धृतराष्ट्र उवाच पाण्डोर्विदुर सर्वाणि प्रेतकार्याणि कारय। राजवद् राजसिंहस्य मात्र्याश्चैव विशेषतः॥
dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca pāṇḍorvidura sarvāṇi pretakāryāṇi kāraya| rājavad rājasiṃhasya mātryāścaiva viśeṣataḥ||
Dhritarashtra said: O Vidura, perform the funeral ceremonies of that lion of kings, Pandu and also of Madri in all proper form.

पशून् वासांसि रत्नानि धनानि विविधानि च। पाण्डोः प्रयच्छ मात्र्याश्च येभ्यो यावच्च वाञ्छितम्।२।। यथा च कुन्ती सत्कारं कुर्यान्मात्र्यास्तथा कुरु। यथा न वायुर्नादित्यः पश्येतां तां सुसंवृताम्॥
paśūn vāsāṃsi ratnāni dhanāni vividhāni ca| pāṇḍoḥ prayaccha mātryāśca yebhyo yāvacca vāñchitam|2|| yathā ca kuntī satkāraṃ kuryānmātryāstathā kuru| yathā na vāyurnādityaḥ paśyetāṃ tāṃ susaṃvṛtām||
For the good of their souls, distribute cattle, cloths, gems and all kinds of wealth and give every one as much as he asks. Make arrangements also for Kunti's performance of the last rites of Madri in such a way as will please her. Let Madri's body be so carefully covered that neither the sun nor the wind may see it.

न शोच्यः पाण्डुरनधः प्रशस्यः स नराधिपः। यस्य पञ्च सुता वीरा जाता: सुरसुतोपमाः॥
na śocyaḥ pāṇḍuranadhaḥ praśasyaḥ sa narādhipaḥ| yasya pañca sutā vīrā jātā: surasutopamāḥ||
Do not lament for the sinless Pandu; he was a worthy king and has left behind him five sons like the celestial children.

वैशम्पायन उवाच विदुरस्तं तथेत्युक्त्वा भीष्मेण सह भारत। पाण्डु संस्कारयामास देशे परमपूजिते॥
vaiśampāyana uvāca vidurastaṃ tathetyuktvā bhīṣmeṇa saha bhārata| pāṇḍu saṃskārayāmāsa deśe paramapūjite||
Vaishampayana said : O descendant of the Bharata race, Vidura said, “Be it so" and he with Bhishma performed the funeral ceremony of Pandu on a sacred spot.

ततस्तु नगरात् तूर्णमाज्यगन्धपुरस्कृताः। निर्हताः पावका दीप्ताः पाण्डो राजन् पुरोहितैः॥
tatastu nagarāt tūrṇamājyagandhapuraskṛtāḥ| nirhatāḥ pāvakā dīptāḥ pāṇḍo rājan purohitaiḥ||
O king, without loss of time the priests went out of the city carrying with them, the last fire for Pandu the fragrant and blazing sacred fire, fed with ghee.

अथैनामार्तवैः पुष्पैर्गन्धैश्च विविधैर्वरैः। शिविकां तामलंकृत्य वाससाऽच्छाद्य सर्वशः॥ तां तथा शोभितां माल्यैर्वासोभिश्च महाधनैः। अमात्या ज्ञातयश्चैनं सुहृदश्चोपतस्थिरे॥ नृसिंहं नरयुक्तेन परमालंकृतेन तम्। अवहन् यानमुख्येन सह माया सुसंयतम्॥
athaināmārtavaiḥ puṣpairgandhaiśca vividhairvaraiḥ| śivikāṃ tāmalaṃkṛtya vāsasā'cchādya sarvaśaḥ|| tāṃ tathā śobhitāṃ mālyairvāsobhiśca mahādhanaiḥ| amātyā jñātayaścainaṃ suhṛdaścopatasthire|| nṛsiṃhaṃ narayuktena paramālaṃkṛtena tam| avahan yānamukhyena saha māyā susaṃyatam||
Friends, relatives and adherents, wrapping it up with cloth, decked the body of the king with the flowers of the season and sprinkled over it various perfumes. They decked the hearse also with garlands and rich hangings. Then placing the bodies of the king and the queen on the excellent heir, decked out so brightly, they caused it to be carried on the shoulders of men.

पाण्डुरेणातपत्रेण चामरव्यजनेन च। सर्ववादित्रनादैश्च समलञ्चक्रिरे ततः॥

With the white umbrella held, over the hearse, with waving yak tails, with sounds of various musical instruments, the whole scene looked bright and grand.

रत्नानि चाप्युपादाय बहूनि शतशो नराः। प्रददुः काङ्खमाणेभ्यः पाण्डोस्तस्यौर्ध्वदेहिके॥

Many hundreds of men began to distribute gems among the crowd at the time of the funeral ceremony of Pandu.

याजकैः शुक्लवासोभिहूयमाना हुताशनाः। अगच्छन्नग्रतस्तस्य दीप्यमानाः स्वलंकृताः॥ ब्राह्मणाः क्षत्रिया वैश्याः शूद्राश्चैव सहस्रशः। रुदन्तः शोकसंतप्ता अनुजग्मुर्नराधिपम्॥
yājakaiḥ śuklavāsobhihūyamānā hutāśanāḥ| agacchannagratastasya dīpyamānāḥ svalaṃkṛtāḥ|| brāhmaṇāḥ kṣatriyā vaiśyāḥ śūdrāścaiva sahasraśaḥ| rudantaḥ śokasaṃtaptā anujagmurnarādhipam||
The priests clad in white, walked in the van of the procession, pouring libations of ghee on the sacred fire, blazing in an ornamental vessel. Thousands of Brahmanas, Kshatriyas Vaishyas and followed the king, weeping in grief.

अयमस्मानपाहाय दुःखे चाधाय शाश्वते। कृत्वा चास्माननातांश्च क्व यास्यति नराधिपः॥
ayamasmānapāhāya duḥkhe cādhāya śāśvate| kṛtvā cāsmānanātāṃśca kva yāsyati narādhipaḥ||
The Citizen said : O king, where do you go, leaving us behind and making us miserable and wretched forever?

क्रोशन्तः पाण्डवाः सर्वे भीष्मो विदुर एव च। रमणीये वनोद्देशे गङ्गातीरे समे शुभे॥ न्यासयामासुरथ तां शिबिकां सत्यवादिनः। सभार्यस्य नृसिंहस्य पाण्डोरक्लिष्टकर्मणः॥
krośantaḥ pāṇḍavāḥ sarve bhīṣmo vidura eva ca| ramaṇīye vanoddeśe gaṅgātīre same śubhe|| nyāsayāmāsuratha tāṃ śibikāṃ satyavādinaḥ| sabhāryasya nṛsiṃhasya pāṇḍorakliṣṭakarmaṇaḥ||
Bhishma, Vidura and the sons of Pandu all wept aloud. They at last came to a charming and holy wood on the banks of the Gangas. There they laid down the hearse on which the truthful, the lion hearted and the pious king and his wife lay.

ततस्तस्य शरीरं तु सर्वगन्धाधिवासितम्। शुचिकालीयकादिग्धं दिव्यचन्दनरूषितम्॥ पर्यषिञ्चञ्जलेनाशु शातकुम्भमयैर्घटैः। चन्दनेन च शुक्लेन सर्वतः समलेपयन्॥ कालागुरुविमिश्रेण तथा तुङ्गरसेन च। अथैनं देशजैः शुक्लैर्वासोभिः समयोजयन्॥
tatastasya śarīraṃ tu sarvagandhādhivāsitam| śucikālīyakādigdhaṃ divyacandanarūṣitam|| paryaṣiñcañjalenāśu śātakumbhamayairghaṭaiḥ| candanena ca śuklena sarvataḥ samalepayan|| kālāguruvimiśreṇa tathā tuṅgarasena ca| athainaṃ deśajaiḥ śuklairvāsobhiḥ samayojayan||
They then besmeared the bodies with all kinds of perfumes; they brought water in may golden vessels and washed his body. They then again smeared at with white sandal. They then dressed it in a white dress made of national fabrics and smeared it with Kalaguru mixed with Tungarasa (sort of perfume).

संछन्नः स तु वासोभिर्जीवन्निव नराधिपः। शुशुभे स नरव्याघ्रो महार्हशयनोचितः॥
saṃchannaḥ sa tu vāsobhirjīvanniva narādhipaḥ| śuśubhe sa naravyāghro mahārhaśayanocitaḥ||
With the new dress on, the king appeared like a living man, as if he was only sleeping on a costly bed.

याजकैरभ्यनुज्ञाते प्रेतकर्मण्यनुष्ठिते। घृतावसिक्तं राजानं सह मान्या स्वलंकृतम्॥ तुङ्गपद्मकमिश्रेण चन्दनेन सुगन्धिना। अन्यैश्च विविधैर्गन्धैर्विधिना समदाहयन्॥
yājakairabhyanujñāte pretakarmaṇyanuṣṭhite| ghṛtāvasiktaṃ rājānaṃ saha mānyā svalaṃkṛtam|| tuṅgapadmakamiśreṇa candanena sugandhinā| anyaiśca vividhairgandhairvidhinā samadāhayan||
When the other funeral ceremonies were over, the Kauravas, with the direction of their priests, set fire to the bodies on the king and that of Madri which had been besmeared with ghee and decked with ornaments; and they burnt them with the fragrant Sandal woods which was besmeared with Tungapadma and other perfumes.

ततस्तयोः शरीरे द्वे दृष्ट्वा मोहवशं गता। हा हा पुत्रेति कौसल्या पपात सहसा भुवि॥
tatastayoḥ śarīre dve dṛṣṭvā mohavaśaṃ gatā| hā hā putreti kausalyā papāta sahasā bhuvi||
Seeing the bodies in flame, Kausalya cried out, “O my son, O my son” and she fell senseless on the ground.

तां प्रेक्ष्य पतितामा" पौरजानपदो जनः। सरोद दुःखसंतप्तो राजभक्त्या कृपान्वितः॥
tāṃ prekṣya patitāmā" paurajānapado janaḥ| saroda duḥkhasaṃtapto rājabhaktyā kṛpānvitaḥ||
Seeing her prostrate on the ground the citizens and the people wept in grief or the affection they for the king.

कुन्त्याश्चैवार्तनादेन सर्वाणि च विचुक्रुशुः। मानुषैः सह भूतानि तिर्यग्योनिगतान्यपि॥
kuntyāścaivārtanādena sarvāṇi ca vicukruśuḥ| mānuṣaiḥ saha bhūtāni tiryagyonigatānyapi||
The beast and birds bewailed with men at the lamentations of Kunti.

तथा भीष्मः शान्तनवो विदुरश्च महामतिः। सर्वशः कौरवाश्चैव प्राणदन् भृशदुःखिताः॥
tathā bhīṣmaḥ śāntanavo viduraśca mahāmatiḥ| sarvaśaḥ kauravāścaiva prāṇadan bhṛśaduḥkhitāḥ||
Then the son of Shantanu, Bhishma, the high-souled Vidura and all the other Kurus became disconsolate in grief and sorrow.

ततो भीष्मोऽथ विदुरोराजा च सह पाण्डवैः। उदकं चक्रिरे तस्य सर्वाश्च कुरुयोषितः॥ चुक्रशुः पाण्डवाः सर्वे भीष्मः शान्तनवस्तथा। विदुरो ज्ञातयश्चैव चक्रुश्चाप्युदकक्रियाः॥
tato bhīṣmo'tha vidurorājā ca saha pāṇḍavaiḥ| udakaṃ cakrire tasya sarvāśca kuruyoṣitaḥ|| cukraśuḥ pāṇḍavāḥ sarve bhīṣmaḥ śāntanavastathā| viduro jñātayaścaiva cakruścāpyudakakriyāḥ||
Then Bhishma, Vidura, the king (Dhritarashtra), with the Pandavas and all the Kuru ladies, performed his (Pandu's) water ceremony. All Pandavas grieved for his father. Bhishma, Vidura and other relatives all are grieved. All of them performed the water ceremony.

कृतोदकांस्तानादाय पाण्डवाञ्छोककर्शितान्। सर्वाः प्रकृतयो राजन् शोचमाना न्यवारयन्॥
kṛtodakāṃstānādāya pāṇḍavāñchokakarśitān| sarvāḥ prakṛtayo rājan śocamānā nyavārayan||
When the water ceremony was over, the people, themselves filled with grief, began to console the bereaved sons of Pandu.

यथैव पाण्डवा भूमौ सुषुपुः सह बान्धवैः। तथैव नागरा राजन् शिश्यिरे ब्राह्मणादयः॥ तद्गतानन्दमस्वस्थमाकुमारमहष्टवत्। बभूव पाण्डवैः सार्धं नगरं द्वादश क्षपाः॥
yathaiva pāṇḍavā bhūmau suṣupuḥ saha bāndhavaiḥ| tathaiva nāgarā rājan śiśyire brāhmaṇādayaḥ|| tadgatānandamasvasthamākumāramahaṣṭavat| babhūva pāṇḍavaiḥ sārdhaṃ nagaraṃ dvādaśa kṣapāḥ||
The Pandavas slept on the ground with their friends and relatives. O king, seeing this the Brahmanas and other citizens also gave their bed. Young and old, all men grieved with the sons of Pandu and passed twelve days in mourning.
