वैशम्पायन उवाच गत्वा तु तां भार्गवकर्मशाला पार्थो पृथां प्राप्य महानुभावौ। तां याज्ञसेनी परमप्रतीतौ भिक्षेत्यथावेदयतां नरावयौ॥
vaiśampāyana uvāca gatvā tu tāṃ bhārgavakarmaśālā pārtho pṛthāṃ prāpya mahānubhāvau| tāṃ yājñasenī paramapratītau bhikṣetyathāvedayatāṃ narāvayau||
Vaishampayana said : Then those two illustrious sons of Pritha, returning to the Potter's house, came to their mother. And those best of men represented Yajnaseni to their mother as the “Alms” they had obtained that day.

कुटीगता सा त्वनवेक्ष्य पुत्रौ प्रोवाच भुङ्क्तेति समेत्य सर्वे। पश्चाच्च कुन्ती प्रसमीक्ष्य कृष्णां कष्टं मया भाषितमित्युवाच॥
kuṭīgatā sā tvanavekṣya putrau provāca bhuṅkteti sametya sarve| paścācca kuntī prasamīkṣya kṛṣṇāṃ kaṣṭaṃ mayā bhāṣitamityuvāca||
Kunti who was within the room did not see her sons. She, therefore, replied saying. “Enjoy all of you (what you have got.") A moment after she saw Krishna (Draupadi) and said, "Alas! what have I said?

साधर्मभीता परिचन्तयन्ती तां याज्ञसेनी परमप्रतीताम्। पाणौ गृहीत्वोपजगाम कुन्ती युधिष्ठिरे वाक्यमुवाच चेदम्॥
sādharmabhītā paricantayantī tāṃ yājñasenī paramapratītām| pāṇau gṛhītvopajagāma kuntī yudhiṣṭhire vākyamuvāca cedam||
Being anxious with the fear of sin and reflecting how every one could be extricated from the situation, she took the cheerful Yajnaseni by the hand and coming to Yudhishthira, she said.

कुन्त्युवाच इयं तु कन्या दुपदस्य राज्ञः तवानुजाभ्यां मयि संनिविष्टा। यथोचितं पुत्र मयापि चोक्तं समेत्य भुङ्क्तेति नृप प्रमादात्॥
kuntyuvāca iyaṃ tu kanyā dupadasya rājñaḥ tavānujābhyāṃ mayi saṃniviṣṭā| yathocitaṃ putra mayāpi coktaṃ sametya bhuṅkteti nṛpa pramādāt||
Kunti said: This daughter of the king Yajnasena, upon being represented to me by your younger brothers as the “Alms” they had obtained, O king, from ignorance I said what was proper, namely, “Enjoy all of you what you have got.”

मया कथं नानृतमुक्तमद्य भवेत् कुरूणामृषभ ब्रवीहि। पाञ्चालराजस्य सुतामधर्मो न चोपवर्तेत न विभ्रमेच्च॥
mayā kathaṃ nānṛtamuktamadya bhavet kurūṇāmṛṣabha bravīhi| pāñcālarājasya sutāmadharmo na copavarteta na vibhramecca||
O best of the Kurus, tell me how my speech may not become futile, how sin may not touch the daughter of the Panchala king and how she may not become unhappy.

वैशम्पायन उवाच स एवमुक्तो मतिमान् नृवीरो मात्रा मुहूर्तं तु विचिन्त्य राजा। कुन्ती समाश्वास्य कुरुप्रवीरो धनंजयं वाक्यमिदं बभाषे॥
vaiśampāyana uvāca sa evamukto matimān nṛvīro mātrā muhūrtaṃ tu vicintya rājā| kuntī samāśvāsya kurupravīro dhanaṃjayaṃ vākyamidaṃ babhāṣe||
Vaishampayana said : Having been thus addressed by his mother, that foremost of the Kuru race, that hero, the intelligent king. (Yudhishthira) consoling Kunti, thus addressed Dhananjaya,

फाल्गुन याज्ञसेनी त्वयैव शोभिष्यति राजपुत्री। त्वया जिता प्रज्वाल्यतामग्निरमित्रसाह गृहाण पाणिं विधिवत् त्वमस्या:॥
phālguna yājñasenī tvayaiva śobhiṣyati rājaputrī| tvayā jitā prajvālyatāmagniramitrasāha gṛhāṇa pāṇiṃ vidhivat tvamasyā:||
"O Falguni, Yajnaseni has been won by you. It is proper therefore that you should marry this princess. O with stander of all foes, therefore kindle the sacred fire and marry her with all due rites."

अर्जुन उवाच मा मां नरेन्द्र त्वमधर्मभाज कृथा न धर्मोऽयमशिष्टदृष्टः। भवान् निवेश्यः प्रथमं ततोऽयं भीमो महाबाहुरचिन्त्यकर्मा॥
arjuna uvāca mā māṃ narendra tvamadharmabhāja kṛthā na dharmo'yamaśiṣṭadṛṣṭaḥ| bhavān niveśyaḥ prathamaṃ tato'yaṃ bhīmo mahābāhuracintyakarmā||
Arjuna said: O king, do not hurl me into sin your command is not in consonance with the precepts of virtue. That is the path followed by the sinful. You should marry her first then the mighty armed Bhima of inconceivable feats.

अहं ततो नकुलोऽनन्तरं मे पश्चादयं सहदेवस्तरस्वी। नियं च कन्या भवतो नियोज्याः॥
ahaṃ tato nakulo'nantaraṃ me paścādayaṃ sahadevastarasvī| niyaṃ ca kanyā bhavato niyojyāḥ||
Then myself, then Nakula and then last of all the greatly energetic Sahadeva. O king, Vrikodara, myself, the twins and the maiden all await your command.

एवं गते यत् करणीयमत्र धर्म्यं यशस्यं कुरु तद् विचिन्त्य। पाञ्चालराजस्य हितं च यत् स्यात् प्रशाधि सर्वे स्म वशे स्थितास्ते॥
evaṃ gate yat karaṇīyamatra dharmyaṃ yaśasyaṃ kuru tad vicintya| pāñcālarājasya hitaṃ ca yat syāt praśādhi sarve sma vaśe sthitāste||
When such is the state of things, after due reflection do that which is proper, consonant with virtue, productive of fame and beneficial to the Panchala king. We all obedient to you; command us as you like.

वैशम्पायन उवाच जिष्णोर्वचनमाज्ञाय भक्तिस्नेहसमन्वितम्। दृष्टिं निवेशयामासुः पाञ्चाल्यां पाण्डुनन्दनाः॥
vaiśampāyana uvāca jiṣṇorvacanamājñāya bhaktisnehasamanvitam| dṛṣṭiṃ niveśayāmāsuḥ pāñcālyāṃ pāṇḍunandanāḥ||
Vaishampayana said : Having these words of Jishnu (Arjuna), so full of respect and affection, the sons of Pandu all glanced at the Panchala princess.

दृष्ट्वा ते तत्र पश्यन्तीं सर्वे कृष्णां यशस्विनीम्। सप्रेक्ष्यान्योन्यमासीना हृदयैस्तामधारयन्॥
dṛṣṭvā te tatra paśyantīṃ sarve kṛṣṇāṃ yaśasvinīm| saprekṣyānyonyamāsīnā hṛdayaistāmadhārayan||
She too looked at them all. Glancing at the illustrious Krishna (Draupadi), they looked at one another and taking their seats, they thought of her alone.

तेषां तु द्रौपदी दृष्ट्वा सर्वेषामितौजसाम्। सम्प्रमथ्येन्द्रियग्रामं प्रादुरासीन्मनोभवः॥
teṣāṃ tu draupadī dṛṣṭvā sarveṣāmitaujasām| sampramathyendriyagrāmaṃ prādurāsīnmanobhavaḥ||
When those immeasurably effulgent heroes looked at Draupadi, the god of love invaded their hearts and continued to grind all their senses.

काम्यं हि रूपं पाञ्चाल्या विधात्रा विहितं स्वयम्। बभूवाधिकमन्याभ्यः सर्वभूतमनोहरम्॥
kāmyaṃ hi rūpaṃ pāñcālyā vidhātrā vihitaṃ svayam| babhūvādhikamanyābhyaḥ sarvabhūtamanoharam||
The charming beauty of the Panchala princess was modelled by the Creator himself. It was superior to all and charming to all creatures.

तेषामाकारभावज्ञः कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः। द्वैपायनवचः कृत्स्नं सस्मार मनुजर्षभः॥
teṣāmākārabhāvajñaḥ kuntīputro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ| dvaipāyanavacaḥ kṛtsnaṃ sasmāra manujarṣabhaḥ||
Seeing their demeanour and knowing what was passing through their minds, that best of men, the son of Kunti, Yudhishthira recollected the words of Dvaipayana.

अब्रवीत सहितान् भ्रातॄन् मिथोभेदभयानृपः। सर्वेषां द्रौपदी भार्या भविष्यति हि नः शुभा॥
abravīta sahitān bhrātṝn mithobhedabhayānṛpaḥ| sarveṣāṃ draupadī bhāryā bhaviṣyati hi naḥ śubhā||
Fearing that there might arise disunion amongst the brothers, the king (Yudhishthira) thus spoke, “This blessed Draupadi will be the wife of all of us."

vaiśampāyana uvāca bhrāturvacastat prasamīkṣya sarve jyeṣṭhamya pāṇḍostanayāstadānīm| tamevārthaṃ dhyāyamānā manobhiḥ| sarve ca te tasthuradīnasattvāḥ||
Vaishampayana said : Hearing these words of their eldest brother, the sons of Pandu began to ponder over them in their mind in great joy.

नाशंसमानः सहरौहिणेयः। जगाम तां भार्गवकर्मशाला यत्रासते ते पुरुषप्रवीराः॥
nāśaṃsamānaḥ saharauhiṇeyaḥ| jagāma tāṃ bhārgavakarmaśālā yatrāsate te puruṣapravīrāḥ||
The chief of the Vrishnis (Krishna), with the son of Rohini (Balarama) suspecting them to be the chief of the Kurus, came to the potter's house where those best of men (the Pandavas) were living.

तत्रोपविष्टं पृथुदीर्घबाहुं ददर्श कृष्णः सहरौहिणेयः। प्युपोपविष्टाङ्ग्वलनप्रकाशान्॥
tatropaviṣṭaṃ pṛthudīrghabāhuṃ dadarśa kṛṣṇaḥ saharauhiṇeyaḥ| pyupopaviṣṭāṅgvalanaprakāśān||
Krishna with the son of Rohini (Balarama) saw there seated Ajatashatru of well developed and long arms and sitting round him were his younger brothers, surpassing the splendour of fire.

ततोऽब्रवीद् वासुदेवोऽभिगम्य कुन्तीसुतं धर्मभृतां वरिष्ठम्। कृष्णोऽहमस्मीति निपीड्य पादौ युधिष्ठिरस्याजमीढस्य राज्ञः॥
tato'bravīd vāsudevo'bhigamya kuntīsutaṃ dharmabhṛtāṃ variṣṭham| kṛṣṇo'hamasmīti nipīḍya pādau yudhiṣṭhirasyājamīḍhasya rājñaḥ||
Going to that foremost of all virtuous men, the son of Kunti and touching the feet of that prince of the Ajamida race Yudhishthira, Vasudeva (Krishna) then said, “I am Krishna”.

स्तौ चापि हृष्टाः कुरवोऽभ्यनन्दन्। वगृहणतां भारतमुख्य पादौ॥
stau cāpi hṛṣṭāḥ kuravo'bhyanandan| vagṛhaṇatāṃ bhāratamukhya pādau||
And the son of Rohini (Baladeva) also coming to Yudhishthira did the same. Seeing Krishna and Baladeva, the Pandavas expressed their great delight. O foremost of the Bharata race, those chiefs of the Yadu race (Krishna and Balarama) then touched the feet of (Kunti), the sister of their father.

अजातशत्रुश्च कुरुप्रवीरः पप्रच्छ कृष्णं कुशलं विलोक्य। कथं वयं वासुदेव त्वयेह गूढा वसन्तो विदिताश्च सर्वे॥
ajātaśatruśca kurupravīraḥ papraccha kṛṣṇaṃ kuśalaṃ vilokya| kathaṃ vayaṃ vāsudeva tvayeha gūḍhā vasanto viditāśca sarve||
Seeing Krishna, Ajatashatru, that foremost of the Kuru race, asked him his well-fare and said “O Vasudeva, how have you been able to trace us, living as we are in disguise?”

तमब्रवीद् वासुदेवः प्रहस्य गूढोऽष्यग्निर्ज्ञायत एव राजन्। तं विक्रम पाण्डवेयानतीत्य कोऽन्यः कर्ता विद्यते मानुषेषु॥
tamabravīd vāsudevaḥ prahasya gūḍho'ṣyagnirjñāyata eva rājan| taṃ vikrama pāṇḍaveyānatītya ko'nyaḥ kartā vidyate mānuṣeṣu||
Vasudeva smilingly replied, “O king, fire even if it is covered can easily be known. Who else among men except the Pandavas can perform such feats?

दिष्ट्या सर्वे पावकाद् विप्रमुक्ता यूयं घोरात् पाण्डवाः शत्रुसाहाः। दिष्ट्या पापो धृतराष्ट्रस्य पुत्रः सहामात्यो न सकामोऽभविष्यत्॥
diṣṭyā sarve pāvakād vipramuktā yūyaṃ ghorāt pāṇḍavāḥ śatrusāhāḥ| diṣṭyā pāpo dhṛtarāṣṭrasya putraḥ sahāmātyo na sakāmo'bhaviṣyat||
O Pandavas, O with standers of foes, you have by sheer good fortune escaped from that fearful fire (of the lac house) and also by sheer good fortune the sinful son of Dhritarashtra (Duryodhana) with his ministers have not succeed in their (evil) wishes.

भद्रं वोऽस्तु निहितं यद् गुहायां विवर्धध्वं ज्वलना इवैधमानाः। मा वो विदुः पार्थिवाः केचिदेव यास्यावहे शिविरायैव तावत्। सोऽनुज्ञातः पाण्डवेनाव्ययश्री: प्रायाच्छीघ्रं बलदेवेन सार्धम्॥
bhadraṃ vo'stu nihitaṃ yad guhāyāṃ vivardhadhvaṃ jvalanā ivaidhamānāḥ| mā vo viduḥ pārthivāḥ kecideva yāsyāvahe śivirāyaiva tāvat| so'nujñātaḥ pāṇḍavenāvyayaśrī: prāyācchīghraṃ baladevena sārdham||
Be blessed, Grow in prosperity as a fire in a cave gradually grows and spreads itself all around. Lest any of the kings recognise you, give us permission to return to our camp. Then obtaining the permission of the Pandavas, Krishna of undying prosperity, accompanied with Vasudeva, soon went away.
