भीमसेन उवाच स्मरन्ति वैरं रक्षांसि मायामाश्रित्य मोहिनीम्। हिडिम्बे व्रज पन्थानं त्वमिमं भ्रातृसेवितम्॥

bhīmasena uvāca smaranti vairaṃ rakṣāṃsi māyāmāśritya mohinīm| hiḍimbe vraja panthānaṃ tvamimaṃ bhrātṛsevitam||

Bhima said: woman even The Rakshasas revenge themselves on their enemy by alluring deceptions. Therefore, O Hidimba, go to the way that your brother has gone.

युधिष्ठिर उवाच क्रुद्धोऽपि पुरुषव्याघ्र भीम मा स्म स्त्रियं वधीः। शरीरगुप्त्यभ्यधिकं धर्मं गोपाय पाण्डव॥

yudhiṣṭhira uvāca kruddho'pi puruṣavyāghra bhīma mā sma striyaṃ vadhīḥ| śarīraguptyabhyadhikaṃ dharmaṃ gopāya pāṇḍava||

Yudhisthira said: O best of men, O Bhima do not kill a in anger. O Pandava, the attainment of virtue is a higher duty than the protection of body.

वधाभिप्रायमायान्तमधीस्त्वं महाबलम्। रक्षसस्तस्य भगिनी किं न: क्रुद्धा करिष्यति॥

vadhābhiprāyamāyāntamadhīstvaṃ mahābalam| rakṣasastasya bhaginī kiṃ na: kruddhā kariṣyati||

You have killed the greatly powerful (Rakshasas) who came with the purpose of killing us. She is (but) his sister, what can she do to us, even if she is angry?

वैशम्पायन उवाच हिडिम्बा तु ततः कुन्तीमभिवाद्य कृताञ्जलिः। युधिष्ठिरं तु कौन्तेयमिदं वचनमब्रवीत्॥ आर्ये जानासि यद् दुःखमिह स्त्रीणामनङ्गजम्। तदिदं मामनुप्राप्तं भीमसेनकृतं शुभे॥

vaiśampāyana uvāca hiḍimbā tu tataḥ kuntīmabhivādya kṛtāñjaliḥ| yudhiṣṭhiraṃ tu kaunteyamidaṃ vacanamabravīt|| ārye jānāsi yad duḥkhamiha strīṇāmanaṅgajam| tadidaṃ māmanuprāptaṃ bhīmasenakṛtaṃ śubhe||

Vaishampayana said : Thereupon, Hidimba respectfully saluting Kunti and Yudhisthira with joined hands, spoke to Kunti thus, “O respected lady, you know the pangs that women suffer from the god of love. O blessed lady, I have received those (pangs) by Bhima.

सोढं तत् परमं दुःखं मया कालप्रतीक्षया। सोऽयमभ्यागतः कालो भविता मे सुखोदयः॥

soḍhaṃ tat paramaṃ duḥkhaṃ mayā kālapratīkṣayā| so'yamabhyāgataḥ kālo bhavitā me sukhodayaḥ||

I have suffered these great pangs and I wait for the time (when it will be assuaged). That time has now come, when I expect that my happiness would come.

मा ह्युयत्सृज्य सुहृदः स्वधर्म स्वजनं तथा। वृतोऽयं पुरुषव्याघ्रस्तव पुत्रः पतिः शुभे॥

mā hyuyatsṛjya suhṛdaḥ svadharma svajanaṃ tathā| vṛto'yaṃ puruṣavyāghrastava putraḥ patiḥ śubhe||

O blessed lady, leaving my friends relatives and religion, I have chosen this best of men, this son of yours, as my husband.

वीरेणाहं तथानेन त्वया चापि यशस्विनि। प्रत्याख्याता न जीवामि सत्यमेतद् ब्रवीमि ते॥

vīreṇāhaṃ tathānena tvayā cāpi yaśasvini| pratyākhyātā na jīvāmi satyametad bravīmi te||

O illustrious lady, if forsaken by this hero and yourself I shall not live any longer, I tell you this truly.

तदर्हसि कृपां कर्तुं मयि त्वं वरवर्णिनि। मत्वा मूढेति तन्मा त्वं भक्ता वानुगतेति वा॥

tadarhasi kṛpāṃ kartuṃ mayi tvaṃ varavarṇini| matvā mūḍheti tanmā tvaṃ bhaktā vānugateti vā||

O greatly beautiful lady, you should show compassion towards me, considering me foolish or very obedient to you.

भानेन महाभागे संयोजय सुतेन ह। तमुपादाय गच्छेयं यथेष्टं देवरूपिणम्। पुनश्चैवानयिष्यामि विस्रम्भं कुरु मे शुभे॥

bhānena mahābhāge saṃyojaya sutena ha| tamupādāya gaccheyaṃ yatheṣṭaṃ devarūpiṇam| punaścaivānayiṣyāmi visrambhaṃ kuru me śubhe||

O greatly fortunate lady, unite me with my husband, your son. Let me go away at pleasure (wherever I like), taking this celestial like (hero). Trust me, O blessed lady, I shall bring him back to you all.

अहं हि मनसा ध्याता सर्वान् नेष्यामि वः सदा। वृजिनात् तारयिष्यामि दुर्गेषु विषमेषु च॥ पृष्ठेन वो वहिष्यामि शीघ्रं गतिमभीप्सतः। यूयं प्रसादं कुरुत भीमसेनो भजेत माम्॥

ahaṃ hi manasā dhyātā sarvān neṣyāmi vaḥ sadā| vṛjināt tārayiṣyāmi durgeṣu viṣameṣu ca|| pṛṣṭhena vo vahiṣyāmi śīghraṃ gatimabhīpsataḥ| yūyaṃ prasādaṃ kuruta bhīmaseno bhajeta mām||

Whenever you will think of me I will immediately come to you and carry you wherever you will command. I shall rescue you from danger over even and uneven grounds. I shall carry you on my back whenever you will desire to proceed with speed. Be gracious to me and make Bhimasena accept me.

आपदस्तरणे प्राणान् धारयेद् येन तेन वा। सर्वमावृत्य कर्तव्यं तं धर्ममनुवर्तता॥

āpadastaraṇe prāṇān dhārayed yena tena vā| sarvamāvṛtya kartavyaṃ taṃ dharmamanuvartatā||

It is consonant with the precepts of religion that one should protect his life by any means. He, who seeks to do it, should not scruple about the means.

आपत्सु यो धारयति धर्म धर्मविदुत्तमः। व्यसनं ह्येव धर्मस्य धर्मिणामापदुच्यते॥

āpatsu yo dhārayati dharma dharmaviduttamaḥ| vyasanaṃ hyeva dharmasya dharmiṇāmāpaducyate||

He who keeps his virtue (even) in distress in the foremost of all virtuous men. Distress is the greatest danger to virtue and virtuous men.

पुण्यं प्राणान् धारयति पुण्यं प्राणदमुच्यते। येन येनाचरेद् धर्मं तस्मिन् गर्दा न विद्यते॥

puṇyaṃ prāṇān dhārayati puṇyaṃ prāṇadamucyate| yena yenācared dharmaṃ tasmin gardā na vidyate||

'It is virtue that protect life and therefore virtue is called the giver of life. The means by which virtue is secured be censurable.'

युधिष्ठिर उवाच एवमेतद् यथाऽऽत्थ त्वं हिडिम्बे नात्र संशयः। स्थातव्यं तु त्वया सत्ये यथा ब्रूयां सुमध्यमे॥

yudhiṣṭhira uvāca evametad yathā''ttha tvaṃ hiḍimbe nātra saṃśayaḥ| sthātavyaṃ tu tvayā satye yathā brūyāṃ sumadhyame||

Yudhisthira said: Hidimba, there is no doubt of that what you say is true. O lady of slender waist, you must act as you have said (you want to do).

स्नातं कृताछिकं भद्रे कृतकौतुकमङ्गलम्। भीमसेनं भजेथास्त्वं प्रागस्तगमनाद् रवेः॥

snātaṃ kṛtāchikaṃ bhadre kṛtakautukamaṅgalam| bhīmasenaṃ bhajethāstvaṃ prāgastagamanād raveḥ||

O blessed lady, when Bhimasena will finished ablutions, twilight prayer and the usual propitiatory rites you will then be adored by him till the sun sets.

अहस्सु विहरानेन यथाकामं मनोजवा। अयं त्वानयितव्यस्ते भीमसेनः सदा निशि॥

ahassu viharānena yathākāmaṃ manojavā| ayaṃ tvānayitavyaste bhīmasenaḥ sadā niśi||

O lady of mind like speed, sport with him at pleasure during the day. You must always bring Bhimasena back every night. can never

॥ वैशम्पायन उवाच तथेति तत् प्रतिज्ञाय भीमसेनोऽब्रवीदिदम्। शृणु राक्षसि सत्येन समयं ते वदाम्यहम्॥

|| vaiśampāyana uvāca tatheti tat pratijñāya bhīmaseno'bravīdidam| śṛṇu rākṣasi satyena samayaṃ te vadāmyaham||

Vaishampayana said : Having promised to do it by saying, “Be it so", Bhima said (to Hidimba), “O Rakshasi, listen to the agreement that I make with you.

यावत् कालेन भवति पुत्रस्योत्पादन शुभे। तावत् कालं गमिष्यामि त्वया सह सुमध्यमे॥

yāvat kālena bhavati putrasyotpādana śubhe| tāvat kālaṃ gamiṣyāmi tvayā saha sumadhyame||

O blessed lady, O lady of slender waist, I shall go (and stay) with you, so long you do not obtain a son."

वैशम्पायन उवाच तथेति तत् प्रतिज्ञाय हिडिम्बा राक्षसी तदा। भीमसेनमुपादाय सोर्ध्वमाचक्रमे ततः॥

vaiśampāyana uvāca tatheti tat pratijñāya hiḍimbā rākṣasī tadā| bhīmasenamupādāya sordhvamācakrame tataḥ||

Having promised this by saying, “Be it so," the Rakshasi Hidimba took Bhima upon her body and went up to the sky.

शैलशृङ्गेषु रम्येषु देवतायतनेषु च। मृगपक्षिविघुष्टेषु रमणीयेषु सर्वदा॥ कृत्वा च परमं रूपं सर्वाभरणभूषिता। संजल्पन्ती सुमधुरं रमयामास पाण्डवम्॥ तथैव वनदुर्गेषु पुष्पितदुमवल्लिषु। सरस्सु रमणीयेषु पद्मोत्पलयुतेषु च॥ नदीद्वीपप्रदेशेषु वैदूर्यसिकतासु च। सुतीर्थवनतोयासु तथा गिरिनदीषु च॥ काननेषु विचित्रेषु पुष्पितद्रुमवल्लिषु। हिमवद्गिरिकुञ्जेषु गुहासु विविधासु च॥ प्रफुल्लशतपत्रेषु सरस्खमलवारिषु। सागरस्य प्रदेशेषु मणिहेमचितेषु च॥ पल्वलेषु च रम्येषु महाशालवनेषु च। देवारण्येषु पुण्येषु तथा पर्वतसानुषु॥ गुह्यकानां निवासेषु तापसायतनेषु च। सर्वर्तुफलरम्येषु मानसेषु सरस्सु च॥ बिभ्रती परमं रूपं रमयामास पाण्डवम्। रमयन्ती तथा भीमं तत्र तत्र मनोजवा॥

śailaśṛṅgeṣu ramyeṣu devatāyataneṣu ca| mṛgapakṣivighuṣṭeṣu ramaṇīyeṣu sarvadā|| kṛtvā ca paramaṃ rūpaṃ sarvābharaṇabhūṣitā| saṃjalpantī sumadhuraṃ ramayāmāsa pāṇḍavam|| tathaiva vanadurgeṣu puṣpitadumavalliṣu| sarassu ramaṇīyeṣu padmotpalayuteṣu ca|| nadīdvīpapradeśeṣu vaidūryasikatāsu ca| sutīrthavanatoyāsu tathā girinadīṣu ca|| kānaneṣu vicitreṣu puṣpitadrumavalliṣu| himavadgirikuñjeṣu guhāsu vividhāsu ca|| praphullaśatapatreṣu saraskhamalavāriṣu| sāgarasya pradeśeṣu maṇihemaciteṣu ca|| palvaleṣu ca ramyeṣu mahāśālavaneṣu ca| devāraṇyeṣu puṇyeṣu tathā parvatasānuṣu|| guhyakānāṃ nivāseṣu tāpasāyataneṣu ca| sarvartuphalaramyeṣu mānaseṣu sarassu ca|| bibhratī paramaṃ rūpaṃ ramayāmāsa pāṇḍavam| ramayantī tathā bhīmaṃ tatra tatra manojavā||

Assuming the handsomest form, decked with all ornaments and pouring forth at times sweet music, she sported with the Pandava (Bhima) on the mountain peaks of picturesque scenery and in regions sacred to the celestial, abounding with beasts and birds. Also in forests and mountain fastness, overgrown with blossoming trees, in beautiful lake; resplendent with lotuses and lilies. On island of rivers, on the pebbled banks of streamlets, in sylvan streamlets with beautiful banks and also in mountain streams. In beautiful woods with blossoming trees, in the Himalayan bowers and in various mountains caves. In the crystal water of the lakes, smiling with lotuses, on the shores of the sea shinning with gold and pearls. In beautiful towns and fine gardens, in woods sacred to the gods and on the breast of hills. In the land of the Guhyakas and the hermitages of the ascetics on the banks of the Manasa lake, abounding with fruits and flowers of every season. Assuming the handsome form, she sported with the Pandava (Bhima). The lady with the mind like speed sported with Bhima in these places.

प्रजज्ञे राक्षसी पुत्रं भीमसंनान्महाबलम्। विरूपाक्षं महावक्त्रं शरूकर्णं विभीषणम्॥

prajajñe rākṣasī putraṃ bhīmasaṃnānmahābalam| virūpākṣaṃ mahāvaktraṃ śarūkarṇaṃ vibhīṣaṇam||

She then gave birth by Bhima a greatly strong son of terrible eyes and large mouth, of ears like arrows and of appearance fearful.

भीमनादं सुताम्राष्ठं तीक्ष्णदंष्ट्रं महाबलम्। महेष्वासं महावीर्यं महासत्त्वं महाभुजम्॥ महाजवं महाकायं महामायमरिंदमम्। दीर्घघोणं महोरस्कं विकटोबद्धपिण्डिकम्॥ अमानुषं मानुषजं भीमवेगं महाबलम्। यः पिशाचनतीत्यान्यान् बभूवातीव राक्षसान्॥

bhīmanādaṃ sutāmrāṣṭhaṃ tīkṣṇadaṃṣṭraṃ mahābalam| maheṣvāsaṃ mahāvīryaṃ mahāsattvaṃ mahābhujam|| mahājavaṃ mahākāyaṃ mahāmāyamariṃdamam| dīrghaghoṇaṃ mahoraskaṃ vikaṭobaddhapiṇḍikam|| amānuṣaṃ mānuṣajaṃ bhīmavegaṃ mahābalam| yaḥ piśācanatītyānyān babhūvātīva rākṣasān||

Of roaring voice, of lips brown as copper, of teeth sharp and keen. He was mighty armed, greatly energetic, exceedingly powerful and a great car warrior. Having long nose, broad chest, frightfully swelling calves, celerity of motion and excessive strength, he had nothing human in him, though born of a man. He excelled all the Pishachas and other such creatures and also the Rakshasas.

बालोऽपि यौवनं प्राप्तो मानुषेषु विशाम्पते। सर्वास्त्रेषु परं वीरः प्रकर्षमगमद् बली॥

bālo'pi yauvanaṃ prāpto mānuṣeṣu viśāmpate| sarvāstreṣu paraṃ vīraḥ prakarṣamagamad balī||

He grew up to be a youth when he was a boy and that mighty hero soon acquainted high proficiency in all arms and weapons known amongst mankind.

सद्यो हि गर्भान् राक्षस्यो लभन्ते प्रसवन्ति च। कामरूपधराश्चैव भवन्ति बहुरूपिकाः॥

sadyo hi garbhān rākṣasyo labhante prasavanti ca| kāmarūpadharāścaiva bhavanti bahurūpikāḥ||

The Rakshasas women give birth on the very day they conceive; they are capable of assuming any form at will and they change their forms (at will).

प्रणम्य विकचः पादावगृहणात् स पितुस्तदा। मातुश्च परमेष्वासस्तौ च नामास्य चक्रतुः॥

praṇamya vikacaḥ pādāvagṛhaṇāt sa pitustadā| mātuśca parameṣvāsastau ca nāmāsya cakratuḥ||

That bad featured child, that mighty bowman, soon after his birth, bowed down to his mother and also to his father and touched their feet. They then named him.

घटो हास्योत्कच इति माता तं प्रत्यभाषत। अब्रवीत् तेन नामास्य घटोत्कच इति स्म ह॥

ghaṭo hāsyotkaca iti mātā taṃ pratyabhāṣata| abravīt tena nāmāsya ghaṭotkaca iti sma ha||

His mother said, "This child's head is like a Ghata (water pot)." They then gave him the name of Ghatotkacha.

अनुरक्तश्च तानासीत् पाण्डवान् स घटोत्कच। तेषां च दयितो नित्यमात्मनित्यो बभूव ह॥

anuraktaśca tānāsīt pāṇḍavān sa ghaṭotkaca| teṣāṃ ca dayito nityamātmanityo babhūva ha||

Ghatotkacha was (very much) attached to the Pandavas. he became a great favourite with them, almost one of them.

संवाससमयो जीर्ण इत्याभाष्य ततस्तु तान्। हिडिम्बा समयं कृत्वा स्वां गतिं प्रत्यपद्यत॥

saṃvāsasamayo jīrṇa ityābhāṣya tatastu tān| hiḍimbā samayaṃ kṛtvā svāṃ gatiṃ pratyapadyata||

Knowing that the period of her stay with the (Pandava) had come to an end, Hidimba making another agreement with them went away wherever she like.

घटोत्कचो महाकायः पाण्डवान् पृथया सह। अभिवाद्य यथान्यायमब्रवीच्च प्रभाष्य तान्॥ किं करोम्यहमार्याणां निःशङ्कं वदतानघाः। तं ब्रुवन्तं भैमसेनि कुन्ती वचनमब्रवीत्॥

ghaṭotkaco mahākāyaḥ pāṇḍavān pṛthayā saha| abhivādya yathānyāyamabravīcca prabhāṣya tān|| kiṃ karomyahamāryāṇāṃ niḥśaṅkaṃ vadatānaghāḥ| taṃ bruvantaṃ bhaimaseni kuntī vacanamabravīt||

Thereafter giant Ghatotkacha bowed down to the Pandavas with Kunti, and told them, O sinless great men, you may tell me what I have to do. Thus addressed by him, Kunti spoke to the scn of Bhima.

त्वं कुरूणां कुले जातः साक्षाद् भीमसमो ह्यसि। ज्येष्ठः पुत्रोऽसि पञ्चानां साहाय्यं कुरु पुत्रक॥

tvaṃ kurūṇāṃ kule jātaḥ sākṣād bhīmasamo hyasi| jyeṣṭhaḥ putro'si pañcānāṃ sāhāyyaṃ kuru putraka||

You are born in the race of Kuru and are the same as Bhima. You are the eldest son of five. O son! help us.

वैशम्पायन उवाच पृथयाप्येवमुक्तस्तु प्रणम्यैव वचोऽब्रवीत्। यथा हि रावणो लोके इन्द्रजिच्च महाबलः। वर्मवीर्यसमो लोके विशिष्टश्चाभवं नृषु॥

vaiśampāyana uvāca pṛthayāpyevamuktastu praṇamyaiva vaco'bravīt| yathā hi rāvaṇo loke indrajicca mahābalaḥ| varmavīryasamo loke viśiṣṭaścābhavaṃ nṛṣu||

Vaishampayana said : Thus addressed by Kunti, he replied respectfully-Just as there are in this world Ravana and Meghanada who were very strong, so also I am gigantic and valorous among the men of this world; in fact I am greater than any.

कृत्यकाल उपस्थास्ये पितृनिति घटोत्कचः। आमन्त्र्य रक्षसां श्रेष्ठः प्रतस्थे चोत्तरां दिशम्॥

kṛtyakāla upasthāsye pitṛniti ghaṭotkacaḥ| āmantrya rakṣasāṃ śreṣṭhaḥ pratasthe cottarāṃ diśam||

That best Rakshasas, Ghatotkacha, promising to come when required for business, went away towards the north.

स हि सृष्टो मघवता शक्तिहेतोर्महात्मना। कर्णस्याप्रतिवीर्यस्य प्रतियोद्धा महारथः॥

sa hi sṛṣṭo maghavatā śaktihetormahātmanā| karṇasyāprativīryasya pratiyoddhā mahārathaḥ||

That great car warrior (Ghatotkacha) was created by the illustrious Indra as a proper antagonist of Karna of matchless power in consequence of the weapon (he gave him).
