वैशम्पायन उवाच अथ रात्र्यां व्यतीतायामशेषो नागरो जनः। तत्राजगाम त्वरितो दिदृक्षुः पाण्डुनन्दनान्॥

vaiśampāyana uvāca atha rātryāṃ vyatītāyāmaśeṣo nāgaro janaḥ| tatrājagāma tvarito didṛkṣuḥ pāṇḍunandanān||

Vaishampayana said : When the night had passed away a large number of the people of the city came there to see the sons of Pandu.

निर्वापयन्तो ज्वलनं ते जना ददृशुस्ततः। जातुषं तद् गृहं दग्धममात्यं च पुरोचनम्॥

nirvāpayanto jvalanaṃ te janā dadṛśustataḥ| jātuṣaṃ tad gṛhaṃ dagdhamamātyaṃ ca purocanam||

Those men extinguished the fire and saw that the house was made of lac and that the counsellor Purochana had been burnt to death.

नूनं दुर्योधनेनेदं विहितं पापकर्मणा। पाण्डवानां विनाशायेत्येवं ते चुक्रुशुर्जनाः॥

nūnaṃ duryodhanenedaṃ vihitaṃ pāpakarmaṇā| pāṇḍavānāṃ vināśāyetyevaṃ te cukruśurjanāḥ||

The Citizens said : Indeed this sinful act was contrived by the wicked Duryodhana to destroy the sons of Pandu.

विदिते धृतराष्ट्रस्य धार्तराष्ट्रो न संशयः। दग्धवान् पाण्डुदायादान् न ह्येनं प्रतिषिद्धवान्॥

vidite dhṛtarāṣṭrasya dhārtarāṣṭro na saṃśayaḥ| dagdhavān pāṇḍudāyādān na hyenaṃ pratiṣiddhavān||

There is on doubt that the son of Dhritarashtra (Duryodhana ) has burnt to death the heirs of Pandu, with the full knowledge of Dhritarashtra, else he would have been prevented (by his father).

नूनं शांतनवोऽपीह न धर्ममनुवर्तते। द्रोणश्च विदुरश्चैव कृपश्चान्ये च कौरवाः॥

nūnaṃ śāṃtanavo'pīha na dharmamanuvartate| droṇaśca viduraścaiva kṛpaścānye ca kauravāḥ||

Indeed, the son of Shantanu (Bhishma,) Drona. Vidura, Kripa and other Kurus have not followed the dictates of duty.

ते वयं धृतराष्ट्रस्य प्रेषयामो दुरात्मनः। संवृत्तस्ते परः काम: पाण्डवान् दग्धवानसि॥

te vayaṃ dhṛtarāṣṭrasya preṣayāmo durātmanaḥ| saṃvṛttaste paraḥ kāma: pāṇḍavān dagdhavānasi||

"Let us (now) send words to the wicked minded Dhritarashtra, (saying), "Your great desire is fulfilled; you have burnt to death the Pandavas."

ततो व्यपोहमानास्ते पाण्डवार्थे हुताशनम्। निषादी ददृशुर्दग्धां पञ्चपुत्रामनागसम्॥

tato vyapohamānāste pāṇḍavārthe hutāśanam| niṣādī dadṛśurdagdhāṃ pañcaputrāmanāgasam||

Vaishampayana said: They then began to extinguish the fire to find out the Pandavas. They saw the Nishada woman burnt to death with her five sons.

खनकेन तु तेनैव वेश्म शोधयता बिलम्। पांसुभिः पिहितं तच्च पुरुषैस्तैर्न लक्षितम्॥

khanakena tu tenaiva veśma śodhayatā bilam| pāṃsubhiḥ pihitaṃ tacca puruṣaistairna lakṣitam||

The miner, while removing the ashes, covered with it the hole he had dug in such a way that it remained unnoticed by all who had gone there. to

ततस्ते ज्ञापयामासुधृतराष्ट्रस्य नागराः। पाण्डवानग्निना दग्धानमात्यं च पुरोचनम्॥

tataste jñāpayāmāsudhṛtarāṣṭrasya nāgarāḥ| pāṇḍavānagninā dagdhānamātyaṃ ca purocanam||

The citizens then sent words Dhritarashtra to inform that the Pandavas along with counsellor Purochana had been burnt to death.

श्रुत्वा तु धृतराष्ट्रस्तद् राजा सुमहदप्रियम्। विनाशं पाण्डुपुत्राणां विललाप सुदुःखितः॥

śrutvā tu dhṛtarāṣṭrastad rājā sumahadapriyam| vināśaṃ pāṇḍuputrāṇāṃ vilalāpa suduḥkhitaḥ||

Hearing the great evil news of the death of the sons of Pandu, the king Dhritarashtra bewailed in great sorrow.

अद्य पाण्डुम॒तो राजा मम भ्राता महायशाः। तेषु वीरेषु दग्धेषु मात्रा सह विशेषतः॥

adya pāṇḍuma॒to rājā mama bhrātā mahāyaśāḥ| teṣu vīreṣu dagdheṣu mātrā saha viśeṣataḥ||

Dhritarashtra said: King Pandu, my illustrious brother, has (indeed) died to day, when those heroes (the Pandavas) with their mother have been burnt to death.

गच्छन्तु पुरुषाः शीघ्रं नगरं वारणावतम्। सत्कारयन्तु तान् वीरान् कुन्तिराजसुतां च ताम्॥

gacchantu puruṣāḥ śīghraṃ nagaraṃ vāraṇāvatam| satkārayantu tān vīrān kuntirājasutāṃ ca tām||

O man, go quickly to the city of Varanavata and perform the funeral rites of those heroes and of the daughter of the king of Kunti (Bhoja).

कारयन्तु च कुल्यानि शुभानि च बृहन्ति च। ये च तत्र मृतास्तेषां सुहृदो यान्तु तानपि॥

kārayantu ca kulyāni śubhāni ca bṛhanti ca| ye ca tatra mṛtāsteṣāṃ suhṛdo yāntu tānapi||

Let also the bones of the deceased be sanctified by the usual rites and let all the beneficial and great acts be performed. Let the friends and relatives of those that have been burnt to death also go there.

एवं गते मया शक्यं यद् यत् कारयितुं हितम्। पाण्डवानां च कुन्त्याश्च तत् सर्वं क्रियतां धनैः॥ एवमुक्त्वा ततश्चक्रे ज्ञातिभिः परिवारितः। उदकं पाण्डुपुत्राणां धृतराष्ट्रोऽम्बिकासुतः॥

evaṃ gate mayā śakyaṃ yad yat kārayituṃ hitam| pāṇḍavānāṃ ca kuntyāśca tat sarvaṃ kriyatāṃ dhanaiḥ|| evamuktvā tataścakre jñātibhiḥ parivāritaḥ| udakaṃ pāṇḍuputrāṇāṃ dhṛtarāṣṭro'mbikāsutaḥ||

Let also all other beneficial acts that ought to be performed by us for the Pandavas and Kunti be accomplished by spending wealth. Having said this, the son of Ambika, Dhritarashtra, surrounded by his relatives, offered oblations of water to the manes of the sons of Pandu,

रुरुदुः सहिताः सर्वे भृशं शोकपरायणाः। हा युधिष्ठिर कौरव्य हा भीम इति चापरे॥

ruruduḥ sahitāḥ sarve bhṛśaṃ śokaparāyaṇāḥ| hā yudhiṣṭhira kauravya hā bhīma iti cāpare||

Being greatly afflicted with sorrow, he wept with all others! (saying,) Yudhisthira!" "O descendant of Kuru!" others cried, “O Bhima!"

हा फाल्गुनेति चाप्यन्ये हा यमाविति चापरे। कुन्तीमार्ताश्च शोचन्त उदकं चक्रिरे जनाः॥

hā phālguneti cāpyanye hā yamāviti cāpare| kuntīmārtāśca śocanta udakaṃ cakrire janāḥ||

Others again, “O Falguni!" some again, "O the twins!” “O mother Kunti!” They thus bewailed and gave oblations of water.

अन्ये पौरजनाश्चैवमन्वशोचन्त पाण्डवान्। विदुरस्त्वल्पशश्चक्रे शोकं वेद परं हि सः॥

anye paurajanāścaivamanvaśocanta pāṇḍavān| vidurastvalpaśaścakre śokaṃ veda paraṃ hi saḥ||

The other citizens also bewailed for the Pandavas. But Vidura did not bewail much, for he knew the truth.

पाण्डवाश्चापि निर्गत्य नगराद् वारणावतात्। नदीं गङ्गामनुप्राप्ता मातृषष्ठा महाबलाः॥

pāṇḍavāścāpi nirgatya nagarād vāraṇāvatāt| nadīṃ gaṅgāmanuprāptā mātṛṣaṣṭhā mahābalāḥ||

Leaving the city of Varanavata, the greatly strong Pandavas, altogether six in number with their mother, reached the river Ganges.

दाशानां भुजवेगेन नद्याः स्रोतोजवेन च। वायुना चानुकूलेन तूर्णं पारमवाप्नुवन्॥

dāśānāṃ bhujavegena nadyāḥ srotojavena ca| vāyunā cānukūlena tūrṇaṃ pāramavāpnuvan||

Aided by the strength of arms of the boatmen and by the rapidity of the current and favourable wind, they then speedily reached the opposite bank.

ततो नावं परित्यज्य प्रययुर्दक्षिणां दिशम्। विज्ञाय निशि पन्थानं नक्षत्रगणसूचितम्॥

tato nāvaṃ parityajya prayayurdakṣiṇāṃ diśam| vijñāya niśi panthānaṃ nakṣatragaṇasūcitam||

They then left the boat and proceeded towards the south, fin ding their way in the dark by the light of the stars.

यतमाना वनं राजन् गहनं प्रतिपेदिरे। ततः श्रान्ताः पिपासार्ता निद्रान्धाः पाण्डुनन्दनाः॥ पुनरूचुर्महावीर्यं भीमसेनमिदं वचः। इतः कष्टतरं किं नु यद् वयं गहने वने। दिशश्च न विजानीमो गन्तुं चैव न शक्नुमः॥

yatamānā vanaṃ rājan gahanaṃ pratipedire| tataḥ śrāntāḥ pipāsārtā nidrāndhāḥ pāṇḍunandanāḥ|| punarūcurmahāvīryaṃ bhīmasenamidaṃ vacaḥ| itaḥ kaṣṭataraṃ kiṃ nu yad vayaṃ gahane vane| diśaśca na vijānīmo gantuṃ caiva na śaknumaḥ||

O king, afternoon much suffering, they at last reached a dense forest. The sons of Pandu became tired, thirsty and sleepy. Yudhisthira thus spoke to the greatly energetic Bhimasena, “What could be more painful then our being in a dense forest! We do not know the directions; we are incapable of proceeding further.

तं च पापं न जानीमो यदि दग्धः पुरोचनः। कथं तु विप्रमुच्येम भयादस्मादलक्षिताः॥

taṃ ca pāpaṃ na jānīmo yadi dagdhaḥ purocanaḥ| kathaṃ tu vipramucyema bhayādasmādalakṣitāḥ||

We do not know whether the sinful Purochana has or has not been burnt to death. How shall we escape from the dangers unobserved by others!

पुनरस्मानुपादाय तथैव व्रज भारत। त्वं हि नो बलवानेको यथा सततगस्तथा॥

punarasmānupādāya tathaiva vraja bhārata| tvaṃ hi no balavāneko yathā satatagastathā||

"O descendant of Bharata, take us on you again and proceed as before. You alone amongst us are strong and (you are) as swift as wind."

इत्युक्तो धर्मराजेन भीमसेनो महाबलः। आदाय कुन्तीं भ्रातूंश्च जगामाशु महाबलः॥

ityukto dharmarājena bhīmaseno mahābalaḥ| ādāya kuntīṃ bhrātūṃśca jagāmāśu mahābalaḥ||

Having been thus addressed by the king of virtue (Yudhisthira), the greatly strong Bhimasena took his brothers and Kunti (on his body) and walked on.
