गन्धर्व उवाच अथ तस्यामदृश्यायां नृपतिः काममोहितः। पातनः शत्रुसङ्घानां पपात धरणीतले॥

gandharva uvāca atha tasyāmadṛśyāyāṃ nṛpatiḥ kāmamohitaḥ| pātanaḥ śatrusaṅghānāṃ papāta dharaṇītale||

The Gandharva said : On the disappearance of the maiden, that chastiser of foes the king, being deprived of his senses by desire, fell on the ground.

तस्मिन् निपतिते भूमावथ सा चारुहासिनी। पुनः पीनायतश्रोणी दर्शयामास तं नृपम्॥

tasmin nipatite bhūmāvatha sā cāruhāsinī| punaḥ pīnāyataśroṇī darśayāmāsa taṃ nṛpam||

On his falling down on the ground, that maiden of sweet smiles and of swelling and round hips, appeared again before the king.

अथाबभाषे कल्याणी वाचा मधुरया नृपम्। तं कुरूणां कुलकरं कामाभिहतचेतसम्॥

athābabhāṣe kalyāṇī vācā madhurayā nṛpam| taṃ kurūṇāṃ kulakaraṃ kāmābhihatacetasam||

The blessed beauty (Tapati) then spoke to that king, the perpetuator of the Kuru race, these sweet words.

उवाच मधुरं वाक्यं तपती प्रहसन्निव। उत्तिष्ठोत्तिष्ठ भद्रं ते न त्वमर्हस्यरिंदम्॥ मोहं नृपतिशार्दूल गन्तुमाविष्कृतः क्षितौ। एवमुक्तोऽथ नृपतिर्वाचा मधुरया गिरा॥

uvāca madhuraṃ vākyaṃ tapatī prahasanniva| uttiṣṭhottiṣṭha bhadraṃ te na tvamarhasyariṃdam|| mohaṃ nṛpatiśārdūla gantumāviṣkṛtaḥ kṣitau| evamukto'tha nṛpatirvācā madhurayā girā||

Sweetly smiling, Tapati spoke thus in sweet words, “Rise, rise, O chastiser of foes be blessed. O best of kings, you are celebrated in the word, it does not befit you to lose your senses.” Having been thus addressed by her in these sweet words,

ददर्श विपुलश्रोणी तामेवाभिमुखे स्थिताम्। अथ तामसितापाङ्गीमाबभाषे स पार्थिवः॥

dadarśa vipulaśroṇī tāmevābhimukhe sthitām| atha tāmasitāpāṅgīmābabhāṣe sa pārthivaḥ||

The king (opening his eyes) saw before him that maiden of swelling hips. The king then addressed that black eyed maiden thus,

मन्मथाग्निपरीतात्मा संदिग्धाक्षरया गिरा। साधु त्वमसितापाङ्गि कामात मत्तकाशिनि॥ भजस्व भजमानं मां प्राणा हि प्रजहन्ति माम्। त्वदर्थं हि विशालाक्षि मामयं निशितैः शरैः॥ कामः कमलगर्भामे प्रतिविध्यन् न शाम्यति। दष्टमेवमनाक्रन्दे भद्रे काममहाहिना॥

manmathāgniparītātmā saṃdigdhākṣarayā girā| sādhu tvamasitāpāṅgi kāmāta mattakāśini|| bhajasva bhajamānaṃ māṃ prāṇā hi prajahanti mām| tvadarthaṃ hi viśālākṣi māmayaṃ niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ|| kāmaḥ kamalagarbhāme pratividhyan na śāmyati| daṣṭamevamanākrande bhadre kāmamahāhinā||

In accents weak with emotion and his heart burning with the fire of desire, “O black eyed beauty. O excellent lady, be blessed. I am burning with desire; and I, therefore, solicit you. Accept me, my life is ebbing away. O lady of large eyes, O lotus eyed beauty, it is all for (not having obtained) you. The god of love pierces me day and night with his arrows. O blessed lady, I have been bitten by Kama (the god of love) who is like a large snake.

सा त्वं पीनायतश्रोणि मामापनुहि वरानने। त्वदधीना हि मे प्राणाः किन्नरोद्गीतभाषिणि॥१०

sā tvaṃ pīnāyataśroṇi māmāpanuhi varānane| tvadadhīnā hi me prāṇāḥ kinnarodgītabhāṣiṇi||10

O lady of faultless features, O lady of tapering things, O lady of sweet voice as that of the Kinnaris, have mercy on me; my life depends on you.

चारुसर्वानवद्याङ्गि पद्येन्दुप्रतिमानने। न ह्यहं त्वदृते भीरु शक्ष्यामि खलु जीवितुम्॥

cārusarvānavadyāṅgi padyendupratimānane| na hyahaṃ tvadṛte bhīru śakṣyāmi khalu jīvitum||

O lady of beautiful and faultless features, O lady with the face like the lotus or the moon, O timid lady, I shall certainly be unable to live without you.

कामः कमलपत्राक्षि प्रतिविध्यति मामयम्। तस्मात् कुरु विशालाक्षि मय्यनुक्रोशमङ्गने॥

kāmaḥ kamalapatrākṣi pratividhyati māmayam| tasmāt kuru viśālākṣi mayyanukrośamaṅgane||

O lotus eyed lady, O lady of large eyes, the god of love is incessantly piercing me, be merciful towards me.

भक्तं मामसितापाङ्गिन परित्यक्तुमर्हसि। त्वं हि मां प्रीतियोगेन त्रातुमर्हसि भाविनि॥

bhaktaṃ māmasitāpāṅgina parityaktumarhasi| tvaṃ hi māṃ prītiyogena trātumarhasi bhāvini||

O black eyed lady, you should not abandon me. O handsome lady, you should relieve me from such affliction by giving me your love.

त्वदर्शनकृतस्नेहं मनश्चलति मे भृशम्। न त्वां दृष्ट्वा पुनश्चान्यां द्रष्टुं कल्याणि रोचते॥

tvadarśanakṛtasnehaṃ manaścalati me bhṛśam| na tvāṃ dṛṣṭvā punaścānyāṃ draṣṭuṃ kalyāṇi rocate||

O blessed beauty, at the very first sight, my heart has been captivated by you. My mind wanders. Seeing you, I do not like to cast my eyes on any other woman.

प्रसीद वशगोऽहं ते भक्तं मां भज भाविनि। दृष्ट्वैव त्वां वरारोहे मन्मथो भृशमङ्गने॥

prasīda vaśago'haṃ te bhaktaṃ māṃ bhaja bhāvini| dṛṣṭvaiva tvāṃ varārohe manmatho bhṛśamaṅgane||

O beautiful maiden, be merciful, I am your obedient (slave), (I am) your adorer; accept me. O beautiful lady, O large-eyed maiden, as soon as I saw you, he god of love,

अन्तर्गतं विशालाक्षि विध्यति स्म पतत्रिभिः। मन्मथाग्निसमुद्धतं दाहं कमललोचने॥

antargataṃ viśālākṣi vidhyati sma patatribhiḥ| manmathāgnisamuddhataṃ dāhaṃ kamalalocane||

Entered my heart and he is piercing me with his arrows. O large eyed lady, O lotuseyed beauty, the great fire of desire is burning within me.

प्रीतिसंयोगयुक्ताभिरद्भिः प्रह्लादयस्व मे। पुष्पायुधं दुराधर्ष प्रचण्डशरकार्मुकम्॥ त्वदर्शनसमुद्भूतं विध्यन्तं दुस्सहैः शरैः। उपशामय कल्याणि आत्मदानेन भाविनि॥

prītisaṃyogayuktābhiradbhiḥ prahlādayasva me| puṣpāyudhaṃ durādharṣa pracaṇḍaśarakārmukam|| tvadarśanasamudbhūtaṃ vidhyantaṃ dussahaiḥ śaraiḥ| upaśāmaya kalyāṇi ātmadānena bhāvini||

Extinguish that fire by throwing on it the water of your love. O beautiful lady, pacify, by becoming mine, the irrepressible god of love that has appeared here (in my heart) armed with bow and arrows; he pierces me incessantly with his sharp arrows.

गान्धर्वेण विवाहेन मामुपेहि वराङ्गने। विवाहानां हि रम्भोरु गान्धर्वः श्रेष्ठ उच्यते॥

gāndharveṇa vivāhena māmupehi varāṅgane| vivāhānāṃ hi rambhoru gāndharvaḥ śreṣṭha ucyate||

O beautiful featured maiden, O lady of tapering hips, marry me according to the Gandharva form, for of all kinds of marriage the Gandharva form has been said to be the best."

तपत्युवाच नाहमीशाऽऽत्मनो राजन् कन्या पितृमती ह्यहम्। मयि चेदस्ति ते प्रीतिर्याचस्व पितरं मम॥

tapatyuvāca nāhamīśā''tmano rājan kanyā pitṛmatī hyaham| mayi cedasti te prītiryācasva pitaraṃ mama||

Tapati said: O king, I am not the mistress of my ownself. Know me to be a maiden living under the control of my father. If you really love me, ask me of my father.

यथा हि ते मया प्राणा: संगृहीता नरेश्वर। दर्शनादेव भूयस्त्वं तथा प्राणान् ममाहरः॥

yathā hi te mayā prāṇā: saṃgṛhītā nareśvara| darśanādeva bhūyastvaṃ tathā prāṇān mamāharaḥ||

O king, you say that your heart has been robbed by me; but you too have robbed my heart at the first sight.

न चाहमीशा देहस्य तस्मान्नृपतिसत्तम। समीपं नोपगच्छामि न स्वतन्त्रा हि योषितः॥

na cāhamīśā dehasya tasmānnṛpatisattama| samīpaṃ nopagacchāmi na svatantrā hi yoṣitaḥ||

O best of kings, I am not the mistress of my body; therefore I do not go near you. Women are never independent.

का हि सर्वेषु लोकेषु विश्रुताभिजनं नृपम्। कन्या नाभिलषेन्नाथं भर्तारं भक्तवत्सलम्॥

kā hi sarveṣu lokeṣu viśrutābhijanaṃ nṛpam| kanyā nābhilaṣennāthaṃ bhartāraṃ bhaktavatsalam||

Is there any girl in the three worlds who would not desire for her husband such a king as you, kind to all your dependents and born of a noble race.

तस्मादेवं गते काले याचस्व पितरं मम। आदित्यं प्रणिपातेन तपसा नियमेन च॥

tasmādevaṃ gate kāle yācasva pitaraṃ mama| ādityaṃ praṇipātena tapasā niyamena ca||

Therefore, when the opportunity comes, ask me of my father Aditya with due salutation, ascetic penances and vows.

स चेत् कामयते दातुं तव मामरिसूदन। भविष्याम्यद्य ते राजन् सततं वशवर्तिनी॥

sa cet kāmayate dātuṃ tava māmarisūdana| bhaviṣyāmyadya te rājan satataṃ vaśavartinī||

O king, O chastiser of foes, if my father bestows me on you then asked, I shall ever be your obedient (wife).

अहं हि तपती नाम सावित्र्यवरजा सुता। अस्य लोकप्रदीपस्य सवितुः क्षत्रियर्षभ॥

ahaṃ hi tapatī nāma sāvitryavarajā sutā| asya lokapradīpasya savituḥ kṣatriyarṣabha||

My name is Tapati, I am the younger sister of Savitri. O best of Kshatriyas, I am the daughter of Surya, the illuminator of the Universe.
