वैशम्पायन उवाच प्रबुद्धास्ते हिडिम्बाया रूपं दृष्ट्वातिमानुषम्। विस्मिताः पुरुषव्याघ्रा बभूवुः पृथया सह॥

vaiśampāyana uvāca prabuddhāste hiḍimbāyā rūpaṃ dṛṣṭvātimānuṣam| vismitāḥ puruṣavyāghrā babhūvuḥ pṛthayā saha||

Vaishampayana said : Rising from sleep, those best of men (the Pandavas) with their mother were filled with astonishment on seeing the extraordinary beauty of Hidimba.

ततः कुन्ती समीक्ष्यैनां विस्मिता रूपसम्पदा। उवाच मधुरं वाक्यं सान्त्वपूर्वमिदं शनैः॥ कस्य त्वं सुरगर्भाभे का वासि वरवर्णिनि। केन कार्येण सम्प्राप्ता कुतश्चागमनं तव॥

tataḥ kuntī samīkṣyaināṃ vismitā rūpasampadā| uvāca madhuraṃ vākyaṃ sāntvapūrvamidaṃ śanaiḥ|| kasya tvaṃ suragarbhābhe kā vāsi varavarṇini| kena kāryeṇa samprāptā kutaścāgamanaṃ tava||

Thereupon being astonished with her beauty, Kunti slowly addressed in sweet orders and give her all assurance. "O celestial beautiful maid, O beautiful one, who and whose are you? For what business have you come here and from what place have you come?

यदि वास्य वनस्य त्वं देवता यदि वाप्सराः। आचक्ष्व मम तत् सर्वं किमर्थं चेह तिष्ठसि॥

yadi vāsya vanasya tvaṃ devatā yadi vāpsarāḥ| ācakṣva mama tat sarvaṃ kimarthaṃ ceha tiṣṭhasi||

Are you the deity of this forest or (are you) an Apsara? Tell me all why you are sitting here."

हिडिम्बोवाच यदेतत् पश्यसि वनं नीलमेघनिभं महत्। निवासो राक्षसस्यैष हिडिम्बस्य ममैव च॥

hiḍimbovāca yadetat paśyasi vanaṃ nīlameghanibhaṃ mahat| nivāso rākṣasasyaiṣa hiḍimbasya mamaiva ca||

Hidimba said: The blue cloud like great forest that you see is the abode of mine and that of my brother, Rakshasas Hidimba.

तस्य मां राक्षसेन्द्रस्य भगिनीं विद्धि भाविनी। भ्रात्रा सम्प्रेषितामार्ये त्वां सपुत्रां जिघांसता॥

tasya māṃ rākṣasendrasya bhaginīṃ viddhi bhāvinī| bhrātrā sampreṣitāmārye tvāṃ saputrāṃ jighāṃsatā||

O amiable lady, know me as being the sister of the Rakshasas chief. O respected madarn, I was sent by my brother to kill you with your sons.

क्रूरबुद्धेरहं तस्य वचनादागता त्विह। अद्राक्षं नवहेमाभं तव पुत्रं महाबलम्॥

krūrabuddherahaṃ tasya vacanādāgatā tviha| adrākṣaṃ navahemābhaṃ tava putraṃ mahābalam||

Coming here at the command of that cruelminded (Rakshasas), I saw your greatly powerful son of the colour of pure gold.

ततोऽहं सर्वभूतानां भावे विचरता शुभे। चोदिता तव पुत्रस्य मन्मथेन वशानुगा॥

tato'haṃ sarvabhūtānāṃ bhāve vicaratā śubhe| coditā tava putrasya manmathena vaśānugā||

O blessed lady, I was brought under the control of your son by the god of love who pervades the nature of everything.

ततो वृतो मया भर्ता तव पुत्रो महाबलः। अपनेतुं च यतितो न चैव शकितो मया॥

tato vṛto mayā bhartā tava putro mahābalaḥ| apanetuṃ ca yatito na caiva śakito mayā||

I then chose your greatly powerful son as my husband. Through I tried to suppress this passion, I could not.

चिरायमाणां मां ज्ञात्वा ततः स पुरुषादकः। स्वयमेवागतो हन्तुमिमान् सर्वांस्तवात्मजान्॥

स तेन मम कान्तेन तव पुत्रेण धीमता। बलादितो विनिष्पिष्य व्यपनीतो महात्मना॥

sa tena mama kāntena tava putreṇa dhīmatā| balādito viniṣpiṣya vyapanīto mahātmanā||

विकर्षन्तौ महावेगौ गर्जमानौ परस्परम्। पश्यैवं युधि विक्रान्तावेतौ च नरराक्षसौ॥

vikarṣantau mahāvegau garjamānau parasparam| paśyaivaṃ yudhi vikrāntāvetau ca nararākṣasau||

Behold the man and the Rakshasas, both endued with great strength and prowess, (now) engaged in combat, pressing each other with great force and filling the whole region with their roars.

वैशम्पायन उवाच तस्याः श्रुत्वैव वचनमुत्पपात युधिष्ठिरः। अर्जुनो नकुलश्चैव सहदेवश्च वीर्यवान्॥

vaiśampāyana uvāca tasyāḥ śrutvaiva vacanamutpapāta yudhiṣṭhiraḥ| arjuno nakulaścaiva sahadevaśca vīryavān||

Vaishampayana said : Hearing her these words, Yudhisthira, Arjuna, Nakula and the powerful Sahadeva hastily rose up.

तौ ते ददृशुरासक्तौ विकर्षन्तौ परस्परम्। काडक्षमाणौ जयं चैव सिंहाविव बलोत्कटौ॥

tau te dadṛśurāsaktau vikarṣantau parasparam| kāḍakṣamāṇau jayaṃ caiva siṃhāviva balotkaṭau||

They saw those two (Bhima and Hidimba) already engaged in fight; they were dragging each other, (both) eager to overcome each other like two greatly strong lions.

अथान्योन्यं समाश्लिष्य विकर्षन्तौ पुनः पुनः। दावाग्निधूमसदृशं चक्रतुः पार्थिवं रजः॥

athānyonyaṃ samāśliṣya vikarṣantau punaḥ punaḥ| dāvāgnidhūmasadṛśaṃ cakratuḥ pārthivaṃ rajaḥ||

They clasped and pressed each other again and again. The dust of the earth rose like the smoke of the forest fire.

वसुधारेणुसंवीतौ वसुधाधरसंनिभौ। बभ्राजतुर्यथा शैलौ नीहारेणाभिसंवृतौ॥

vasudhāreṇusaṃvītau vasudhādharasaṃnibhau| babhrājaturyathā śailau nīhāreṇābhisaṃvṛtau||

Covered with the dust of the earth, they, who were like mountains looked like two cliffs enveloped in mists.

राक्षसेन तदा भीमं क्लिश्यमानं निरीक्ष्य च। उवाचेदं वचः पार्थः प्रहसञ्छनकैरिव॥

rākṣasena tadā bhīmaṃ kliśyamānaṃ nirīkṣya ca| uvācedaṃ vacaḥ pārthaḥ prahasañchanakairiva||

Seeing Bhima oppressed by the Rakshasas, Partha, Arjuna, slowly said with smiles on his lips-

भीम मा भैर्महाबाहो न त्वां बुध्यामहे वयम्। समेतं भीमरूपेण रक्षसा श्रमकर्शितम्॥

bhīma mā bhairmahābāho na tvāṃ budhyāmahe vayam| sametaṃ bhīmarūpeṇa rakṣasā śramakarśitam||

"O Bhima, O mighty armed (hero) fear nothing. we did not know that in the fight with the terrible Rakshasas you are tired.

साहाय्येऽस्मि स्थितः पार्थ पातयिष्यामि राक्षसम्। नकुलः सहदेवश्च मातरं गोपयिष्यतः॥

sāhāyye'smi sthitaḥ pārtha pātayiṣyāmi rākṣasam| nakulaḥ sahadevaśca mātaraṃ gopayiṣyataḥ||

O son of Pritha, I stand here to help you. I shall kill the Rakshasas. Nakula and Sahadeva will protect our mother.

भीम उवाच उदासीनो निरीक्षस्व न कार्यः समभ्रमस्त्वया। न जात्वयं पुनर्जीवेन्मबाह्वन्तरमागतः॥

bhīma uvāca udāsīno nirīkṣasva na kāryaḥ samabhramastvayā| na jātvayaṃ punarjīvenmabāhvantaramāgataḥ||

Bhima said: Look on this combat with unconcern. You need not take part in it. When he has come to my clutches, he will not escape with life.

अर्जुन उवाच किमनेन चिरं भीम जीवता पापरक्षसा। गन्तव्ये न चिरं स्थातुमिह शक्यमरिंदम॥

arjuna uvāca kimanena ciraṃ bhīma jīvatā pāparakṣasā| gantavye na ciraṃ sthātumiha śakyamariṃdama||

Arjuna said : O Bhima, what need is there to keep this wicked Rakshasas alive any longer? O chastiser of foes, we are to go from this place as soon as possible; and therefore we can stay here no longer.

पुरा संरज्यते प्राची पुरा संध्या प्रवर्तते। रौद्रे मुहूर्ते रक्षांसि प्रबलानि भवन्त्युत॥

purā saṃrajyate prācī purā saṃdhyā pravartate| raudre muhūrte rakṣāṃsi prabalāni bhavantyuta||

The east is reddening; the morning twilight is about to set in. At Raudra Muhurata (just at the break of day), the Rakshasas become most powerful.

त्वरस्व भीम मा क्रीड जहि रक्षो विभीषणम्। पुरा विकुरुते मायां भुजयोः सारमर्पय॥

tvarasva bhīma mā krīḍa jahi rakṣo vibhīṣaṇam| purā vikurute māyāṃ bhujayoḥ sāramarpaya||

O Bhima, be quick. Do not play (with him); kill the fierce Rakshasas. He can display Maya delusions, hereafter. Therefore, show the strength of you arms.

वैशम्पायन उवाच अर्जुनेनैवमुक्तस्तु भीमो रोषाज्ज्वलन्निव। बलमाहारयामास यद् वायोर्जगतः क्षये॥

vaiśampāyana uvāca arjunenaivamuktastu bhīmo roṣājjvalanniva| balamāhārayāmāsa yad vāyorjagataḥ kṣaye||

Vaishampayana said : Having been thus addressed by Arjuna, Bhima blazed up in anger. He summoned the strength that Bahu puts forth at the time of the universal dissolution.

ततस्तस्याम्बुदाभस्य भीमो रोषात् तु रक्षसः। उत्क्षिप्याभ्रामयद् देहं तूर्णं शतगुणं तदा॥

tatastasyāmbudābhasya bhīmo roṣāt tu rakṣasaḥ| utkṣipyābhrāmayad dehaṃ tūrṇaṃ śataguṇaṃ tadā||

He quickly raised up the cloud like Rakshasas in anger and he then whirled him one hundred times.

भीम उवाच वृथामांसैर्वृथापुष्टो वृथावृद्धो वृथमतिः। वृथामरणमर्हस्त्वं वृथाद्य न भविष्यसि॥

bhīma uvāca vṛthāmāṃsairvṛthāpuṣṭo vṛthāvṛddho vṛthamatiḥ| vṛthāmaraṇamarhastvaṃ vṛthādya na bhaviṣyasi||

Bhima said: (O Rakshasas), your body has in vain grown and thriven on unsanctified meat. Your intelligence is in vain, your sense is in vain. You deserve, therefore, an unholy death. I shall reduce you today to nothing.

क्षेममद्य करिष्यामि यथा वनमकण्टकम्। न पुनर्मानुषान् हत्वा भक्षयिष्यसि राक्षस॥

kṣemamadya kariṣyāmi yathā vanamakaṇṭakam| na punarmānuṣān hatvā bhakṣayiṣyasi rākṣasa||

I shall make this forest blessed today, O Rakshasas, completely shorn of prickly plant (which you were in it); so that you shall no longer kill men in order to eat them.

अर्जुन उवाच यदि वा मन्यसे भारं त्वमिमं राक्षसं युधि। करोमि तव साहाय्यं शीघ्रमेष निपात्यताम्॥

arjuna uvāca yadi vā manyase bhāraṃ tvamimaṃ rākṣasaṃ yudhi| karomi tava sāhāyyaṃ śīghrameṣa nipātyatām||

Arjuna said : If you think it a heavy task to kill the Rakshasas in battle, let me assist you. Kill him without (any further) loss of time.

अथवाप्यहमेवैनं हनिष्यामि वृकोदर। कृतकर्मा परिश्रान्तः साधु तावदुपारम॥

athavāpyahamevainaṃ haniṣyāmi vṛkodara| kṛtakarmā pariśrāntaḥ sādhu tāvadupārama||

O Vrikodara, let me kill him alone. You are tired and you have almost finished the work and you well deserve rest (now).

वैशम्पायन उवाच तस्य तद् वचनं श्रुत्वा भीमसेनोऽत्यमर्षणः। निष्पिष्यैनं बलाद् भूमौ पशुमारममारयत्॥

vaiśampāyana uvāca tasya tad vacanaṃ śrutvā bhīmaseno'tyamarṣaṇaḥ| niṣpiṣyainaṃ balād bhūmau paśumāramamārayat||

Vaishampayana said : having heard these words (of Arjuna) Bhimasena was inflamed with rage; and dashing him on the ground with all his might, he killed him like beast.

स मार्यमाणो भीमेन ननाद विपुलं स्वनम्। पूरयंस्तद् वनं सर्वं जलाई इव दुन्दुभिः॥

sa māryamāṇo bhīmena nanāda vipulaṃ svanam| pūrayaṃstad vanaṃ sarvaṃ jalāī iva dundubhiḥ||

When he was thus killed by Bhima, he sent forth a terrible roar like the sound of a wet drum which filled the whole forest.

बाहुभ्यां योक्त्रयित्वा तं बलवान् पाण्डुनन्दनः। मध्ये भक्त्वाा महाबाहुर्हर्षयामास पाण्डवान्॥

bāhubhyāṃ yoktrayitvā taṃ balavān pāṇḍunandanaḥ| madhye bhaktvāā mahābāhurharṣayāmāsa pāṇḍavān||

Then the strong son of Pandu (Bhima), holding the body with his hands, broke it in the middle and the mighty armed hero greatly pleased the Pandavas (by his this great deed).

हिडिम्बं निहतं दृष्ट्वा संहृष्टास्ते तरस्विनः। अपूजयन् नरव्याघ्रं भीमसेनमरिंदमम्॥

hiḍimbaṃ nihataṃ dṛṣṭvā saṃhṛṣṭāste tarasvinaḥ| apūjayan naravyāghraṃ bhīmasenamariṃdamam||

Seeing Hidimba slain, they were filled with joy and lost on time to congratulate that best of men, that chastiser of foes, Bhimasena.

अभिपूज्य महात्मानं भीमं भीमपराक्रमम्। पुनरेवार्जुनो वाक्यमुवाचेदं वृकोदरम्॥ न दूरं नगरं मन्ये वनादस्मादहं विभो। शीघ्रं गच्छाम भद्रं ते न नो विद्यात् सुयोधनः॥

abhipūjya mahātmānaṃ bhīmaṃ bhīmaparākramam| punarevārjuno vākyamuvācedaṃ vṛkodaram|| na dūraṃ nagaraṃ manye vanādasmādahaṃ vibho| śīghraṃ gacchāma bhadraṃ te na no vidyāt suyodhanaḥ||

Thus congratulating the illustrious and greatly powerful Bhima, Arjuna thus again addressed Vrikodara, "O lord, I believe there is a town not far off from this forest. O blessed one, let us soon go from this place, so that Duryodhana may not trace us."

ततः सर्वे तथेत्युक्त्वा सह मात्रा महारथाः। प्रययुः पुरुषव्याघ्रा हिडिम्बा चैव राक्षसी॥

tataḥ sarve tathetyuktvā saha mātrā mahārathāḥ| prayayuḥ puruṣavyāghrā hiḍimbā caiva rākṣasī||

Those best of men (the Pandavas), those great car warriors, saying “Be it so," proceeded with their mother. And Rakshasi Hidimba also (followed them.)
