वैशम्पायन उवाच ते वनेन वनं गत्वा जन्तो मृगगणान् बहून्। अपक्रम्य ययू राजंस्त्वरमाणा महारथाः॥

vaiśampāyana uvāca te vanena vanaṃ gatvā janto mṛgagaṇān bahūn| apakramya yayū rājaṃstvaramāṇā mahārathāḥ||

Vaishampayana said : O king, hose mighty car-warriors the heroes (the Pandavas), went from forest of forest, killing many beasts. In course of their travel and they crossed many forests (came to).

मत्स्यांस्त्रिगर्तान् पञ्चालान् कीचकानन्तरेण च। रमणीयान् वनोद्देशान् प्रेक्षमाणाः सरांसि च॥

matsyāṃstrigartān pañcālān kīcakānantareṇa ca| ramaṇīyān vanoddeśān prekṣamāṇāḥ sarāṃsi ca||

The countries of the Matsyas, Trigartas and Panchalas, then to that of the Kichakas, where they saw mane beautiful woods and lakes.

जटाः कृत्वाऽऽत्मनः सर्वे वल्कलाजिनवाससः। सह कुन्त्या महात्मानो बिभ्रतस्तापसं वपुः॥ क्वचिद् वहन्तो जननीं त्वरमाणा महारथाः। क्वचिच्छन्देन गच्छन्तस्ते जग्मुः प्रसभं पुनः॥

jaṭāḥ kṛtvā''tmanaḥ sarve valkalājinavāsasaḥ| saha kuntyā mahātmāno bibhratastāpasaṃ vapuḥ|| kvacid vahanto jananīṃ tvaramāṇā mahārathāḥ| kvacicchandena gacchantaste jagmuḥ prasabhaṃ punaḥ||

They all made matted locks and wore the barks of trees. Those illustrious (heroes) assumed the form of ascetics with their mother. Those car-warriors some times proceeded in haste, carrying their mother, (on their back) sometimes they proceeded slowly; they then went in great haste.

ब्राह्यं वेदमधीयाना वेदाङ्गानि च सर्वशः। नीतिशास्त्रं च सर्वज्ञा ददृशुस्ते पितामहम्॥

brāhyaṃ vedamadhīyānā vedāṅgāni ca sarvaśaḥ| nītiśāstraṃ ca sarvajñā dadṛśuste pitāmaham||

They studied the Brahma (Rik) and the Vedangas and all other sciences of morals. (When they were thus engaged), they saw their grandfather (Vyasa).

तेऽभिवाद्य महात्मानं कृष्णद्वैपायनं तदा। तस्थुः प्राञ्जल्यः सर्वे सह मात्रा परंतपाः॥

te'bhivādya mahātmānaṃ kṛṣṇadvaipāyanaṃ tadā| tasthuḥ prāñjalyaḥ sarve saha mātrā paraṃtapāḥ||

Having respectfully saluted the illustrious Krishna Dvaipayana those chastisers of foes with their mother stood before him with joined hands.

व्यास उवाच मयेदं व्यसनं पूर्वं विदितं भरतर्षभाः। यथा तु तैरधर्मेण धात्रारष्टैर्विवासिताः॥ तद् विदित्वास्मि सम्प्राप्तश्चिकीर्षुः परमं हितम्। न विषादोऽन्न कर्तव्यः सर्वमेतत् सुखाय वः॥

vyāsa uvāca mayedaṃ vyasanaṃ pūrvaṃ viditaṃ bharatarṣabhāḥ| yathā tu tairadharmeṇa dhātrāraṣṭairvivāsitāḥ|| tad viditvāsmi samprāptaścikīrṣuḥ paramaṃ hitam| na viṣādo'nna kartavyaḥ sarvametat sukhāya vaḥ||

Vyasa said : O best of the Bharata race, I knew beforehand of your this affection, your this unjust banishment by the sons of Dhritarashtra. Knowing this I have come to do you some great good. You ought not to grieve. Know all this is for your (future) happiness.

समास्ते चैव मे सर्वे यूयं न संशयः। दीनतो बालतश्चैव स्नेहं कुर्वन्ति मानवाः। तस्मादभ्यधिकः स्नेहो युष्मासु मम साम्प्रतम्॥ स्नेहपूर्वं चिकीर्षामि हितं वस्तन्निबोधत। इदं नगरमभ्याशे रमणीयं निरामयम्। वसतह प्रतिच्छन्ना ममागमनकाक्षिणः॥

samāste caiva me sarve yūyaṃ na saṃśayaḥ| dīnato bālataścaiva snehaṃ kurvanti mānavāḥ| tasmādabhyadhikaḥ sneho yuṣmāsu mama sāmpratam|| snehapūrvaṃ cikīrṣāmi hitaṃ vastannibodhata| idaṃ nagaramabhyāśe ramaṇīyaṃ nirāmayam| vasataha praticchannā mamāgamanakākṣiṇaḥ||

There is no doubt that you and they all are equal in my eyes; but men love more those that are in misfortune or in tender years. Therefore my love for you is now greater (then before) and in consequence of the love, I wish to do you some good. Listen to me. Not far from this place there is a beautiful town which is a safe place for you. There live you all in disguise, waiting for my return.

वैशम्पायन उवाच एवं स तान् समाश्वस्य व्यासः सत्यवतीसुतः। एकचक्रामभिगतः कुन्तीमाश्वासयत् प्रभुः॥

vaiśampāyana uvāca evaṃ sa tān samāśvasya vyāsaḥ satyavatīsutaḥ| ekacakrāmabhigataḥ kuntīmāśvāsayat prabhuḥ||

Vaishampayana said : Having thus comforted them, the son of a Satyavati, Vyasa, led them to (the town of) Ekachakra. The lord (Vyasa) comforted Kunti also.

व्यास उवाच जीवत्पुत्रि सुतस्तेऽयं धर्मनित्यो युधिष्ठिरः। धर्मेण पृथिवीं जित्वा महात्मा पुरुषर्षभः। पृथिव्यां पार्थिवान् सर्वान् प्रशासिष्यति धर्मराट्॥

vyāsa uvāca jīvatputri sutaste'yaṃ dharmanityo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ| dharmeṇa pṛthivīṃ jitvā mahātmā puruṣarṣabhaḥ| pṛthivyāṃ pārthivān sarvān praśāsiṣyati dharmarāṭ||

Vyasa said: O daughter, live your this son, the illustrious and the best of men, Yudhisthira, ever devoted to virtue, conquering the word by his virtue will virtuously rule over all the kings of the world.

पृथिवीमखिलां जित्वा सर्वां सागरमेखलाम्। भीमसेनार्जुनबलाद् भोक्ष्यते नात्र संशयः॥

pṛthivīmakhilāṃ jitvā sarvāṃ sāgaramekhalām| bhīmasenārjunabalād bhokṣyate nātra saṃśayaḥ||

Conquering the whole earth bounded by the belt of the sea by the prowess of Bhima and Arjuna, there is no doubt (he will rule the world).

पुत्रास्तव च माद्याश्च सर्व एव महारथाः। स्वराष्ट्रे विहरिष्यन्ति सुखं सुमनसः सदा॥

putrāstava ca mādyāśca sarva eva mahārathāḥ| svarāṣṭre vihariṣyanti sukhaṃ sumanasaḥ sadā||

Your sons and those of Madri, all great car warriors, will sport in their own kingdom at pleasure.

यक्ष्यन्ति च नरव्याघ्रा निर्जित्य पृथिवीमिमाम्। राजसूयाश्वमेधाद्यैः क्रतुभिर्भूरिदक्षिणैः॥

yakṣyanti ca naravyāghrā nirjitya pṛthivīmimām| rājasūyāśvamedhādyaiḥ kratubhirbhūridakṣiṇaiḥ||

Conquering the whole world, these best of men will perform Rajasuya and Ashvamedha and other sacrifices in which Dakshina (presents to the Brahmanas) will be very large.

अनुगृह्य सुहृद्वर्ग भोगैश्वर्यसुखेन च। पितृपैतामहं राज्यमिमे भोक्ष्यन्ति ते सुताः॥

anugṛhya suhṛdvarga bhogaiśvaryasukhena ca| pitṛpaitāmahaṃ rājyamime bhokṣyanti te sutāḥ||

Maintaining their friends and relatives in luxury and affluence, these your so will rule over the kingdom of their forefathers.

वैशम्पायन उवाच एवमुक्त्वा निवेश्यैनान् ब्राह्मणस्य निवेशने। अब्रवीत् पाण्डवश्रेष्ठमृषिद्वैपायनस्तदा॥

vaiśampāyana uvāca evamuktvā niveśyainān brāhmaṇasya niveśane| abravīt pāṇḍavaśreṣṭhamṛṣidvaipāyanastadā||

Vaishampayana said : Having said this, he took them to the house of a Brahmana and then Rishi Dvaipayana spoke thus to the eldest Pandava-

इह मासं प्रतीक्षध्वमागमिष्याम्यहं पुनः। देशकालौ विदित्वैव लप्स्यध्वं परमां मुदम्॥

iha māsaṃ pratīkṣadhvamāgamiṣyāmyahaṃ punaḥ| deśakālau viditvaiva lapsyadhvaṃ paramāṃ mudam||

“Wait here for me. I shall come back to you. You will be able to obtain great happiness by adopting yourself to the place and time (in which you are now).”

स तैः प्राञ्जलिभिः सर्वैस्तथेत्युक्तो नराधिप। जगाम भगवान् व्यासो यथागतमृषिः प्रभुः॥

sa taiḥ prāñjalibhiḥ sarvaistathetyukto narādhipa| jagāma bhagavān vyāso yathāgatamṛṣiḥ prabhuḥ||

O king, they all said with joined hands, "Be it so." (Thereupon) the illustrious lord, the Rishi Vyasa, went away from whence he came.
