa tapodhana| śrotumicchāmahe brahman paraṃ kautūhalaṃ hi naḥ||

O ascetic, O Brahmana, I desire to hear all this in detail as it happened. Our curiosity has become very great.
